A crop can make details easier to inspect, but enlarging it cannot restore detail the camera never captured. If the animal is distant or partly hidden, a broad identification—or no identification—may be the most accurate result.
Start with the photo, not a guess
Keep the full frame and make a crop
Save an uncropped copy before making a second image focused on the animal. The full frame preserves useful context: nearby objects can help estimate size, while the setting may suggest habitat. Use the crop to inspect shape and markings, but do not treat digital enlargement as new evidence; it cannot recover detail absent from the original image.

Write down what you can actually see
Before naming a species, describe observable features: approximate size relative to an object, body outline, head profile, ears, leg length, tail, posture, and any visible coat pattern. Keep observations separate from guesses—for example, “short tail visible” is an observation, while “probably a fox” is an interpretation.
Distance, angle, posture, and partial obstruction can hide or alter the features needed for identification. A small animal behind the main subject may simply not show enough detail for a reliable species-level answer. Account for light, location, and habitat
Treat color cautiously
Dim light, strong contrast, dappled shade, or infrared illumination can change how an animal appears. The African antelope guide notes that infrared can reduce contrast or wash out markings; an animal may also look red-orange-brown in sunlight and dull or dark brown in low light. Color alone is therefore a weak basis for a match when conditions are poor.
Use geography and setting to narrow the list
Record where the photo was taken as precisely as is safe and appropriate, along with broad habitat—such as woodland, garden, coast, or grassland—and the date or season if known. Compare possible animals with a reliable regional reference that includes range, habitat, and field marks. Geography can rule candidates in or out, but it does not prove an identification on its own; it should agree with the animal’s visible anatomy.

Use recognition apps as a starting point
Seek is an image-recognition app that suggests wildlife and other organisms using observations from iNaturalist and partner sites. Its official page says precise location is not stored in or sent by the app and describes the location as obscured; check the app’s current settings and privacy policy before using it, especially if the image or location is sensitive: Seek by iNaturalist.

Choose the most specific identification the evidence supports
If the image does not show decisive features, stop at a broader group such as bird, mammal, insect, or a family-level identification. Do not force a species name because an app offered one or because a familiar animal seems plausible. iNaturalist’s guidance allows coarse identifications, which can help knowledgeable community members find an observation and refine it when evidence is available: How to make an identification on iNaturalist.
The African antelope guide makes the same practical point for photo records: it is better to leave an animal unidentified than risk recording an inaccurate identification. This is especially relevant when the animal is tiny in the frame, hidden by foliage, or photographed in conditions that obscure field marks.

Ask for help with enough context
If you seek a second opinion, share the crop and, when appropriate, the original frame. Include a privacy-safe location, approximate size, habitat, date or season if known, and a short list of visible features. Explain what is uncertain rather than presenting a guessed species as fact. Community suggestions can help build a candidate list, but the final identification should still be supported by the image and context.
