Laptop Buying Checklist: What to Verify Before Ordering Online

A practical checklist for matching a laptop to your work and verifying its exact configuration, seller and purchase terms before checkout.

Before ordering a laptop, verify two things: that the exact configuration fits the work you need to do, and that the seller’s price, delivery, return and warranty terms are clear. Start with your most demanding tasks and budget; then check the full model or SKU in the cart—not just the product-family name.

Start with your workload and budget

List the applications and tasks you rely on, then check any published system requirements for them. Everyday documents and browsing, coding, photo or video work, gaming, study and frequent travel can call for different priorities. ASUS advises starting with your most demanding tasks and matching the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and AI capabilities to those needs in its laptop buying guide.

Set a budget before comparing optional features. Decide which requirements are must-haves—such as compatibility with a work application, a particular port or a maximum carry weight—and which are preferences. That keeps a higher-resolution display or an attractive extra from displacing something essential.

Use published specifications as guidance, not guarantees

Microsoft’s Windows buying guide, accessed in 2026, gives profile-based examples rather than universal minimums. Its light-use profile discusses 8 GB to 16 GB or more of RAM and 256 GB to 1 TB or more of storage; actual needs vary with applications and how much you keep locally versus in cloud storage. For creators, it suggests 16 GB or more of RAM and says a discrete GPU depends on the programs used. Its gaming profile gives 16 GB to 64 GB of RAM and 512 GB to 2 TB or more of storage, but those ranges do not guarantee performance in every game. Check the relevant software or game requirements.

Microsoft also describes 40+ trillion operations per second (TOPS) for NPUs in Copilot+ PCs. That is a platform-category specification, not a measure of overall laptop speed. Treat it as relevant only if the device’s AI features matter to your intended use.

Verify the exact laptop configuration

A product-family name can cover several configurations. Compare the full model number or SKU in the cart with the manufacturer’s configuration and the retailer’s listing. The FTC recommends keeping model details when comparison shopping in its U.S. online shopping advice.

Check What to confirm
Processor and graphics Exact processor family and tier, and whether graphics are integrated or discrete. Check the requirements of demanding applications or games.
Memory Installed RAM and whether it can be upgraded. Do not assume another configuration in the same product line has the same amount or upgrade options.
Storage Drive type and capacity, and whether it will hold the files and applications you expect to keep locally. An SSD and an HDD can involve different speed, capacity and cost trade-offs.
Display Screen size, resolution and panel type. If color accuracy matters, verify that the listing or manufacturer provides relevant information; do not infer it from resolution alone.
Operating system The installed operating system and edition, and whether your required software supports it.
Fit and daily use Dimensions, weight, keyboard layout, webcam and battery information. Consider how you will carry and use the machine.
Connections and accessories Ports and compatibility with your monitor, dock, charger, network and other peripherals. Check whether any needed accessories are actually included.

Performance, screen features and portability involve trade-offs. More powerful configurations and larger or higher-resolution displays can use more battery, while storage capacity and drive type affect the balance of speed, space and cost. Consider expected battery experience under your own workload rather than treating a headline figure as a promise of runtime.

Compare only the candidates that meet your needs

If multiple laptops fit, decide which criteria matter most and compare those criteria consistently. A creator might give more weight to the applications’ graphics requirements, display needs and file capacity; someone carrying a laptop daily might prioritize weight, size, battery and keyboard; a gamer should match the graphics configuration and display to the games. These are use-case distinctions, not universal rankings.

  • Does the exact configuration meet your applications’ requirements?
  • What is the total cost at checkout, including shipping and fees?
  • Are memory and storage adequate, and can either be upgraded?
  • Does the screen and physical size suit your work and portability needs?
  • Are the ports and accessories compatible with your setup?
  • Are the seller, delivery promise, return terms and warranty acceptable?

Inspect the listing, seller and checkout terms

Read the actual listing and checkout details, especially on a marketplace where the marketplace operator and a third-party seller may have different processes. The FTC’s U.S. marketplace guidance recommends checking who is selling the item and the applicable protections.

  • Confirm the model or SKU, configuration, condition and included items.
  • Identify the seller, find its contact details and understand who handles a problem.
  • Check whether any marketplace protection applies to this seller and product, and note the deadline to seek help.
  • Review recent reviews across sources rather than relying on star ratings alone.
  • Compare the total price, including taxes, shipping and other fees, and read the promised delivery date or timeframe.
  • Read the specific return policy: deadline, whether return shipping is your responsibility, any restocking fee and any special terms for sale items.

In the United States, the FTC says sellers must state whether an item can be returned for a full refund. Its online-shopping advice also describes a 30-day shipment rule when the seller has not promised a shipping time; that is not an estimated delivery guarantee. Rules and consumer rights elsewhere depend on local law and the seller’s terms.

Before paying, save dated copies of the listing, relevant policies, receipt, order confirmation and any written answers from the seller. These records help establish what configuration and terms you agreed to if a dispute arises.

Read the warranty before placing the order

Check who provides the warranty, its duration and coverage, exclusions, any registration or proof-of-purchase requirements, regional eligibility, where service is available and how to make a claim. Save the written warranty and purchase record. The FTC’s U.S. warranty guidance says written warranty information must be available before purchase and advises checking what is and is not covered.

A paid extended service contract is separate from the included warranty. Compare its coverage, duration and exclusions with the existing protection before deciding whether it adds useful coverage. A retailer’s return policy, a marketplace protection process and a manufacturer warranty are different terms; check each one that applies to your order.

Final pre-payment check

  1. Match the cart’s full model or SKU and installed configuration against the manufacturer’s specifications.
  2. Confirm compatibility with your software, peripherals and intended workload.
  3. Review the complete checkout price and stated delivery terms.
  4. Read the seller-specific return and marketplace-protection terms.
  5. Read and save the applicable written warranty.
  6. Save the listing and order records before they change or disappear.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
