Google Gemini Referrals vs. Google Organic Search: How to Tell Them Apart in GA4

In GA4, compare Session source / medium with Session default channel group in Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. Unpaid Google Search commonly appears as google / organic and is grouped under Organic Search. A recognized referral from the Gemini assistant can appear with the ai-assistant medium and the AI Assistant channel. That label records a recognized referral—not every visit influenced by Gemini or Google’s generative search features.

Where to see Gemini referrals and Google organic sessions

  1. In GA4, open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
  2. Choose Session source / medium to inspect source-level values. Google’s documented example for finding unpaid Google Search traffic is google / organic. Recognized Gemini assistant referrals may show the ai-assistant medium; retain the source/medium detail to see the individual source rather than relying only on a channel total. (Google Analytics: Traffic acquisition report; Google Analytics: traffic-source dimensions)
  3. Switch to Session default channel group to compare broader categories. Google groups google / organic under Organic Search; recognized assistant traffic using ai-assistant is grouped as AI Assistant. (Google Analytics: traffic-source dimensions)

What the GA4 labels mean

Source identifies the specific platform, website, app, or other location that referred a visitor. Medium describes the traffic type: for example, organic indicates unpaid search, while referral is a common label for referral traffic. A channel is a broader category derived from source and medium. Google’s current channel definition places traffic in Organic Search when the source matches its search-source list or the medium is exactly organic. It defines AI Assistant for the exact ai-assistant medium and names Gemini among the example sources. Google says that when the referrer matches a recognized AI assistant, Analytics sets the medium to ai-assistant and the campaign to (ai-assistant). (Google Analytics: default channel group)

Google announced the dedicated AI-assistant measurement on May 13, 2026. Its release note says, “Google Analytics now provides a dedicated way to measure and analyze traffic originating from popular AI assistants.” (Google Analytics Help: What’s new in Google Analytics)

What the AI Assistant channel does not include

Google explicitly excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode from the AI Assistant channel. A click from the Gemini assistant app or site is therefore not interchangeable with a Google Search session in which someone may have seen one of those features. A google / organic session identifies the source and medium GA4 recorded; it does not reveal whether the visitor previously saw an AI-generated search feature. (Google Analytics: default channel group)

How to compare the traffic fairly

Use the same date range and session-scoped dimensions for both categories. Session dimensions describe the source attached to sessions; first-user dimensions describe how users were originally acquired, and event-scoped traffic dimensions use the property’s attribution model. Mixing those scopes can produce totals that are not directly comparable. (Google Analytics: traffic-source dimensions; Google Analytics: default channel group)

  • For source-level detail: compare Session source / medium values such as google / organic and entries carrying ai-assistant.
  • For category totals: compare Session default channel group values Organic Search and AI Assistant.
  • For destination pages: add landing page as an analysis dimension to see where the sessions arrived.
  • For engagement or conversions: check that event collection and attribution scope are appropriate before comparing results. These measures describe what GA4 recorded; they do not by themselves establish that Gemini caused an outcome.

When a custom channel group is useful

Google also documents custom channel groups for analysts who need a tailored assistant rule. Its example uses a regular expression over assistant URLs. Put the custom AI channel above Referral and, where needed, Organic Search so its rule is evaluated first. Use the custom group in acquisition reports and review the expression when relevant assistant URLs change. (Google Analytics: custom channel groups)

With Google’s dedicated AI Assistant channel available, a custom rule is not necessary simply to separate recognized Gemini assistant referrals from organic search. It remains an option when the default classification does not meet a particular reporting need.

How to interpret missing or present Gemini traffic

The automatic label depends on the referrer matching a recognized assistant. Google’s documentation does not guarantee that every app, browser, or navigation path preserves a Gemini referrer, and it does not provide a complete client-by-client inventory. A missing ai-assistant value is not proof that a visitor had no prior Gemini exposure. A recognized value supports the narrower statement that the session arrived from a recognized assistant source; it does not establish that the assistant caused a later conversion. Report the classification GA4 observed and avoid treating it as a census of all Gemini-influenced journeys.
