The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy, and many of its measured structural properties are broadly ordinary for nearby spiral galaxies. It is not unusually large: rare “super spiral” galaxies have disks several times wider. The comparison depends on what is being measured, though—especially whether a figure describes stars, the full mass including dark matter, or just the visible disk.
What kind of spiral galaxy is the Milky Way?
The Milky Way has a disk, a central bulge, spiral arms and a surrounding halo. It is classified as a barred spiral because a bar-shaped structure crosses its central region. NASA also identifies Andromeda as a barred spiral; the bar describes structure, not a galaxy’s size or evolutionary standing. How typical is the Milky Way’s structure?
A 2024 comparison in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics examined literature-derived measurements, primarily for edge-on spiral galaxies. It considered disk scale length and height, disk flatness, the thick-to-thin disk mass ratio, bulge-to-total luminosity and spiral-arm pitch angle. The authors concluded that many Milky Way parameters are ordinary for local spirals.

How large and massive is the Milky Way?
NASA describes the Milky Way’s stellar disk as more than 100,000 light-years across. That is a span for the disk of stars, not a measurement of the full extent of its halo. The boundary used for a galaxy’s visible disk also matters when comparing widths. See NASA’s galaxy overview.
A NASA report on a Hubble and Gaia study gives the Milky Way a total mass of about 1.5 trillion solar masses and describes that estimate as fairly normal for a galaxy of its brightness. Total mass includes the dominant dark matter contribution; it is not the mass of the stars alone. The figure is a reported estimate, not an exact or permanent constant. Are there spiral galaxies bigger than the Milky Way?
Yes. The rare galaxies called “super spirals” are an exceptional contrast, not a typical spiral-galaxy benchmark. In a 2016 report, NASA/JPL described examples with eight to fourteen times the Milky Way’s brightness, up to ten times its mass, and disks two to four times as wide. The largest disk cited in that report spans 440,000 light-years. Their star-formation rates reached up to 30 times the Milky Way’s in the reported findings. - Viewing angle changes the appearance. From an edge-on viewpoint, a galaxy’s disk may be clear while its spiral arms are difficult to see. Comparing structure is more informative when the viewing orientation is taken into account.
- Size depends on the boundary. A quoted disk width should use a comparable visible or stellar-disk definition; it should not be confused with a galaxy’s extended halo.
- Mass can mean different things. Stellar mass counts stars, while total mass also includes dark matter. The Milky Way’s cited 1.5-trillion-solar-mass estimate is total mass.
- Samples and methods matter. The 2024 structural study used literature values, primarily for edge-on spirals, while the super-spiral figures describe an exceptional class reported in a separate study. They do not create one universal ranking of “average” galaxies.
For a like-for-like comparison, identify each galaxy’s barred or unbarred structure and viewing orientation, then compare disk measurements using the same boundary convention. Keep stellar and total mass separate, and compare activity such as star formation or black-hole behavior only when the measurement and date are clear.

What can the Milky Way tell us about other galaxies?
We observe the Milky Way from inside it, whereas other spiral galaxies are viewed from outside. That makes direct comparison challenging, but the Milky Way is still a useful baseline: NASA describes its stellar populations as a reference for comparing populations in other galaxies. Its central black hole appears relatively quiet compared with those in other galaxies; NASA notes that astronomers are unsure why. See NASA’s “Is the Milky Way Unique?”.
