Windows or the laptop maker may have set a charge limit; alternatively, the adapter, cable, port, or battery may not be delivering power properly. Start with the low-risk checks below, then use diagnostics and instructions for your exact laptop model—Dell, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS do not share one universal procedure.
1. Check whether a charge limit is intentional
Some Windows laptops deliberately pause charging below 100% to reduce battery wear. Select or hover over the battery icon; if Windows shows “Fully Smart charged” with a heart indicator, Smart charging may be active. To check Windows power settings, open Settings > System > Power & battery. The manufacturer may implement its own charging limit, so consult your model’s instructions if you need a full charge for travel. Microsoft explains the feature in its Smart charging guide.

Dell laptops may also have a BIOS charge configuration, with options such as Adaptive, Standard, ExpressCharge, Primarily AC Use, or custom thresholds, depending on the model. Dell recommends Adaptive in the cited guidance, but available labels and choices vary. A threshold setting can explain why charging stops below 100%; if you temporarily choose a mode that allows full charging to test the issue, restore your preferred battery-health setting afterward. 2. Check the outlet, adapter, cable, and charging port
- Try a wall outlet you know works.
- Firmly connect the adapter to the outlet and the laptop. Confirm you are using the laptop’s actual charging port.
- Look for visible damage or debris on the cable, plug, and port. Do not keep using a damaged charger or cable.
- If available, test with a known-good adapter that meets the laptop’s requirements.
An adapter can supply enough power to run a laptop while providing too little to charge its battery. Check the exact model’s manual or official support page for the required adapter type and wattage. Microsoft advises using the charger and cable designed for the device in its charging guidance.

USB-C connector shape does not prove compatibility
USB-C devices, chargers, and cables must support the required charging standard and power level. Microsoft gives standard USB-C as an example of up to 5 V at 3 A (15 W), while USB Power Delivery can support faster charging and higher power. Those are standard capabilities—not a promise that a particular laptop port, charger, or cable supports the wattage your laptop needs. For instance, Microsoft’s page also illustrates a 36 W requirement (12 V at 3 A) that a 5 V, 3 A charger would not meet. Match the adapter and cable to your exact model’s requirements.
3. Restart Windows and check battery information
After checking the power connection, restart Windows once. To view battery usage and capacity information, open Command Prompt and run:

powercfg /batteryreportWindows reports where it saved the HTML battery report. It can help you review battery history and capacity, but it is informational—not a definitive test that proves a battery is defective. Microsoft describes the report and battery care in its battery-care guidance.

Dell
Dell’s guidance recommends checking whether BIOS recognizes the adapter, reviewing battery charge settings, and running Dell battery diagnostics. An adapter below the laptop’s minimum wattage may run the system without charging the battery. BIOS options and support steps vary by model; use Dell’s official instructions for your device rather than assuming a particular menu or key sequence.

HP, Lenovo, and ASUS
Find the exact model number and use that manufacturer’s official support page to verify adapter specifications, charging limits, BIOS settings, and diagnostics. Menu names, function keys, and utilities differ by model; do not assume Dell instructions apply to HP, Lenovo, or ASUS. Microsoft also directs users to the manufacturer to identify the right charger.
5. Decide whether the problem needs service
If the battery still will not charge after you have verified the adapter is compatible, checked for an active charge limit, and completed the basic connection checks, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. A failed adapter, damaged charging port, or battery fault may require service; software steps cannot repair a physically failed component. Use manufacturer diagnostics where available to help determine the next step.

If the battery is visibly swollen, stop using the laptop immediately. Handle it cautiously and do not press, puncture, or otherwise put pressure on it. Microsoft’s battery-care guidance covers battery safety.

- The adapter wattage the laptop requires.
- Whether the laptop, charger, and cable support the same charging protocol and power level.
- Whether the charger is approved or recommended by the manufacturer.
A replacement battery is not the default fix for this message. Consider one only when model-specific diagnostics or a qualified repair evaluation supports that decision.
