Yes. A desktop PC can run on battery power when connected to a suitably rated UPS or a portable power station with AC output. A UPS is usually meant to bridge a short outage so you can save your work and shut down; a power station can offer a larger or mobile reserve. Neither guarantees a particular runtime: the result depends on your complete system’s power draw and the battery unit’s output and capacity.
Why a desktop needs an external battery
Unlike a laptop, a standard desktop does not have a built-in battery. It must receive power from an external battery-backed AC source. A UPS switches to its internal battery when utility power fails and may also provide surge protection or voltage regulation, depending on the model. A portable power station can provide AC from a larger or mobile battery, but its output and capacity must match the equipment.

Choose the right kind of backup
| Option | Typical role | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| UPS | Automatically bridge an outage, giving you time to save work and shut down. | Output watt capacity, VA rating, connected load, waveform, transfer compatibility and the manufacturer’s runtime data for that load. |
| Portable power station with AC outlets | Provide a larger battery reserve or power when away from a wall outlet. | Continuous AC output, stored Wh, usable energy after inverter losses, complete system load and any model-specific transfer behavior. |
For a UPS, compare the equipment’s load with the unit’s watt output; a VA rating is a separate measure and is not interchangeable with watts. Schneider Electric recommends choosing output watt capacity 20–25% above the load, while Eaton recommends a 20% capacity margin in its desktop UPS guide. Add the devices you intend to keep on battery, such as the desktop, monitor and router, then leave that headroom. See Schneider Electric’s UPS buying guide and Eaton’s desktop UPS guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEstimate the runtime you can expect
Runtime declines as the connected load increases. Schneider Electric describes 5–20 minutes as a typical range for home and office UPS backup, depending on model and load; it characterizes this as short-term power for a graceful shutdown, not extended work. Eaton lists 7 minutes at half load for its SMART1000PSGLCD. That product figure does not predict how long a different desktop setup will run.

- 3-YEAR WARRANTY – INCLUDING THE BATTERY; 75K USD Connected Equipment Guarantee; UL SAFETY CERTIFIED: Product has been tested in a UL certified lab and listed with UL as meeting or exceeding safety standards
For a portable power station, compare its continuous AC output with the system’s draw, then compare its usable energy with the duration you want. The battery’s headline Wh capacity is not all available to the devices because the AC inverter has losses. Use a manufacturer runtime curve or load-specific estimate when available, and treat it as model- and load-dependent.
Anker SOLIX’s UK article, dated 2026-09-09, gives an example using a 1,024 Wh C1000 Gen 2 with 2,000 W output: an estimated 7.8 hours for a 118 W setup consisting of a laptop, monitor, router and lamp. That is the vendor’s estimate for a laptop desk, not a desktop-PC test or a promise of desktop runtime. See Anker SOLIX’s example and calculation.

Check the real load and compatibility
Measure the whole setup
If possible, measure the desktop while running the workload you actually care about, and include every device you plan to back up. The wattage printed on a computer power supply describes its rated capability, not necessarily the PC’s observed draw. Eaton advises totaling the maximum wattage ratings of connected equipment to avoid overloading a UPS during an outage. A UPS must also have enough watt output, with the recommended margin, for that load.

Check waveform and transfer behavior
Some computer power supplies use active power-factor correction (PFC). Schneider Electric warns that, in the compatibility case it describes, a power supply can draw a momentary inrush when a UPS changes from utility power to battery. On certain models this may cause an overload or dropped load; it does not establish that every modern UPS has the issue. Check the UPS manufacturer’s guidance for the specific PC and UPS, including waveform and transfer behavior. Schneider’s UK FAQ documents the specific concern: PFC power supplies and step-approximated sine-wave UPS models.

Use product figures as examples, not guarantees
Eaton’s SMART1000PSGLCD is a line-interactive, 1000 VA UPS with pure sine-wave output, positioned for gaming PCs and active-PFC power supplies. Eaton specifies 7 minutes at half load. Whether it suits an individual computer depends on the computer’s actual draw and the applicable outlet and voltage region. Consult the manufacturer’s product specifications and verify that the version available in your region matches your setup.

Choose based on what you need the battery to do
- For a safe shutdown during brief outages: Start with a UPS. Check its watt output and load-specific runtime data, and make sure its waveform and transfer behavior suit the PC.
- For longer or mobile power: Consider a portable power station only after confirming that its continuous AC output supports the full setup and its usable energy can provide the duration you need.
- For either option: Size for the complete set of connected devices rather than the desktop alone, and do not infer your runtime from a different system’s example.
