A fast load does not guarantee a responsive page. To catch stalls that happen later, measure real-user interaction responsiveness, collect main-thread and rendering diagnostics, and record when the page becomes hidden, freezes, resumes, or reloads after discard. No single browser signal explains every hitch, so use them together and check support in the browsers you need to cover.
Why a page can feel janky after it loads
Load metrics describe the start of a visit; they do not show whether later taps, clicks, keyboard input, scrolling, or animation feel responsive. The web.dev guide to Interaction to Next Paint (INP), last updated September 2, 2025, reports: 90% — Chrome usage data, year not specified in the web.dev article. INP evaluates interaction responsiveness during the page visit, rather than only at initial load.

Use three complementary questions to investigate a stall: did the user wait for visible feedback, was the main thread occupied, and what script activity coincided with a delayed rendering frame? Then add lifecycle signals to see whether the tab was hidden, frozen, resumed, or discarded.

Use INP for next-paint responsiveness
INP assesses click, tap, and keyboard interactions across a page visit. It measures the time until the next paint—the first opportunity for the browser to show visible feedback—not the completion of every network request, animation, or asynchronous UI effect. A slow INP points to a responsiveness problem, but does not by itself identify its cause. See web.dev’s INP guide.

Collect event timing with PerformanceObserver
The Performance API exposes timeline entries that can include event, long-task, visibility-state, navigation, resource, and custom timing data. A PerformanceObserver lets your code consume entries as they are recorded. It provides measurements, not the interpretation, dashboards, retention, alerts, or privacy decisions; those remain application or monitoring-system responsibilities. MDN documents the PerformanceObserver interface and the broader set of performance data.
Entry types vary by browser. Check PerformanceObserver.supportedEntryTypes where available, and guard both observer construction and observation so a missing entry type does not break application code. Treat collected events as evidence to aggregate and analyze, not as a ready-made explanation of user experience.
Pair responsiveness with main-thread and rendering diagnostics
Long Tasks: find occupied main-thread intervals
A long task is UI-thread work lasting at least 50 ms. While it runs, input handling and rendering work can be delayed, contributing to janky scrolling or animation as well as slow feedback. Long-task entries help identify blocked intervals, but do not establish that every user-visible hitch had that cause.

MDN marks PerformanceLongTaskTiming as limited availability and not Baseline. Do not assume the API works across your browser mix; feature-detect it and treat absent data as unavailable, not as proof that no long tasks occurred.
Long Animation Frames: inspect delayed rendering and script contributors
Long Animation Frames (LoAF) report rendering-frame updates delayed beyond 50 ms and can include script attribution that helps narrow down contributors. This complements a count of long tasks: a delayed frame describes a rendering delay, and its attribution can reveal relevant script activity. Attribution is diagnostic evidence, not proof of a single root cause; LoAF records are not a frame-rate history or a complete account of every visible hitch.
MDN describes the Long Animation Frame Timing API and its observation and attribution data. Compatibility still needs to be checked for your target browsers. web.dev notes that Long Animation Frames can offer broader frame diagnosis than relying on Long Tasks alone in its custom metrics guidance; compatibility details can change, so validate the current support you need.

Read the signals together
- INP and event timing: whether interactions received visible feedback promptly.
- Long Tasks: whether a supported browser recorded lengthy main-thread work.
- Long Animation Frames: whether rendering updates were delayed and which script contributors were recorded.
A missing API entry is not a clean bill of health: the browser may not support that entry type, the event may not have occurred, or the observation setup may not have captured it. Keep support coverage alongside the measurement when interpreting results.
Record visibility and page lifecycle transitions
Interaction and rendering measurements do not tell you whether a tab was backgrounded or subjected to lifecycle intervention. Record visibility changes separately from supported lifecycle events. When the page becomes hidden, save important application state and attempt to send buffered telemetry; do not rely on unload as a guaranteed final hook.
Chrome’s Page Lifecycle documentation describes freeze and resume events and the desktop Chrome document.wasDiscarded property. Listen for the lifecycle events where supported, and check document.wasDiscarded after a page reload to detect a prior discard in the documented Chrome case. Lifecycle behavior varies among browsers and operating systems, so these Chrome examples should not be generalized without checking support.

Chrome for Developers summarizes the goal: “The Page Lifecycle API provides the predictability developers need to build apps resilient to system interventions.” It also cautions that “using the unload event is never recommended because it’s unreliable and can hurt performance in some cases.” See the Chrome Page Lifecycle API guide.
Test freezing and discard recovery in Chrome
Chrome provides a hands-on way to exercise tab lifecycle behavior at chrome://discards. Test with an open tab and observe both the application and its telemetry:
- Open the page you want to test, then open
chrome://discardsin Chrome. - Use the page’s controls to freeze the tab. Verify that the application does not depend on background work continuing, and check whether your supported lifecycle instrumentation records the transition.
- Resume the tab. Confirm that the interface responds and important state remains usable.
- Use the discard control on the test tab, then return to it so Chrome reloads the page. In the documented desktop Chrome case, check
document.wasDiscardedafter reload and confirm that the application restores the state it is designed to preserve.
This test checks concrete recovery behavior; it does not substitute for observing real users across browsers and devices.

Choose monitoring coverage by the questions you need to answer
Browser APIs provide raw signals, while a hosted real-user-monitoring (RUM) or frontend-observability service may package collection and analysis differently. The relevant comparison is not just whether a dashboard shows INP: check whether its coverage answers your diagnostic and operational needs.
- Interaction coverage: Does it collect INP and the event data needed to investigate slow feedback?
- Rendering diagnostics: Does it support Long Tasks and Long Animation Frames, and how does it handle browsers that lack them?
- Attribution: What script and iframe detail is available, and what remains opaque?
- Coverage: Which browsers and devices are represented in the data?
- Data handling: How do sampling, retention, and privacy controls work?
- Operational fit: What is the collection overhead, and can findings be correlated with errors or application releases?
These are evaluation criteria, not claims about any particular product. Verify current capabilities and policies directly before selecting a service.
