Choose Langfuse when you need to observe model activity and connect production traces to prompts, datasets, experiments, and evaluations. Choose Promptfoo when you need repeatable prompt and model tests, adversarial red teaming, or CI quality gates. They can also work together: Promptfoo documents using Langfuse-managed prompts and retrieving Langfuse traces during evaluations.
This is a workflow comparison based on each product’s documentation, not a hands-on test or feature-parity audit. Your best fit depends on where you need coverage in the LLM lifecycle, how you deploy, and the controls your team requires.

What each tool is designed to do
Langfuse: connect traces to iteration
Langfuse describes itself as an open, self-hostable, extensible platform. Its documentation spans online traces, sessions, agents, prompts, monitoring, datasets, experiments, and evaluations, with evaluation tooling described for development and production contexts. It presents hierarchical traces for model calls, tool invocations, and retrieval steps, and connects prompt versions with observed metrics. Langfuse characterizes the product as connecting “tracing, monitoring, datasets, experiments, and evaluation in one continuous loop” (Langfuse product documentation). This is the vendor’s positioning, not independent validation of effectiveness.
Promptfoo: test behavior and security systematically
Promptfoo describes its project as a local-first open-source evaluation tool. Its documentation covers testing across providers, output assertions, accuracy, safety and performance metrics, adversarial testing, and use through a CLI, library, or CI pipeline. Red-team workflows can generate adversarial probes for vulnerability categories and test through HTTP APIs, browser routes, or direct model access (Promptfoo red-team quickstart). Actual coverage depends on configuration, provider calls, and the threat model you define.

How to choose by workflow
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect production model calls, tool use, and retrieval activity | Langfuse | Its documented lifecycle centers on traces and production signals, connected with prompts and evaluation. |
| Compare prompt or model behavior against test cases before release | Promptfoo | It documents systematic evaluations with assertions and metrics across providers. |
| Probe for vulnerabilities before deployment | Promptfoo | Its red-team workflow generates adversarial probes and supports pipeline execution. |
| Use observed production traces as evaluation inputs while managing prompts centrally | Both | Promptfoo documents an integration for referencing Langfuse prompts and retrieving Langfuse traces. |
This table reflects documented workflow emphasis, not a claim that one tool cannot perform work outside its primary focus. Validate the exact capabilities, integrations, and plan entitlements you need against current product documentation.
Can Langfuse and Promptfoo work together?
Yes. Promptfoo documents two relevant connections: referencing Langfuse-managed prompts with the langfuse:// syntax and retrieving application traces from Langfuse during evaluations (Promptfoo Langfuse integration). This can support a workflow in which a team evaluates prompts against controlled cases and also examines real application behavior.
For trace retrieval, Promptfoo says it queries Langfuse’s v2 Observations API using the OpenTelemetry trace ID propagated in traceparent. The documented normalized observation types include generation, embedding, tool, agent, workflow, and retrieval, with parent-child relationships, inputs, outputs, models, token usage, and costs (Promptfoo Langfuse tracing).

Real-time availability has a version and configuration condition: Promptfoo documents support for specified newer Langfuse SDK versions or an OpenTelemetry exporter using the x-langfuse-ingestion-version: 4 header. With older ingestion paths, trace visibility may be delayed by up to ten minutes. Check the live integration guide for the SDK versions and configuration details that apply to your setup.

How Promptfoo fits into CI
Promptfoo’s CI guide describes running evaluations and red-team tests in a pipeline, tagging results with pipeline context, exporting reports as JSON, HTML, or JUnit XML, and using evaluation outcomes to fail a build (Promptfoo CI/CD guide). That makes it a documented option for turning prompt checks into a pre-deployment quality gate.
- Define evaluation cases and assertions. Specify the prompts, providers, expected outputs or other checks, and relevant safety criteria for your application.
- Add the evaluation and, where appropriate, red-team run to your pipeline. Configure them for the same code or prompt changes your team intends to gate.
- Tag results with pipeline context and export a report. Use the documented JSON, HTML, or JUnit XML formats to make results available to your team or CI system.
- Set the build outcome from evaluation results. Decide which errors should block release; a quality gate is only as useful as its test cases and thresholds.
Pipeline support does not establish that a test suite covers every production risk. Treat generated probes and evaluation outcomes as configured checks, not guarantees of safety or correctness.

Langfuse advertises self-hosting. Promptfoo describes its Community version as usable locally or self-hosted, and separately lists managed cloud and on-premise enterprise offerings. Those statements do not settle how data flows in your particular configuration or what controls are included in a given plan. Review current deployment terms, provider connections, retention behavior, access controls, and any applicable compliance requirements before sending sensitive prompts or traces.
For team governance, Promptfoo’s pricing page lists collaboration, continuous monitoring, centralized security and compliance features, SSO, managed cloud deployment, and support options under Enterprise. Its On-Premise offering is described as providing infrastructure control and data isolation. These are vendor plan descriptions, and availability and entitlements should be confirmed directly (Promptfoo pricing).

What the published pricing information establishes
Promptfoo’s official pricing page lists Community as “Free Forever” and open source, with evaluation features, model providers and integrations, local or self-hosted operation, and red teaming up to 10,000 probes per month. The 10,000 figure is a vendor-published monthly plan limit, not a benchmark of test quality or performance. The page lists Enterprise and On-Premise as custom-priced.
A comparable current Langfuse price or plan limit is not established here, so a numeric price comparison would be misleading. Compare the products using your expected usage and required entitlements, and verify the live terms rather than treating a listed Community allowance as a complete cost estimate.
A practical proof of concept
Before adopting either tool, run a small evaluation using representative material from your own application. This avoids choosing on feature lists alone and exposes integration or governance requirements early.
- Choose a focused set of prompts and cases that reflect common and high-risk user requests.
- Include the models and providers you actually plan to use, along with expected outputs or evaluation criteria.
- For observability needs, include representative traces with relevant model calls, tool invocations, or retrieval steps.
- For security testing, define the threat categories and application routes that matter to your team.
- Check the deployment model and data flows against your environment and policies.
- If using both tools, verify prompt referencing, trace IDs, ingestion configuration, and trace visibility with your installed SDK and exporter versions.
- Estimate cost and operational effort at your expected usage level, including any paid features or support your team needs.
Use the results to decide whether you need Langfuse, Promptfoo, both in a connected workflow, or a different fit for requirements that the documented features do not address.
