Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a call ends at almost exactly eight hours, it may be hitting a limit set by the carrier or calling service. T-Mobile’s support guidance describes calls dropping after eight hours as normal for its service, and Google says Meet dial-in calls can last up to eight hours. Those examples do not establish a universal eight-hour limit: the applicable limit depends on the service and carrier.
Is there a maximum length for a phone call?
There can be, but there is no single eight-hour rule for every phone, carrier, or kind of call. T-Mobile’s support guidance says calls dropping after eight hours is normal for its service. Google Meet’s Help guidance sets a maximum of up to eight hours for dial-in calls and notes that carrier restrictions may make the limit shorter. HONOR’s support guidance gives one or two hours as examples of maximum durations a carrier may set; those examples are not limits that apply to all carriers.

The relevant provider is the one carrying or hosting the call: your mobile carrier for a cellular call, or the calling-service provider for an app call or dial-in bridge. The limit may depend on the account, plan, network, or service feature.
How can you tell a duration limit from a dropped call?
| Clue | Possible provider or service limit | Possible coverage, device, or network problem |
|---|---|---|
| When it ends | Calls end at nearly the same elapsed time repeatedly. | Timing varies, or calls also drop well before a long duration. |
| First check | Ask the carrier or calling-service provider whether a maximum duration applies. | Check coverage and the provider’s guidance for your phone, software, and SIM. |
| What the clue proves | Consistent timing makes a limit worth checking, but does not prove it is the cause. | Irregular drops can fit technical causes, but do not prove the phone is at fault. |
ITU-T’s June 2019 Recommendation G.1028 lists possible technical causes of dropped calls on 4G voice networks, including poor coverage, terminal bugs, handover or SRVCC failures, radio-link drops, and network-link or signaling problems. These are alternative explanations, not evidence of a current policy for any particular carrier.

What should you check first?
- Record the elapsed time. Note when the call started and when it ended. Compare more than one call to see whether the cutoff repeats at nearly the same duration.
- Identify how the call is connected. Establish whether it is ordinary cellular voice, Wi-Fi calling, a calling app, or a meeting-service dial-in number. The relevant duration policy may belong to a different provider depending on the call path.
- Ask the provider about the specific call type. If the timing is repeatable, contact the carrier or calling-service provider and ask whether a call-duration limit applies to your account, plan, network, or feature. Their answer is the way to confirm the current limit for your line.
- Use the service’s reconnect guidance when applicable. For a Google Meet dial-in call that reaches its eight-hour maximum, Google’s guidance is to dial back into the meeting.
- Investigate technical causes if the timing varies. Check whether shorter calls also disconnect, then follow the carrier’s or phone manufacturer’s guidance for local coverage, phone software or calling-app issues, and SIM faults where relevant.
Does VoLTE cause an eight-hour cutoff?
There is no evidence here that VoLTE itself causes an eight-hour cutoff. VoLTE means voice over LTE; Verizon’s support material describes it as voice calling over its 4G LTE network. That explains the transport technology, not a universal call-duration policy. A repeatable cutoff should be checked with the provider rather than attributed to VoLTE without confirmation.

A phone, SIM, headset, battery accessory, or repair tool is not established as a way to override a carrier- or service-enforced duration limit. If calls drop irregularly, device or network troubleshooting may help identify a technical problem, but changing hardware should not be treated as a solution to a provider’s time limit.
