You may not need an iPad alongside a laptop. It earns its place when you regularly want a touch-first screen for handwriting, drawing, reading or marking up documents—or, if your laptop is a compatible Mac, when you’ll use it as a companion display and part of Apple’s cross-device workflows. If your laptop already handles your work and you rarely reach for a tablet-style interaction, the extra device may add cost without solving a real problem.
What can an iPad do that a laptop may not suit as well?
The clearest reason to add an iPad is not that it does every computer task better. It offers a different way to interact: touch, on-screen handwriting and Pencil input. That can be a better fit for particular activities, while a laptop remains the device you use for sustained keyboard-and-pointer work and the desktop apps your tasks require.

Write, draw and mark up documents
Apple documents Apple Pencil workflows for drawing and marking up PDFs, screenshots and images. The iPadOS 26 Preview app also supports viewing and editing PDFs and images, including Pencil markup and AutoFill for PDF forms. These tools make an iPad a plausible choice if you often annotate documents or sketch directly on screen; they do not mean every user needs a Pencil or that every app supports the same capabilities.

Apple describes Sidecar Pencil input for drawing in Mac apps and marking up documents. Pressure and tilt are available only in apps with advanced stylus support, so check the specific apps you rely on rather than assuming every drawing workflow will behave alike. Apple’s guide to working with multiple devices explains Sidecar and its Pencil-related uses.

Read and use a touch-first screen
A tablet may suit reading, browsing or other tasks where you prefer to hold and touch the screen rather than sit at a keyboard. Whether that is valuable depends on your routine: consider where and how you would actually use it, not just whether it is portable in theory.
Can an iPad replace a second monitor?
If your laptop is a compatible Mac, Sidecar can extend or mirror the Mac desktop on an iPad. Extending gives you another display area; mirroring shows the same content on both screens. This may be useful when you want a companion screen and already have a reason to carry an iPad.

Sidecar is an Apple-device feature, not a general iPad-to-laptop display solution. Do not assume it works with a Windows laptop. Apple’s Sidecar guide describes the feature, while its Continuity requirements page lists compatibility conditions. Check the current requirements for your exact Mac and iPad models before buying for this purpose.
Is an iPad useful with a MacBook?
It can be, if you will use Apple’s cross-device features. Apple’s Continuity guide includes Sidecar, Universal Control, AirDrop, Universal Clipboard, Handoff, Continuity Sketch and Continuity Camera. These let compatible Apple devices share certain tasks or content in different ways; they are not all the same feature, and none should be treated as a guaranteed benefit without checking device and software requirements.

Some Continuity features require Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Apple specifies minimum requirements for the devices and operating systems involved. Review the current Continuity features and requirements before counting them as a reason to purchase. Apple’s broader Continuity guide describes ways to work across Apple devices.
If your laptop is a Windows PC, the Mac-specific Sidecar and Continuity examples above do not apply. An iPad may still be worthwhile for standalone touch, Pencil, reading or tablet workflows, but the material here does not establish Windows-specific companion-display or file-transfer options. Check the exact workflow you need before making compatibility part of the decision.

Does iPadOS still limit work with windows and files?
Do not base a purchase decision on an outdated assumption that an iPad cannot manage windows or work with files. Apple’s June 9, 2025 announcement for iPadOS 26 describes a windowing system, additional file-management features and Preview for PDFs and images. It also describes audio and video workflow changes. This is Apple’s account of its own release, not an independent performance test.
Those additions do not guarantee that an iPad will suit every laptop workflow. Check whether your required apps, file-handling tasks and work habits fit iPadOS before treating the tablet as a substitute for a computer. Apple’s iPadOS 26 announcement gives the release details. In that announcement, Apple senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi called it “our biggest iPadOS release ever” and said it would “transform what users can do on iPad.” That is Apple’s characterization of its software, not an independent assessment.

When is buying both devices worth it?
Think in terms of a specific recurring task, not a general promise of greater productivity. The case for owning both is stronger when the iPad would regularly do something your laptop is less suited to—such as handwritten notes, direct markup, sketching, reading in a tablet format or serving as a compatible Mac’s extra display. It is weaker if you cannot name a task you would move to the tablet or if your important apps and work already fit your laptop.
- Consider an iPad if you can name a recurring touch- or Pencil-oriented task and the iPad supports the apps and files it needs.
- Consider it as a Mac companion only after checking Sidecar or other Continuity requirements for your exact devices.
- Pause before buying if the appeal is only a vague expectation of being more productive. No sourced comparative statistic establishes a productivity gain from owning both devices.
What will the iPad setup cost beyond the tablet?
Count the full setup you would actually use: the iPad, any compatible Apple Pencil, and—if you want to type on the tablet—a keyboard. A cover or stand may also matter if you need protection or a particular viewing position. Each accessory adds cost, and compatibility can vary by iPad and Pencil model. Check Apple’s current compatibility information and local prices before choosing; no current price comparison or universal best model is established here.
A keyboard can make typing on the tablet more convenient, but it does not by itself make an iPad a laptop replacement. App and operating-system fit remain separate questions. Avoid paying for accessories to support a workflow you are unlikely to use.

Quick Recap
How to decide before you buy
- Name the task. Identify what you would do on an iPad that you do not want to do on your laptop—such as handwriting, drawing, PDF markup, reading or using a companion display.
- Check the software fit. Confirm that the apps and file workflows for that task work on the iPadOS version and iPad model you are considering.
- Verify compatibility. If you want Sidecar or other Apple Continuity features, check Apple’s current requirements for your Mac, iPad and operating systems. Do not assume Mac features apply to Windows.
- Price the complete setup. Include only accessories you need, and verify that each is compatible with the iPad model.
- Decide based on routine, not possibility. If the tablet has a clear, repeated role in your day, it may complement the laptop. If not, keeping the laptop you already use is a reasonable choice.
