Ladybird Browser Gains Cloudflare Turnstile Support, but It’s Not a Chrome Replacement Yet

Ladybird reported passing Cloudflare Turnstile in testing after compatibility fixes and a Cloudflare-side change. Here’s what that progress does—and doesn’t—mean for browser users.

Ladybird has made a meaningful step toward working on the modern web: in May 2026, the independent browser project said it could clear Cloudflare Turnstile in its testing and load the protected page. That result followed months of compatibility fixes and a change on Cloudflare’s side, so it does not guarantee that Ladybird will pass every challenge or work on every protected site.

What changed between Ladybird and Cloudflare?

Cloudflare’s Turnstile is a browser-based bot-detection challenge that websites can use to help distinguish people from automated traffic. Ladybird previously struggled with it because of many small web-compatibility gaps. The project worked on those gaps, and Cloudflare also made a change that contributed to the result.

In its May 31, 2026 update, Ladybird said: “We can’t say exactly which combination of the two did it, but in our testing Ladybird now clears the challenge and loads the page.” The project did not determine how much of the improvement came from its own fixes versus Cloudflare’s change.

This is practical progress: a failed challenge can block access to a site even when the browser can display much of its content. But it is not a certification or a promise of universal compatibility. Cloudflare’s documentation, updated August 18, 2026, warns that custom or heavily modified browser engines may have limited challenge support. It also says automated browsers are unsupported for production challenges. Cloudflare’s supported-browser guidance remains the relevant caveat for sites using Turnstile.

pcWRT PW-AX1800 WiFi 6 Dual-Band Router with VLAN Support, OpenVPN/WireGuard/IPsec VPN Client/Server - Compatible with ExpressVPN/SurfShark etc., Parental Controls, Ad Blocking, Gigabit Ethernet
  • VLAN Network Segregation: This router includes five preconfigured VLANs that isolate IoT devices, guest users, and work systems into separate, secure networks. Each LAN port and every WiFi SSID can be assigned to a VLAN, giving you complete control over how traffic flows inside your home.
  • Dual VPN Client and Server Support: The router works as both a VPN client and a VPN server, supporting OpenVPN, IPsec, and WireGuard. You can route selected VLANs through a VPN while keeping others on your regular ISP connection, giving each device group the exact level of privacy it needs.
  • Full WiFi 6 on Both Bands: With dual-band WiFi 6 support, the router delivers modern wireless performance across 2.4GHz b/g/n/ax and 5GHz a/n/ac/ax. It improves capacity, stability, and speed while remaining compatible with older devices, making it ideal for busy homes with many connections. Wi-Fi Mesh is available after firmware update.
  • High-Performance Hardware Architecture: Powered by the IPQ6000 quad-core ARM processor at 1.2GHz, along with 128MB flash, 256MB RAM, and hardware NAT acceleration, the router handles multitasking, streaming, VPN traffic, and VLAN isolation smoothly without slowing your network.
  • Flexible and Powerful Parental Controls: You can use trusted services like OpenDNS, CleanBrowsing, and Cloudflare for filtering, then add custom block lists, allow lists, and schedules. The router includes defenses against common bypass attempts, letting families create rules that match each user. Best of all, it's subscription free!

What is Ladybird?

Ladybird is an independent, open-source web browser and browser engine being built from scratch. It is not a new interface wrapped around Chromium, WebKit, or Firefox’s Gecko engine. When announcing the Ladybird Browser Initiative on July 1, 2024, founder Andreas Kling described it as “a brand new engine based on web standards, without borrowing any code from other browsers.” The initiative’s announcement explains the project’s independence and goals. The project targets Linux, macOS, and other Unix-like systems. Building an engine independently gives Ladybird control over its architecture, but it also means the team must implement and maintain the browser technologies that established engines have developed over many years.

How much has Ladybird progressed?

Ladybird’s own Web Platform Tests (WPT) totals show continued implementation work, but they are snapshots reported by the project rather than an independent ranking of browser quality.

Project-reported snapshot WPT subtests passing What it indicates
February 2025 1,773,799 Ladybird reported this total while describing Resource Timing work as part of its effort to support Turnstile.
September 2025 1,853,367 Ladybird reported this total and 13,405 new passes that month in its newsletter.

In its May 2026 update, Ladybird also reported 464 pull requests merged and described work on asynchronous out-of-process scrolling, enabling Media Source Extensions by default, disk caching for JavaScript bytecode, and a WebAssembly just-in-time compiler. These are signs of active engineering, not a like-for-like performance or compatibility comparison with Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. Ladybird project updates

Why did Cloudflare sponsor Ladybird?

Cloudflare announced its sponsorship on September 22, 2025. Ladybird’s September newsletter recorded the contribution as $100,000. The support matters because independent browser development requires sustained engineering, and the Turnstile work illustrates a concrete compatibility issue relevant to Cloudflare’s web platform. The available announcements establish the sponsorship and the project’s reported contribution; they do not establish broader terms or an exclusive partnership. Is Ladybird a practical alternative to Chrome, Firefox, or Safari?

It is an emerging alternative, not yet a proven drop-in replacement for most people. Clearing Turnstile in Ladybird’s test is useful, but a browser’s day-to-day reliability also depends on broad site compatibility, JavaScript and media support, stability, platform availability, privacy behavior, extensions, and performance. The cited project updates describe implementation progress but do not provide independent, apples-to-apples comparisons across those areas.

For now, Ladybird is most compelling to people interested in independent browser-engine development who are willing to encounter incomplete compatibility. If a site is essential, keep an established browser available as a fallback until Ladybird’s behavior on that specific site is confirmed.
