It did not taste the cola, identify its secret ingredients, or reveal why one brand tastes different: it measured a characteristic response from the diluted sample as a whole.
Can a lab-on-a-chip tell different colas apart?
In a 2013 report, Chemistry World described Finnish researchers associated with Pekka Hänninen at the University of Turku using a microfluidic device to distinguish two major rival cola brands. The report also says the approach differentiated examples of vodka, red wines and mineral waters.

The headline’s “cola challenge” and the report’s “taste test” refer to comparing drinks, not to sensory tasting. The device analyzed a chemical signal; no person tasted the samples as part of the chip’s measurement.
How the fluorescence fingerprint worked
The device did not search for a list of known ingredients. Instead, it measured how the sample as a whole affected a luminescent label. The chip’s array contained surface modulators—including detergents, polymers, metal salts and proteins—that interacted to different degrees with components in the liquid. Those interactions changed the long-lived luminescence of a nonspecific europium label. The pattern of fluorescence across the array served as the sample’s fingerprint.

Because the combined response was the distinguishing signal, the method could differentiate samples without first identifying particular ions or molecules. A different fingerprint does not, by itself, explain which ingredient caused the difference, identify a proprietary formula, or measure flavor as a person experiences it.
What happened to a sample
- Dilute and label: The reported protocol diluted a drink sample and added the europium label in solution.
- Dispense into the chip: Microfluidics delivered the prepared sample into an array of wells containing the surface modulators.
- Incubate: The wells were left for a few minutes so interactions could change the luminescence response.
- Read the pattern: A low-cost fluorescence plate reader measured the resulting signal across the array.
The reported account does not provide a named accuracy rate or other performance figure for the cola demonstration. Its result should therefore be understood as sample differentiation under the study’s test conditions, not as a quantified guarantee for every brand, batch or production setting.

What the result can—and cannot—establish
- It can: Show that tested liquid samples produced distinguishable response patterns in the reported setup.
- It cannot, on the evidence reported: Name the specific ingredients responsible for a pattern, reconstruct a secret recipe, or explain a sensory difference.
- It does not establish: Reliable recognition of every production batch, regulatory suitability, independent proof of authenticity, or current commercial use.
Chemistry World presented production-line quality control, adulteration checks and counterfeit-product checks as possible applications suggested by the team. Those are proposed uses, not evidence that the chip was deployed on production lines or that a fingerprint alone verifies authenticity. A 2021 review of lab-on-a-chip technologies in food also notes that only a fraction of fabricated devices reach the market, citing performance, user acceptance and cost as obstacles: review of lab-on-a-chip technologies for food.
How this differs from other cola tests
“Lab-on-a-chip” describes a broad family of small-scale analytical systems, not one measurement method. Other studies have targeted particular substances in cola, answering a different question from the 2013 whole-sample fingerprint.

The distinction matters: a test built to measure caffeine, phosphate or glucose can report on that target, while the fluorescence array reports a combined response that separates samples without identifying their individual constituents.
What “lab-on-a-chip” means in education
Small-scale chemical analysis can also be used to teach measurement. Stockholm University’s Chemistry Section describes a 2023 workshop for year-nine students in which participants made chip designs and used wax-crayon-patterned paper sensors to measure phosphate content in Coca-Cola: Stockholm University’s workshop account. That classroom activity used paper sensors for a specified analyte; it is not evidence that the 2013 fluorescence device is sold as a classroom kit.

Why the comparison attracted attention
The appeal was the contrast between a familiar drink and an analytical problem: a complicated liquid can yield a repeatable-looking pattern even when the method does not isolate each chemical in it. That makes the fingerprint concept useful for distinguishing tested samples, while also setting a clear boundary on what the result means. Chemistry World quoted University of Glasgow researcher Lee Cronin: “It will be interesting to see how this technique takes off and how it compares with other techniques that are used as competitors in the liquid fingerprinting field.”
