By tuning that reaction rate, researchers could influence how many crystals nucleate, target particle size while taking the reactants to full conversion, and improve batch consistency. The reported cost and yield advantages are promising research results—not proof of today’s market prices or commercial adoption.
Why precursor reaction speed matters
Quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals whose optical behavior depends on particle size: size affects the wavelengths of light they absorb and emit. Making batches with a controlled size is therefore important when targeting particular optical properties.

In metal-sulfide nanocrystal synthesis, a sulfur-bearing precursor supplies the sulfur needed for crystal formation. How quickly that precursor converts affects the timing and amount of material available for nucleation—the formation of the first crystal particles. Faster conversion can create more nuclei. With more particles sharing the available material, the resulting crystals can be smaller; slower conversion can produce fewer nuclei and allow more growth per particle. The outcome depends on the reaction conditions, but precursor kinetics provide a way to steer formation rather than relying only on stopping growth at a chosen point.
How substituted thioureas control nanocrystal formation
Hendricks, Campos, Cleveland, Jen-La Plante and Owen reported their study in Science on 12 June 2015. They developed a library of substituted thioureas that act as tunable sulfide precursors. Changing the substituents changes how readily each compound converts, allowing researchers to adjust the rate at which sulfide becomes available during synthesis.

The paper reports that the substitution pattern can tune precursor conversion reactivity across more than five orders of magnitude. In the authors’ account, this kinetic control lets researchers adjust nanocrystal concentration and prepare a desired crystal size while bringing the reactants to full conversion. The central idea is to set formation conditions through precursor reactivity, rather than to leave unused reactants in the mixture as a way of limiting crystal growth. The PubMed record and abstract describe the study’s findings.
Why the precursor is practical to make
A 2015 Chemistry World report describes the approach as a modification of hot-injection synthesis. It says the substituted thioureas are air-stable and can be made at room temperature from industrially available isothiocyanates and amines. The report also says the researchers could reproducibly adjust reaction rate and the resulting absorption peaks. The report gives the contemporary context for those claims.

How the approach compares with stopping crystal growth
The conventional strategy described in the 2015 report limits growth by terminating the reaction before all available reactants are consumed. The substituted-thiourea approach instead aims to control nucleation through precursor reactivity and reach full conversion. The sources describe advantages for yield and batch consistency, but do not provide a complete, quantified head-to-head dataset for every comparison below.

What the 2015 cost and yield claims do—and do not—show
Chemistry World reported that the precursor chemicals could be up to 100 times cheaper than some sulfide precursors then in use. That was a 2015 comparison, not a current price quote, and it does not establish the cost of producing finished quantum dots. The same report described reaction yields as approaching 100%; “approaching” matters, and the figure should not be read as a universal outcome.

The 2015 report described display manufacturers’ interest in quantum dots for vivid colors, and noted potential interest in improving solar-cell efficiency. It also reported that companies were launching products and learning to scale up quantum-dot reactions, but did not establish that those companies used this specific thiourea synthesis.

Solar cells and photodetectors were presented as future laboratory prospects, not as commercial products demonstrated by this study. Jonathan S. Owen, identified in the report as a Columbia University researcher, said, “There’s no question that thioureas will replace many of the sulfur precursors people are using now.” He also said, “Those companies would benefit from our approach.” These were forecasts and assessments reported in 2015, not evidence of present-day adoption. The available sources establish the study’s reported results and contemporary outlook, but not current use, market prices, or commercial uptake of this exact method.
