DKMS is required to build Falco’s kernel-module driver, but it is not required when Falco uses Modern eBPF and the system meets that driver’s requirements. The message “DKMS is not going to be installed” alone does not show whether Falco itself can be installed, or why the package manager declined DKMS. The right next step depends on which driver the lab expects and on the complete package-manager output.
Why Falco may need DKMS
Falco collects syscall events through a kernel driver. Its documented options include the kernel-module driver and Modern eBPF; plugin-only data sources do not require a kernel driver. See the Falco documentation on kernel events.

For the kernel-module path on Debian or Ubuntu, Falco’s package instructions list dkms, make, and headers matching the running kernel, shown as linux-headers-$(uname -r), as build dependencies. Package names and header availability vary by distribution. These dependencies are for building the module; a package manager declining to install DKMS does not, by itself, establish that Falco cannot be installed or run. Do not change the driver just to make the warning disappear: match the lab’s intended setup. Falco’s package guide exposes FALCO_DRIVER_CHOICE options including kmod, modern_ebpf, and none; none disables service installation. The guide also documents interactive and non-interactive setup, so the absence of a dialog alone does not identify a dependency problem.

What to check when DKMS will not be installed
The title does not include enough information to identify the cause. The message could reflect an optional recommendation, a dependency-resolution issue, or the selected package choices. A specific diagnosis needs the distribution and release, Falco version, exact install command, intended driver, and the complete package-manager output.
If the lab requires kmod, use Falco’s current instructions for the matching distribution and check that headers for the running kernel are available. If Secure Boot or another system policy requires signed modules, consult Falco’s startup troubleshooting guidance about DKMS and module signing. Signing is relevant to building or loading a module, but the DKMS message alone does not show that signing caused it.

Separate package installation from driver loading
A package manager declining to install DKMS and Falco later failing to find a prebuilt driver are different conditions. Falco says that a “cannot find a prebuilt driver” loader error means no prebuilt driver was found for the running kernel; investigate obtaining or building a compatible driver using the package documentation. That later error does not explain why DKMS was excluded from the original package transaction.
