On Ubuntu 18.04.5, enable an Apache module with sudo a2enmod MODULE, check the full configuration with sudo apache2ctl configtest, and restart Apache only after the check reports Syntax Ok. If it fails, use the diagnostic’s file and line to locate the problem, correct it, and run the check again.
Enable an Apache module safely
- Check what is available: run
ls /etc/apache2/mods-availableand confirm the module’s name. Ubuntu’s module setup keeps available modules in this directory. Ubuntu’s a2enmod manual explains that enabling a module creates symlinks in/etc/apache2/mods-enabled. - Enable the module: run
sudo a2enmod MODULE, replacingMODULEwith the name you checked. Some modules have both a.loadfile and an associated.conffile; enabling one can load the module and apply its configuration directives in the main server context. - Validate the complete configuration: run
sudo apache2ctl configtest. Do not treat a successfula2enmodmessage as proof that all Apache configuration files are valid. - Restart after a passing check: if the result is
Syntax Ok, runsudo systemctl restart apache2.service. This is the restart workflow documented by Ubuntu for module changes. Ubuntu’s Apache2 guide gives an example of disabling and re-enabling a module with a restart after each change. - If the check fails: fix the file and line identified in the diagnostic, rerun
sudo apache2ctl configtest, and restart only once it passes.
Understand a2enmod messages
If a2enmod reports that a module is already enabled, that is not itself an error. The manual documents exit status 0 for successful processing, 1 when errors occur, and 2 for an invalid option. Its syntax is a2enmod [[-q|--quiet] module]; -q suppresses informational output. See the Ubuntu manual for a2enmod.

The module is not found
If the requested name is absent from /etc/apache2/mods-available, verify the spelling and check which package should provide it. The directory lists modules available on that system; the absence of a module does not establish why it is missing.

Check whether the module that provides that directive is enabled, then run sudo apache2ctl configtest again. Module availability and configuration syntax are separate checks: enabling a module changes the enabled-module links, while the syntax test parses Apache’s configuration files.

Read Apache’s syntax diagnostic
The Apache apachectl reference describes configtest as a syntax check that parses the configuration files and reports either Syntax Ok or detailed information about a syntax error. It returns 0 on success and a value greater than 0 when an error occurs. Apache HTTP Server: apachectl
When the output includes Syntax error on line N of FILE, open that file and inspect the named line in context. Correct the configuration there, then run the test again. A reported line is a useful location to start; read the full diagnostic rather than assuming the line alone explains every related issue.

Find startup and request errors in logs
When Apache will not start
Inspect the system-service output and /var/log/apache2/error.log. Use the service’s failure details alongside the Apache error log to identify a startup problem. If the expected log is empty, confirm the active global and virtual-host configuration: local settings may change log destinations.
When a request fails
Correlate the request’s timestamp and URL with the access log. Ubuntu documents /var/log/apache2/access.log as the default transfer log, but a virtual host can select another destination with CustomLog. Ubuntu’s Apache2 guide

An HTTP error response and the server’s diagnostic error log are different things. For example, Apache’s ErrorDocument directive controls the response body shown for events such as a 404; it does not identify where diagnostic errors are logged.
