kX Project Audio Driver 5.10.0.3537 was a genuine beta WDM driver released on February 17, 2004. It targeted selected Creative and E-mu sound cards built around the EMU10K1 or EMU10K2 processors, including many Sound Blaster Live!, Audigy, Audigy2, and E-mu APS models. Its documented operating systems were Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP—not current Windows 10 or Windows 11.
The name is inconsistent: download catalogs commonly say 5.10.0.3537 Beta, while the project’s historical changelog says 5.00.3537 (BETA). “5.10.3537” is best treated as a shortened catalog label. Verify the exact card, operating system, and archive provenance before installing.

What the 3537 driver is
kX Project was an independent project that supplied free WDM drivers and a kX Mixer application for compatible Creative and E-mu hardware. Unlike a generic Windows sound driver, kX exposed low-level DSP routing, effects, SoundFont MIDI functions, and professional-oriented interfaces.

Supported sound cards
Eligibility depends on the audio processor and exact model, not merely the retail brand. Historical descriptions cover:
- Creative Sound Blaster Live! cards
- Creative Audigy and Audigy2 cards
- E-mu Audio Production Studio (APS) cards
- Other Creative/E-mu models using EMU10K1 or EMU10K2 hardware
- Some OEM and model-specific devices added during the 3537 cycle
Check the card’s model number, revision, and chipset first. A Sound Blaster or Audigy label alone does not prove compatibility; I/O arrangements and digital-routing capabilities can differ between revisions. Earlier hardware descriptions are archived by TechSpot.
Operating-system compatibility
| System | How to interpret the evidence |
|---|---|
| Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP | These are the release-specific target systems listed by the archive. |
| Windows 7-era systems | Possible experimentation only; compatibility for this exact build is not established. |
| Windows 10 or 11, especially 64-bit | Do not assume compatibility. The 2004 package predates modern signing and security requirements. |
Later kX builds do not make 3537 compatible with a newer Windows release. For a modern daily-use PC, use a supported driver or contemporary audio hardware instead.

What changed in 3537
The project’s beta changelog records fixes and additions rather than a promise of identical behavior on every card:
Rank #2

- SMP and HyperThreading compatibility fixes.
- Corrected 24/96 loopback and post-reboot Master-volume levels.
- Improved Audigy2 S/PDIF output quality.
- Better SoundFont handling for looped and non-looped samples and fixes involving
sfman32.dll. - Improved decoding of non-standard AC-3 streams.
- Saved plugin-window positions, corrected peak-meter display, and fixed kX Automation and headphone-muting issues.
- Added Expander, Expander+, WaveGen3, Delay A, Delay B, and Dynamics Processor DSP effects; optimized FXMix2.
- Corrected DSP resource reporting, added card-specific I/O labels and text alignment to the kX API, and fixed invalid FX routings related to the “no reverb” issue.
Features such as 24/96, S/PDIF, AC-3, and p16v routing remain card- and path-dependent.
Capabilities provided by the kX package
Historical feature descriptions list Wave playback and recording, SoundFont MIDI synthesis, MIDI UART I/O, DirectSound 2D/3D, ASIO, GSIF, DSP routing and effects, and S/PDIF/AC-3 functions on applicable hardware. A broader archive description is at Softpedia.
These interfaces are not equally available on every card. ASIO or GSIF applications, SoundFont banks, and digital output generally require additional kX Mixer and DSP configuration after the driver is installed.
Recommended Free Tools
Should you install it today?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Windows XP/earlier period-correct system with a verified EMU10K1/10K2 card | Reasonable for restoration, SoundFonts, DSP routing, or legacy ASIO/GSIF work if you can roll back. |
| Windows 7 experiment | Use only as an isolated trial; exact 3537 compatibility is unverified. |
| Windows 10/11 production or business PC | Poor fit; do not bypass driver-signing and security protections casually. |
| Non-EMU10K1/10K2 card | Do not install. |
| Original Creative driver already works and basic playback is all you need | Keep the manufacturer driver. |
Preparation and cautious installation
The following is a conservative legacy workflow, not a verbatim 3537 installer manual.
Rank #3
- Identify the exact card and confirm its EMU10K1/EMU10K2 basis.
- Record Creative-driver versions and document mixer, MIDI, DSP, and S/PDIF settings.
- Create a restore point or, preferably on a Windows 9x/XP machine, a full disk image. Keep the working manufacturer driver.
- Obtain files from the official kX binary repository or a reputable archive. Avoid repacked executables; scan any old file. No authoritative checksum for the exact 3537 executable is established here.
- On Windows 2000/XP, use administrative privileges. Remove or disable the existing Creative stack only if the installer or your documented rollback plan requires it, then reboot.
- Run the installer, allow Windows to install its WDM components, and reboot when requested.
- Open kX Mixer. Confirm playback and recording devices, speaker routing, MIDI, and digital-output settings.
- Test ordinary Wave playback first. Configure SoundFonts, ASIO, GSIF, DSP effects, and S/PDIF only after basic audio works.
Troubleshooting and rollback
No sound or missing device
Check Device Manager for a disabled or misidentified card, then verify kX Mixer playback device and DSP routing. If detection remains wrong, restore the previous driver or disk image rather than forcing an unknown package.
Conflicts with Creative software
Third-party installation can change device names, MIDI numbering, mixer controls, SoundFont handling, ASIO selection, and S/PDIF defaults. Remove leftovers only with the project’s uninstall procedure or normal operating-system driver tools, then reinstall the manufacturer driver if necessary.
S/PDIF, AC-3, or 24/96 problems
Confirm that the card revision and physical digital hardware support the requested path, then inspect kX routing. The 3537 changelog does not make these functions universal.
Instability or failed setup
Cancel rather than force installation on an unsupported system. Reboot, use your restore point or image, and avoid disabling modern driver-signing protections on a connected production computer.

Where to obtain an authentic copy
Start with the kX Project’s GitHub binary repository, which includes later builds and an “Old versions” area. The available evidence does not confirm that a directly downloadable 3537 installer is currently exposed there, so do not assume every mirror copy is official. The changelog is maintained at this project repository.
Alternatives
- Later kX builds: The repository lists files such as
kxdrv3552-full.zip; verify their hardware and Windows requirements separately. - Original Creative or E-mu drivers: Prefer these for ordinary playback, period application compatibility, and stability over advanced routing.
- Dedicated legacy computer: A Windows XP-or-earlier machine is safer for experimentation than forcing a 2004 beta onto a current PC.
- Modern interface or supported sound card: Usually the practical choice for current Windows systems.

It offers deeper DSP, routing, SoundFont, ASIO, and GSIF control; the original driver is generally simpler for basic playback and compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Use 3537 only for a verified EMU10K1/EMU10K2 card in a controlled legacy Windows setup. It is a real but beta-era package—not a current Windows driver—and its inconsistent version labels and age make provenance, backups, and rollback essential.
