MSI MPG 491CQP vs 491CQPX: The 49-Inch QD-OLED Monitor Model Mix-Up Explained

By Freedom251 Team · · 6 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no verified MSI model called “MPG 491CQP X” that combines the CQP name with a 240Hz refresh rate. MSI sells two separate monitors: the MPG 491CQP QD-OLED at 144Hz and the MPG 491CQPX QD-OLED at 240Hz. If a listing says “491CQP 240Hz,” check the complete model number before buying.

The CQP is the value-oriented choice when 144Hz is enough; the CQPX is the model for buyers who specifically need 240Hz, higher USB-C power delivery and its newer feature set.

What Dual QHD means

Both monitors use 5120×1440 resolution, effectively two 2560×1440 screens side by side. That is about 7.37 million pixels—slightly fewer than 4K’s roughly 8.29 million—so it is not a 4K ultrawide. The 32:9 canvas is excellent for side-by-side windows, racing simulators, flight games and wide strategy maps, but it demands much more GPU power than ordinary 2560×1440 gaming.

  • Video and console output is commonly 16:9, leaving unused side areas rather than creating native 32:9 gameplay.

MPG 491CQP specifications

MSI lists the CQP as a 49-inch, 1800R curved QD-OLED with 5120×1440 resolution, 144Hz refresh, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, DisplayHDR True Black 400, 10-bit color and approximately 1.07 billion colors. Its claimed 0.03ms GtG response time is a manufacturer specification, not an independent latency measurement. Full details are on MSI’s specification page.

The manual lists 250-nit typical SDR brightness and a 1,500,000:1 typical contrast ratio. DisplayHDR True Black 400 confirms OLED black-level behavior under that certification; it does not mean the display sustains 1,000-nit HDR brightness.

Image quality and HDR expectations

QD-OLED pixels can switch completely off, producing true blacks and very high pixel-level contrast. The panel also offers a wide gamut and rapid pixel transitions, making dark games and HDR scenes especially convincing. Brightness remains the trade-off: the published SDR figure is modest, and real HDR impact depends on image size, content and the display’s tone mapping. Do not treat the 0.03ms or HDR labels as substitutes for independent measurements.

Gaming: 144Hz or 240Hz?

When 144Hz is enough

The CQP’s 144Hz is already smooth for most single-player games, simulators and mixed-use systems. At 5120×1440, many demanding titles will not approach 240 frames per second at high settings, making the CQP’s lower price potentially better spent on a faster graphics card.

Who benefits from 240Hz

Choose the CQPX when you play high-frame-rate competitive games, own a high-end GPU that can produce substantially more than 144fps, and are sensitive to motion latency. A 240Hz ceiling does not automatically improve every game; the benefit depends on sustained frame rate, game engine behavior and your own sensitivity.

Console limitations

The CQP’s HDMI 2.1 inputs are specified as 48Gbps ports with console-oriented 120Hz, VRR and ALLM support. HDMI 2.1 does not make either monitor a native 32:9 console display. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X output modes generally mean 16:9 presentation, with resolution and refresh determined by the console’s supported modes.

  • Incredible HDR visual – VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400.
  • Gaming Intelligence App – Create the perfect viewing settings for your games.

Ports, USB-C and KVM

The CQP provides one DisplayPort 1.4a, two HDMI 2.1 inputs, USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode and up to 90W power delivery, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-B upstream connection, headphone output and a built-in KVM. The CQPX raises USB-C delivery to 98W and supports 5120×1440 at up to 240Hz over its specified DisplayPort and USB-C paths; MSI lists HDMI 2.1 support for DQHD at up to 240Hz on that model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical desktop-and-laptop wiring setup

  1. Connect the gaming desktop to DisplayPort or HDMI.
  2. Connect the work laptop to the monitor’s USB-C port. The laptop must support DisplayPort Alt Mode.
  3. Attach the keyboard and mouse to the monitor’s USB-A ports.
  4. Use the monitor’s KVM controls to select which computer receives the USB peripherals.
  5. For a desktop using video over DisplayPort or HDMI, connect the monitor’s USB-B upstream cable to the desktop so KVM data can reach it.

USB-C video, USB data and charging are separate capabilities negotiated by the devices and cable. The advertised 90W or 98W is a maximum, not a guarantee that every laptop will charge at that rate under sustained load. Gaming laptops may still require their own AC adapter.

Productivity, text and burn-in risk

A 49-inch 32:9 screen can replace two monitors without a bezel in the middle. The 1800R curve keeps the distant edges within a more natural viewing angle, and OLED contrast makes dark interfaces look rich. However, OLED subpixel structure can produce color fringing or softer text than a conventional LCD in some applications. Results vary with operating-system scaling, font rendering, viewing distance and individual sensitivity.

  • QD Premium Color – Ensures the color meets the market standard – Delta E≤2.
  • Incredible HDR visual – VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400.
  • MSI OLED Care 2.0 – Reduced the risk of OLED burn-in.

Static office elements—taskbars, spreadsheets, browser chrome and IDE panels—create more uneven-wear exposure than varied gaming. OLED is not automatically unsuitable for work, but all-day static use deserves more caution than mixed content.

Use OLED Care consistently

  • Let pixel-shift and panel-maintenance routines run when prompted.
  • Use screen timeout and sleep settings.
  • Hide or move static taskbars where practical.
  • Vary content, use dark mode and avoid leaving bright fixed windows open for many hours every day.
  • Do not interrupt a required refresh cycle unless the on-screen instructions or manual allow it.

These measures reduce uneven wear; they cannot guarantee burn-in prevention. MSI advertises OLED Care 2.0 and a three-year OLED panel warranty including burn-in in relevant regions, but coverage depends on country, seller, purchase channel and exclusions. Check the applicable terms on MSI’s product page before relying on the warranty.

Desk space, stand and mounting

The CQP is approximately 1195mm wide, 328mm deep and 410mm tall with its stand. It weighs about 10.3kg without packaging, supports 100×100mm VESA mounting, offers up to 100mm of height adjustment, −5° to 20° tilt and −30° to 30° swivel. The CQPX is listed at about 10.6kg and adds pivot adjustment; use its specification page for exact dimensions.

Who should buy each model?

Buy the MPG 491CQP

  • You find it at a meaningful discount.
  • 144Hz meets your gaming needs.
  • You want OLED contrast, USB-C and KVM without paying for 240Hz.
  • Your games or GPU cannot exploit 240Hz at 5120×1440.

Buy the MPG 491CQPX

  • 240Hz is a specific requirement.
  • Your GPU and games can sustain high frame rates at DQHD.
  • Up to 98W USB-C power is useful.
  • You prefer the newer model and accept the premium.

Choose another display instead

A conventional LCD is safer for heavy static office use, sustained brightness and buyers who cannot accept OLED maintenance. A 34-inch 21:9 monitor is easier to fit, offers broader game and video compatibility, and provides more vertical density relative to desk width.

Buying and troubleshooting checklist

  • Verify the full model number on the box, invoice and monitor information screen: CQP means 144Hz; CQPX means 240Hz.
  • Use an appropriately rated DisplayPort, HDMI or USB-C cable; not every USB-C cable carries the required video bandwidth.
  • Confirm your GPU supports 5120×1440 at the desired refresh rate.
  • For a laptop, confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode and realistic USB-C charging requirements.
  • If the panel fails to wake after maintenance or a firmware change, power-cycle the monitor and source, test another input, recheck input and refresh settings, temporarily disable DSC or HDR for diagnosis, and consult MSI’s model-specific support page before attempting firmware procedures.

MSI provides product support and firmware information through the CQP support page; available firmware and instructions can change.

Verdict

MPG 491CQP: the sensible discounted choice for a 49-inch QD-OLED workspace and 144Hz gaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MPG 491CQPX: the correct purchase when the headline requirement is 240Hz, provided your hardware and games can use it.

Neither: avoid both if your priority is static office work with no OLED-care routine, native console 32:9 gaming, 4K-class vertical detail or a compact desk setup.
