It is a worthwhile upgrade from a foot-only smart scale for people tracking weight, body-fat percentage and skeletal-muscle trends under consistent conditions. It is not a DEXA substitute, a diagnostic device, or the best choice if you require Wi-Fi, a backlit display or the newest app metrics.
At the time of review, InBody’s US store listed the H20/H20N at $299 new and a refurbished H20N at $249. Prices, stock, warranty and returns can change, so verify the current listing before buying: new H20 and refurbished H20N.

What “full-body” means on the H20N
The H20N uses eight tactile electrodes: two under your feet and contacts in the handgrip. A very low electrical current is measured through five segments—right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg—rather than primarily through the lower body. InBody specifies 10 impedance measurements at 20 kHz and 100 kHz. The method is described on the official product page.
That is more informative than a conventional foot-only scale, but “full-body” does not mean the scale directly images fat, muscle or organs. It is still bioelectrical-impedance analysis (BIA): impedance is converted by algorithms into estimated body-composition values.

Additional app results
After Bluetooth synchronization, the InBody app can store history and show body-fat mass, basal metabolic rate and InBody Score alongside weight, BMI, percentage fat and skeletal muscle mass. The current H20N comparison information does not list visceral-fat level for this model; that output appears in InBody’s H30 comparison, not as a confirmed H20N feature (comparison page).
Accuracy: useful evidence, limited certainty
What the H20N-versus-DXA study found
A 2026 peer-reviewed study of 55 adults with obesity (average age about 62.6 years and average BMI about 37.6) compared the H20N with DXA and an InBody S10. Agreement was reported as:
| Comparison | Intraclass correlation (ICC) | Interpretation reported in the study |
|---|---|---|
| H20N vs DXA: skeletal muscle mass | 0.78 | Good agreement |
| H20N vs DXA: percentage fat mass | 0.93 | Excellent agreement |
| H20N vs InBody S10: skeletal muscle mass | 0.93 | Excellent agreement |
| H20N vs InBody S10: percentage fat mass | 0.81 | Good agreement |
Read those figures as evidence that readings tracked the reference methods reasonably well in that specific population—not as proof that every person’s result is interchangeable with DXA. The study is available at PMC and its PubMed record is at PubMed.

Weight versus body composition
Weight is generally the least complicated measurement when the scale sits on a hard, level surface. The available product information does not establish an independent error tolerance for a particular H20N unit, so an exact weight-accuracy claim would be unwarranted.
Body-fat and muscle estimates can move with hydration, meals, exercise, sleep, sauna use, skin contact and menstrual-cycle water changes. A consumer-scale study found that smart scales should not replace DXA in patient care (full article; PubMed). The practical conclusion is to use the H20N as a repeatable trend tool: a consistent routine matters more than treating one percentage as an exact physiological measurement.
How to get consistent readings
Use the same conditions for every comparison. InBody’s guidance and manual recommend this routine:

- Place the scale on a hard, flat floor—not carpet.
- Measure barefoot, with clean contact on the foot electrodes.
- Hold the handle correctly with your arms extended in front of your hips.
- Keep both feet aligned on the electrodes and stand still.
- Measure at a consistent time, ideally after an approximately three-to-four-hour fast.
- Avoid testing immediately after food, drink, exercise, poor sleep or sauna use.
- Keep skin free of lotion. Very dry hands or feet may need cleaning or slight moistening as described in the manual.
- Repeat weekly, or on another schedule you can maintain, rather than reacting to single-day changes.
Height must be entered correctly because it affects the calculation. Different InBody devices—such as an H20N, gym-based S10, H30 or H40—should not be assumed to produce numerically interchangeable results.
Setup, app and connectivity
- Insert four 1.5-volt AA batteries.
- Enter the requested user profile information.
- Stand on the platform, grip both hand electrodes and complete the approximately eight-second test.
- Enable Bluetooth, open the InBody app and pair or synchronize while your phone is nearby.
- Review the expanded metrics and history in the app.
The H20N uses Bluetooth 4.1 and has no Wi-Fi, so it does not upload automatically when your phone is absent. Exact app screens and profile-selection labels can vary by country and software version; confirm the current flow in the app rather than relying on an older guide.
Common problems
- No reading: check barefoot foot contact, hand contact, batteries and hard-floor placement.
- Body-fat values jump: standardize time, fasting, hydration, exercise, sleep and skin condition.
- Bluetooth will not pair: turn Bluetooth on, stay close, close and reopen the app, then remove and re-pair the scale if needed.
- Unexpected metrics: check the registered country or region; InBody notes that app outputs can differ by country.
- Several people use it: verify the selected profile before each test and confirm the result synced to the correct account.
- The scale was moved: return it to a hard, level surface and retest under your normal routine.

H20N versus H20B
InBody says the H20N and H20B use the same core technology and similar specifications, with differences including color and accreditation. InBody’s support page says the H20B has FDA 510(k) clearance and is registered as a Class II medical device. Do not transfer that regulatory status to the H20N: official distinction.
Compared with a foot-only smart scale
A cheaper foot-only scale may be the sensible choice if you mainly need weight and broad, low-cost trends. The H20N earns its premium through hand-to-foot, five-segment measurement and an established InBody app ecosystem—not through a guarantee that its individual body-fat number is clinically exact.

Compared with DEXA
DEXA or clinician-directed testing is the appropriate path when a formal assessment is medically important. It is not a replacement for a convenient home trend monitor, and the H20N study does not establish universal DEXA interchangeability.
Who should buy the InBody H20N?
Good fit
- People who specifically want hand-to-foot BIA instead of a foot-only estimate.
- Users tracking fat loss, muscle gain or recomposition over months.
- Fitness users willing to measure under standardized conditions.
- Households that want multiple profiles and Bluetooth app history.
- Buyers comfortable paying about $249 refurbished or $299 new when available.
Look elsewhere if you need
- Clinically definitive body-fat or muscle measurements.
- Wi-Fi syncing without opening an app.
- A backlit display or the newest connectivity.
- Confirmed visceral-fat, waist-to-hip or advanced segmental outputs.
- A low-cost scale for weight-only tracking.
- A device for diagnosis or treatment decisions.
Special situations
Pregnancy, pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices, childhood use, amputation or major asymmetry, marked dehydration or edema, acute illness and very muscular or very lean physiques can fall outside normal validation or safety assumptions. Follow the manual’s warnings and ask a qualified clinician when appropriate; do not infer suitability from the published height and weight ranges alone.
Final recommendation
Buy the H20N when your priority is full-body, hand-to-foot trend tracking and you accept Bluetooth-only connectivity. At full price, it makes most sense for someone who values the segmental method; a refurbished unit may improve the value if its warranty, returns, accessories and condition meet your needs. Choose the H30 for Wi-Fi, backlighting and broader outputs, a cheaper foot-only scale for basic weight tracking, or DEXA/clinical testing when precision has medical consequences.

Does the H20N measure visceral fat?
InBody’s current H20N information does not list visceral-fat level as an H20N output. The H30 comparison lists that metric for the H30, so verify the exact model and regional app before buying.
Is the InBody H20N a medical device?
Do not assume so. InBody’s support information specifically identifies FDA 510(k) clearance and Class II registration for the H20B, not automatically for the H20N.
