KV-Cache-Friendly Agent Design: How Prompt Caching Can Cut Costs

Keeping an agent’s reusable prompt prefix stable can enable prompt caching and reduce repeated-input costs. Provider rules and real workload measurements determine the actual savings.

KV-cache-friendly agent design keeps the reusable beginning of a prompt stable so a supported API can reuse its computed key-value (KV) state on later calls. That can reduce repeated-input processing costs and latency, but it does not guarantee a 10× reduction in total agent costs. The actual result depends on the provider, model, cache rules, and how much of each request is repeated.

What prompt caching reuses

A language model computes internal key-value tensors as it processes input. Prompt caching lets a provider retain those tensors for an eligible prompt prefix and reuse them when a later request begins with a matching prefix. It is not simply a shortcut that stores the prompt’s text: the model still processes new input and generates a new response. OpenAI describes the mechanism in its prompt caching documentation.

For an agent, the rendered context may include system and developer instructions, tool definitions, reference material, and conversation history. A stable session by itself does not ensure a hit; the relevant prefix must match and satisfy the provider’s requirements.

How to make an agent’s prompt cache-friendly

  1. Identify what repeats. Separate global instructions, stable tool schemas, and reusable reference material from per-request content and changing tool results.
  2. Keep the reusable prefix stable. Preserve the same content and ordering across calls to the extent the provider requires. Avoid putting changing timestamps, request IDs, or dynamic results near the start if they would disrupt a matching prefix.
  3. Put changing content later. Place the user’s current request and changing tool outputs after stable material, subject to the provider’s cache boundaries and API rules.
  4. Use breakpoints only when useful. If the API supports explicit cache breakpoints, choose them based on the provider’s current rules and measurements from your workload.
  5. Check eligibility and lifetime. Confirm the minimum cacheable prompt length, eligible content, cache duration, and behavior for the exact model and hosting platform you use.
  6. Measure real runs. Compare cached reads, cache writes, uncached input, output, latency, and total cost across representative agent tasks.

OpenAI and Anthropic handle caching differently

Both providers document prompt caching, but their eligibility rules, cache controls, lifetimes, and pricing treatment are not interchangeable. Anthropic describes cacheable content and cache-control breakpoints across tools, system instructions, and messages; the applicable minimum lengths and durations depend on model and platform. Consult its prompt caching documentation before designing around a specific boundary.

What the reported savings do—and do not—show

Provider-published figures show that caching can make a substantial difference in some settings, but they describe different measures and examples:

MX3 M.2 AI Accelerator
  • High-Performance AI Processing: The MX3 is designed to handle the most demanding AI computer vision workloads, delivering exceptional performance and efficiency.
  • Flexible Integration: The MX3 can be easily integrated into your existing systems via its M.2 M-key form factor and support for Linux operating systems.
  • Energy Efficient: The MX3 is designed to provide high performance while minimizing power consumption.
  • Comprehensive Software Development Kit (SDK): The MX3 is supported by a comprehensive SDK that simplifies development and deployment.
  • Hardware compatability: The MX3 is compatible with the PCI-SIG M.2 M-key 2280 Specification. It can be used with the Raspberry Pi 5 with a M-key 2280 HAT.
  • OpenAI’s documentation describes cached-input discounts of up to 95% for supported models. This is a discount on eligible cached input, not a 95% reduction in total agent cost.
  • Anthropic’s Optimizing for cost and intelligence guide reports a 2.7–5.3× reduction in agent-loop cost on its benchmarks. It also reports an 83% reduction for a small triage agent from caching alone, and 88% when input trimming was added. These are provider-measured examples, not guaranteed outcomes for another agent.

A 2026 arXiv preprint evaluating more than 500 agent sessions reports that cache-block placement can affect cost and time-to-first-token. That result supports testing placement in a real harness; it does not establish a production-wide saving. See the study.

The headline’s “10” is not established as a general result by these figures. A cache hit affects eligible repeated input; changing input and generated output still contribute to the workload, and hits are not guaranteed. The useful measure is total cost and latency for your own agent tasks, not a cached-input discount in isolation.

A practical measurement checklist

  • Record cache reads and writes separately from uncached input and output usage.
  • Compare representative tasks with and without the cache-friendly prompt layout.
  • Track latency as well as cost, including time-to-first-token if it matters to your application.
  • Check whether dynamic tool definitions or frequently changing context are breaking the reusable prefix.
  • Recheck provider documentation when changing model, platform, cache duration, or pricing assumptions.
