Single Bank or Many? Choosing a Memory Boundary in Hindsight

In Hindsight, the choice between one fixed bank and runtime bank selection is really a choice about memory sharing, isolation and who owns routing.

In Hindsight, a bank is a boundary for agent memory: retain, recall and reflect work within that bank, and built-in queries do not span banks. The practical choice is whether the client should always use one configured bank or whether application logic should choose among banks at runtime.

The title’s “almost got wrong” framing calls for a real account of what was nearly chosen and what exposed the risk. Product documentation can explain the design tradeoff, but it cannot establish an author’s personal decision or consequence. The useful lesson is to decide the memory-sharing boundary before deciding who routes requests.

What a Hindsight bank controls

A Hindsight bank is a logical memory and recall boundary, not a claim about a physical database or a SaaS tenant database. Hindsight’s field guide says retain, recall and reflect operate within one bank, with no built-in query across banks. If information is retained in one bank, another bank does not automatically gain access to it. See Hindsight’s field guide to structuring agent memory.

That makes the deciding question less about how many agents or projects exist and more about whether they should share remembered information. The field guide’s test is: “If A retains a memory, should B be able to recall it?” A yes points toward a shared bank; a no points toward separate banks.

How single-bank and multi-bank routing differ

Hindsight’s comparison describes the distinction as ownership of routing: configuration fixes the bank in single-bank mode, while the application or client workflow chooses the bank in multi-bank mode. In the former, memory operations stay pinned to the configured bank and the client need not provide a bank ID on every operation. In the latter, the tool layer can select, create or switch banks dynamically and exposes bank-management tools. Details are in Hindsight’s single-bank versus multi-bank comparison.

Decision axis One fixed bank Multiple selectable banks
Routing Bank is set in configuration. Application or workflow selects a bank at runtime.
Client complexity Lower; no per-operation bank selection is needed. Higher; routing rules must reliably map users, projects or teams to banks.
Isolation Routing is fixed, reducing opportunities for runtime cross-bank mistakes. Depends on correct runtime mapping; a wrong mapping can route an operation to the wrong memory boundary.
Flexibility Less suited to a client that must switch contexts. Supports workflows that need distinct banks for different users, tenants, projects or contexts.
Recall sharing Memories are available within the configured bank. Separate banks isolate recall; multiple banks do not imply cross-bank access.
Fragmentation risk Lower when the fixed boundary matches the real sharing needs. Higher if bank IDs are unstable or too narrowly scoped, fragmenting useful history.

Hindsight’s vendor guidance is to ask, “Should this client ever need to choose a different bank at runtime?” If not, it suggests single-bank mode; if yes, multi-bank mode fits. The same comparison suggests starting with a fixed bank and moving to runtime selection when the need becomes real. That is vendor guidance, not a universal architecture rule.

Choose the boundary before the routing mode

Use one bank when contexts should share memory

If an agent, user or workflow should be able to recall the same retained information, keeping that information in one bank supports that sharing. When contexts are only soft partitions—for example, they benefit from tags for filtering but still sometimes need cross-reference—Hindsight’s guide recommends tags within a bank rather than separate banks.

Use separate banks for hard isolation

Separate banks are appropriate when one context must not recall another’s memories, such as distinct tenants, customers or untrusted contexts. They establish separate recall scopes; application behavior still needs to select the intended bank reliably.

Keep bank IDs stable

Hindsight says banks are created lazily on first use. That means a typo or an unstable ID can create a new, empty bank rather than produce an obvious failure. Avoid IDs that vary accidentally, and be wary of a bank-per-conversation scheme if conversations should build on shared history: overly narrow scopes can scatter useful memories among many banks.

How the analogy to database tenancy helps—and where it stops

The same broad tradeoff appears in multitenant storage: isolation, operational burden, cost and noisy-neighbor exposure must be balanced against actual requirements. Microsoft’s Azure Architecture Center guidance on multitenant storage says there is no single approach for every scenario. Relevant requirements can include compliance, physical isolation, customer-managed encryption keys, per-customer backup and restore, data geography, workload interference, operations and migration. Greater tenant density generally lowers provisioning cost, while shared infrastructure increases the likelihood of noisy-neighbor issues.

Microsoft’s Azure SQL SaaS tenancy guide contrasts database-per-tenant with shared multitenant databases. Dedicated databases can provide stronger isolation and more granular tenant restore or customization, but require management and schema automation across many databases. Shared databases can lower per-tenant cost, but require tenant identifiers and careful query scoping to reduce cross-tenant exposure; noisy neighbors remain a concern. A sharded design adds a tenant-to-database catalog and processes for adding, splitting, merging and moving shards.

This is an analogy, not an equivalence. A Hindsight bank determines memory recall scope and routing; a database tenancy model determines data placement and operational isolation. The recurring architectural question is how much separation the requirements demand and how much operational complexity is justified.

A practical decision rule

  1. Define the recall boundary. Ask whether one user, agent, project or context should be able to recall what another retains.
  2. Choose bank scope. Keep contexts together when memory should be shared; separate them when the boundary is hard. Use tags for soft partitions that may still need cross-reference.
  3. Choose routing. If the client never needs to change banks at runtime, a fixed single-bank configuration is simpler. If it must switch, use multi-bank routing and define explicit, stable mapping rules.
  4. Check IDs and failure behavior. Because a bank can be created on first use, make IDs deterministic and validate the mapping so a typo does not quietly direct memory operations into a new empty bank.

Hindsight is available as self-hosted software and through Hindsight Cloud; the managed service is not required to use the bank concept. Vectorize’s Hindsight pricing page describes usage-based billing for the managed service and a self-hosted option.
