Those are separate requirements: GPS can show your position without internet, but an online-only map will not load offline. Check the exact tablet and app, then test the whole setup in airplane mode before relying on it outdoors.
What an offline hiking GPS needs
Your tablet must be able to determine its location, and your mapping app must have the area’s map data stored locally. Gaia GPS says that after maps are downloaded, its users can use the device’s GPS to locate themselves and navigate offline. That is a vendor description of its service, not a guarantee that every tablet has GPS or that every map source covers your route.

- Positioning: A usable GPS/GNSS receiver in the tablet, or a separately verified compatible receiver. An app cannot add satellite hardware to a tablet that lacks it.
- Offline maps: Downloaded map data for the route and surrounding area, in an app that still installs and works on the tablet’s operating system.
A position dot without a useful offline map is not a topographic navigation display. Conversely, having a map saved does not guarantee that the tablet can locate you.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Look up the exact model number and its specifications; names such as “Wi-Fi” or “cellular” are not enough to establish what an unidentified tablet can do. Confirm that the mapping app is compatible with its operating system as well.

For an iPad
Apple lists GPS/GNSS on Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models. Its 10th-generation iPad specifications list GPS/GNSS for the Wi-Fi + Cellular variant, but not for the Wi-Fi-only variant. A Wi-Fi-only iPad can estimate location using nearby Wi-Fi networks, but that is not a dependable wilderness positioning method. Check the specific model rather than assuming all iPads—or all tablets—have satellite positioning. Apple’s 10th-generation iPad technical specifications
GPS reception is not guaranteed everywhere. Apple notes that mountains and other obstructions can block satellite visibility; location services may then rely on Wi-Fi or cellular until visibility returns. In remote terrain, those alternatives may not be available, so expect that the position display can be interrupted. Apple’s explanation of location services and GPS

Prepare and test the maps before the hike
Gaia GPS documents offline map downloads, but its current help articles say logging in and having a subscription are required to download maps. Available map sources and coverage vary, so check that the app offers a suitable map for your destination before planning around it. What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the device and app. Identify the tablet’s exact model, verify GPS/GNSS specifications, and check that the app runs on its installed operating system.
- Choose the map source and region. Check in the app that suitable maps are available for the intended route and can be saved offline. Gaia GPS currently says a subscription is required for its downloads; verify the rule in the app before departure.
- Download more than the trail line. Include the trail, junctions, trailheads, and plausible detours or exit routes. Gaia GPS recommends High resolution for hiking. On Apple devices, its instructions say to keep Gaia GPS in the foreground and the screen on until the download finishes.
- Test in airplane mode. Before leaving, enable airplane mode, open the app, and check that the saved maps appear at the zoom levels and detail you need. Confirm that the location marker works. Gaia GPS explicitly recommends this test; if the maps or positioning do not work, resolve that before relying on the tablet.
For Gaia GPS, offline snap-to-trail routing data is automatically downloaded with offline maps as of Android v2026.3 and iOS v2026.4, according to the company’s help article updated May 11, 2026. This is a version-specific feature, not a promise about other apps or older releases. Gaia GPS: Offline Snap-to-Trail Routing

Can you replace Google Maps?
You can use a compatible offline mapping app instead of relying on Google Maps for an offline hiking map, provided the tablet can locate you and the intended map is downloaded and tested. That does not mean every Google Maps function is replaced: the practical question is whether your chosen app has the offline map detail and route coverage you need. Check the actual region and zoom levels on the device before the hike.
Plan for the limits of an older tablet
The model, storage, battery condition, operating system, and destination are all device-specific. Do not assume that an older tablet will last a full hike or that enough storage is available; check available space and the actual device’s behavior during your preparation. The evidence does not establish a universal battery runtime for a ten-year-old tablet.

- Do not treat an app’s routing feature as a substitute for knowing where you are or how to navigate if the screen, battery, or satellite reception fails.
Carry a navigation backup
Bring a paper topographic map and compass, and know how to use them. Gaia GPS’s hiking guidance recommends carrying both as backup. A tablet is a useful additional navigation tool, not a replacement for navigation skills. Gaia GPS hiking guidance
