The right fix depends on the pod’s addresses, route tables, routing profile, and network fabric; without those details, prescribing a specific route would be guesswork.
What “multi-rail” and cross-rail routing mean
In NVIDIA’s Kubernetes Launch Kit, multi-rail means enabling more than one east-west rail. The Launch Kit documents both destination-based and source-based routing profiles. Those are alternatives for selecting a path; neither implies that every multi-rail pod should use one universal route or policy.

NVIDIA describes the SR-IOV CNI’s role this way: “The SR-IOV Container Network Interface (CNI) plugin provisions Virtual Function (VF) network devices into the Pods.” NVIDIA’s Kubernetes Using SR-IOV documentation also describes it working with a device plugin and a metaplugin such as Multus.
Multus participates in adding secondary network attachments and passes allocated device identifiers to delegate CNI plugins. A NetworkAttachmentDefinition can identify a device resource through an annotation. These components attach and configure networks; whether packets reach another rail still depends on the routes and surrounding network.

- 6 Pin to 8 Pin PCIe Adapter: Connect a 6-pin male PCIe power plug from a compatible power supply to the 8-pin PCIe power input on a supported graphics card. Confirm the connector types before ordering
- For Compatible Low-Power GPUs: Use the PCIe power adapter only when the power supply and its 6-pin PCIe connection provide sufficient power for the graphics card. Check the documented power requirements of the PSU and GPU before installation
- 8 Pin to 6 Pin PCIe Adapter: The GPU power adapter changes a 6-pin PCIe connection into an 8-pin connector but does not increase the PSU wattage, current capacity, or available power. It is not suitable for bypassing GPU power requirements
- Secure PCIe Connections: The 8-pin male connector features a locking latch, while the 6-pin female connector uses a keyed housing to support proper alignment and help prevent accidental disconnection
- Convenient 2-Pack: Use the two PCIe adapter cables with separate compatible systems or keep one as a spare. Compatible with select Gigabyte, Radeon, and Sapphire graphics cards with an 8-pin PCIe power input. Check the GPU power requirements before use. Not compatible with CPU/EPS 8-pin ports
Why the missing route cannot be named from the title
A route needs a destination prefix and, when applicable, a next hop and output interface. The title supplies none of the pod’s interface names or addresses, rail prefixes, gateways, or intended source-and-destination pairs. It therefore does not establish which route is absent, whether a gateway is reachable, or whether the deployment instead needs policy routing.
NVIDIA’s Launch Kit reference identifies routing options, but it does not provide a turnkey route for an unspecified topology. The appropriate choice depends on addressing, the network fabric, and workload traffic. Confirm the Launch Kit version and deployment profile, along with the cluster’s NVIDIA Network Operator, CNI, and Kubernetes versions, before applying version-specific guidance.

Inspect the pod and its routing before changing configuration
- Identify attached interfaces and addresses. Inspect the pod’s network namespace and record each interface, its address and prefix, and the secondary network attachment that supplied it. Establish which interface corresponds to each rail.
- Capture routes and policy rules. Record the pod’s route table and policy-routing rules, not just the default route. Note which table and interface a destination or source address selects.
- Write down intended traffic paths. For each affected flow, record the source address, destination address, expected rail, and expected gateway. Compare the destination with the route prefixes actually configured in the pod.
- Check gateway and fabric reachability. Verify that the selected next hop is reachable on the selected interface and that the surrounding network has a path to the destination prefix.
- Validate the return path. Confirm that replies can route back to the originating address over the expected interface. A working forward path does not prove that the return path uses the right rail.
- Verify the CNI chain and routing profile. Confirm the deployment’s destination-based or source-based profile and check that its CNI chain includes the components expected for that profile.
Do not add a route until these observations identify the intended destination prefix, next hop, interface, and return path. An isolated route command can select the wrong rail or leave asymmetric routing unresolved.

| Question | Destination-based routing | Source-based routing |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers route selection? | The destination address or prefix. | The source address or source-specific policy, according to the deployed profile. |
| When might it fit? | When destinations or prefixes determine the intended rail. | When traffic from different source interfaces must remain associated with their corresponding rails. |
| Documented CNI detail | The Launch Kit documents this as a routing choice; its exact requirements depend on the chosen profile. | The documented Launch Kit profile adds the sbr CNI plugin outside Spectrum-X. Verify that this profile applies to the deployment. |
| What still needs validation? | A valid forward path and a working return path on the selected rail. | Correct source-based selection plus a valid forward path and return path on the selected rail. |
This comparison describes the choices in NVIDIA’s Kubernetes Launch Kit configuration reference; it is not a topology-independent recommendation. In particular, the source-based profile’s sbr detail should not be generalized to other versions or deployment profiles.

What to include when asking for a concrete fix
- Pod interface names, addresses, and prefixes, mapped to their network attachments and rails.
- Relevant destination prefixes and the intended source-and-destination address pairs.
- Current route tables and policy-routing rules from the pod.
- Gateway addresses and evidence that each intended gateway is reachable through its rail.
- The selected routing profile and CNI chain, plus the relevant Kubernetes, Network Operator, Launch Kit, and CNI versions.
- Whether the failure is outbound, inbound, or return-path traffic, and the observed path versus the expected path.
With these facts, an operator can distinguish a missing destination route from a source-policy mismatch, an attachment or CNI configuration issue, or a network-fabric or return-path problem. Until then, the specific missing route is not established.
