If your AirPods are already set up with your iPhone and your MacBook is signed in to the same Apple Account, put the AirPods in your ears, open Control Center on the Mac, and select them. If they are not listed, pair them in Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.
How do I connect AirPods to a MacBook?
There are two ways to connect: select AirPods that are already associated with your Apple Account, or pair them manually over Bluetooth. Apple says AirPods set up with an iPhone should connect automatically when the Mac is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account. If they do not appear in Control Center, use manual pairing.

For the automatic route, put the AirPods in your ears, open Control Center from the menu bar, and select them. If they are absent or will not connect, follow the steps below.
Pair AirPods manually in Bluetooth settings
- Turn on Bluetooth: On the MacBook, choose Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Prepare the AirPods: Put both AirPods in their charging case and open the lid. For AirPods Max, use the headphones’ controls instead of a case.
- Put the model into pairing mode: The control depends on the model. AirPods 1, 2, or 3 and AirPods Pro 1 or 2 use the setup button on the back of the case. AirPods 4 or 5 and AirPods Pro 3 use a double-tap on the front of the case. AirPods Max use the listening-mode button. Look for the status light to flash white. Check Apple’s current model-specific directions if you are unsure: Pair AirPods with an Apple device.
- Connect on the Mac: In System Settings > Bluetooth, find the AirPods in the device list and click Connect.
- Route sound if needed: If the AirPods connect but audio still plays through the MacBook, open Control Center and select AirPods as the sound output.

AirPods won’t connect to my MacBook
Work through these checks before resetting the AirPods:
- Confirm Bluetooth is on in System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Check that both AirPods have charge and are seated in the case.
- Update macOS and relevant Apple-device software, then try pairing again.
- If the AirPods appear in Bluetooth but will not connect, put both in the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, open it, and retry pairing.
- If connection still fails, follow Apple’s reset instructions for your specific model in If your AirPods or AirPods Pro won’t connect.
Why is sound still coming from my Mac speakers?
A Bluetooth connection and the selected audio output are separate settings. Open Control Center and choose AirPods for sound output; also check that the Mac’s volume is turned up. If AirPods are not offered as an output, return to Bluetooth settings and confirm they are connected.

Set how AirPods connect automatically
Automatic switching is available for supported AirPods and Apple devices, subject to model, operating-system, and account requirements. Apple specifies that automatic switching requires the devices to use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication. On a Mac, the AirPods Bluetooth settings let you choose whether they connect automatically or only when they were last connected. For macOS 26, see Apple’s instructions: Change when your AirPods connect to your Mac.
