Yes—two turbochargers can be fitted to a four-cylinder engine, but it is a custom engineering decision, not a universal bolt-on upgrade. The layout, engine airflow, available space, power goal, and controls determine whether it can work well. One common source of confusion: a twin-scroll turbo is one turbocharger with a divided exhaust inlet, not two turbos.
What “twin turbo” means on a four-cylinder
“Twin turbo” means the system uses two turbochargers. On an inline-four, both must fit on the engine’s exhaust side, and the exhaust manifold, intake routing, oiling, heat management, wastegate control, and engine calibration all have to suit the chosen arrangement. A general overview of turbo layouts and their added complexity is available from Car Throttle.

That is different from twin-scroll. As BorgWarner’s tech team put it in a 2021 tech tip, “With the VTF design, the manifold and turbine housing are divided into two flow paths.” The separated exhaust paths direct pulses to the turbine; BorgWarner says this can improve turbine effectiveness and low- and medium-speed response. It remains one turbocharger, not two: BorgWarner’s twin-scroll explanation.

How two-turbo layouts differ
Parallel twin-turbo
In a parallel system, two turbos work at the same time, with exhaust divided between them and their compressed air routed into the engine’s intake system. The design must split the exhaust appropriately and match both compressors to the engine’s airflow. On a four-cylinder, that packaging and routing can be demanding; simply adding a second turbo does not guarantee better response or more usable power.

Sequential or series twin-turbo
In a series arrangement, the turbos operate in stages: Perkins describes two units installed in line. Such a system can be designed to pursue power density and response, including reduced lag, but it needs additional routing and control to manage the transition between stages. Perkins describes the general series concept, not a four-cylinder conversion specification: Perkins turbocharger information.
One twin-scroll turbo
A single twin-scroll turbo separates exhaust flow through a divided manifold and turbine housing. BMW’s four-cylinder examples used this one-turbo design, with separate paths serving cylinder pairs. That distinction matters when comparing upgrades: “twin-scroll” describes the turbo’s flow arrangement, not the number of turbochargers.

Is a twin-turbo setup worthwhile on a four-cylinder?
It can be engineered, but whether it is worthwhile depends on the specific engine and target. A parallel arrangement has to divide exhaust and match two compressors to the engine’s airflow; a sequential arrangement adds plumbing and control demands. Fitment is vehicle-specific. A secondary overview notes that smaller inline-four engines may have relatively limited airflow for two turbos and that the extra parts, labor, and cost can make a single turbo more straightforward; treat that as a general observation, not a rule for every engine: Car Throttle’s overview.

What four-cylinder examples actually show
BMW Group’s 2011 announcement described its 1.6 L 116i and 118i petrol engines as using a single twin-scroll turbocharger, alongside direct injection and variable valve and cam timing. For the announced 118i, BMW reported 170 hp at 4,800 rpm and 250 Nm from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. For the 2.0 L four-cylinder 520i, it reported 184 hp at 5,000 rpm and 270 Nm from 1,250 to 4,500 rpm. These are historical manufacturer figures for named models, not predicted gains from fitting a turbo system to another engine: BMW Group’s 2011 announcement.
What to compare before choosing a setup
Before committing to two turbos—or deciding that a single turbo is preferable—compare the complete system against the car’s intended use and target. Important factors include:

- It utilizes residual energy to drive rotational components, effectively lifting engine power and torque without increasing engine displacement.
- It recycles residual kinetic energy generated by engine operation, converting surplus energy into effective driving power for better overall efficiency.
- Integrated turbine and compressor layout features a compact size, fitting neatly in limited engine bay space while maintaining efficient operation.
- It adjusts operating speed dynamically according to engine working conditions, delivering responsive power output under different driving demands.
- The turbo mechanical structure is extremely durable. Long-term continuous running and heavy-load operation causes lubrication attenuation, leading to slow response and abnormal operating resistance.
- Fitment and packaging: whether the engine bay can accommodate the turbos, manifold, piping, and supporting components.
- Airflow and turbo matching: whether the chosen compressor arrangement suits the engine rather than being selected by turbo count alone.
- Response across the RPM range: how the system is intended to deliver usable power, including any sequential-stage transition.
- Heat, oiling, and exhaust routing: whether the installation can manage the added hardware and hot-side plumbing.
- Controls and calibration: how wastegates and, for a sequential layout, transitions between stages will be controlled, and how the engine will be calibrated.
- Cost and local requirements: the complete installation and calibration cost, plus the road-use and emissions rules that apply where the vehicle is registered. No generic installation cost or jurisdiction-specific legality follows from the turbo layout alone.
When a single twin-scroll turbo is the alternative
If the goal is stronger response or higher output without a two-turbo layout, a well-matched single twin-scroll turbo is a relevant alternative. BorgWarner explains the rationale: separating exhaust pulses can improve turbine effectiveness and response at low and medium engine speeds. That benefit is a design rationale, not a guarantee for every engine or installation.

APR documents a vehicle-specific Stage 3 EFR7163 single-turbo system for the 2.0T EA888 Gen 3. APR says it tested single- and twin-scroll manifold adapters and chose twin-scroll because that setup spooled several hundred RPM sooner with no measurable tradeoffs. That is APR’s comparison for this application, not a universal or independently controlled result. What details are needed for specific conversion advice?
The title alone cannot establish an exact kit, installation cost, power gain, reliability outlook, or road legality. To assess a particular car, provide its make, model, year, engine code, fuel, intended use, target output, and jurisdiction. Without those details, a universal twin-turbo recommendation or promised power result would be misleading.
