Kubeflow vs Vertex AI: What to Know Before You Self-Manage

Kubeflow can replace parts of a Vertex AI workflow, but self-managing it means operating Kubernetes and assembling the platform. Compare responsibilities, pipeline compatibility, and workload costs before choosing.

Yes—Kubeflow can be an alternative to Vertex AI when your team wants to build and operate an AI/ML platform on Kubernetes. It is not a feature-for-feature replacement: Kubeflow gives you a set of components to select and run, while Vertex AI is Google Cloud’s managed ML platform. The practical choice comes down to how much infrastructure and platform operations you want to own, how much control or portability you need, and what your workloads actually cost to run.

What does “using Kubeflow instead” mean?

Kubeflow is an ecosystem of Kubernetes-based AI/ML projects, not one uniform managed service. You can install selected subprojects or a broader packaged distribution, then run them on Kubernetes infrastructure your team operates or arranges. The Kubeflow architecture documentation describes it as building on Kubernetes for deploying, scaling, and managing AI platforms.

Vertex AI is Google’s managed ML platform. Google operates the underlying service; your team configures its workloads and cloud resources. That difference in operating model matters more than a simple feature checklist: a Kubeflow deployment gives you choices and responsibilities, whereas Vertex AI provides an integrated managed environment.

Which Kubeflow components might you need?

Kubeflow projects can be used separately, and their maturity and behavior can vary. Current installation documentation identifies several graduated projects, but that does not mean every distribution packages every component or provides identical support.

Pipelines

Kubeflow Pipelines (KFP) lets you define and orchestrate ML workflows. Its SDK can author workflows for either the open-source KFP backend or Vertex AI Pipelines, subject to SDK, component, and backend compatibility. See the Kubeflow Pipelines overview.

Interactive development and training

Notebooks supports interactive development. Trainer supports distributed training and LLM fine-tuning. What is available in practice depends on the chosen release and distribution.

Tuning and metadata

Katib provides hyperparameter tuning, while Hub handles ML metadata and artifacts. Check the documentation for your selected versions before assuming a particular workflow or integration is included.

Other projects and packaged distributions

The installation documentation also lists projects such as Spark Operator and Hub. Kubeflow’s community does not endorse or certify specific vendor-packaged distributions, so verify each distribution’s component list, maintenance, support scope, and version compatibility directly. The Kubeflow installation documentation describes installation options and packaged distributions.

What would your team have to deploy and operate?

A self-managed deployment means more than installing a web interface. Your team—or a provider you engage—must supply and run compatible Kubernetes infrastructure, select Kubeflow components, and operate the shared platform services needed for your design. The manifests repository supports whole-platform or component-level installs on environments including Kind, Minikube, Rancher, EKS, AKS, and GKE, using Kustomize and kubectl. These are documented targets, not a promise that every component works identically across every environment.

  1. Choose the platform scope. Decide whether you need individual components or a broader distribution, and identify the user, training, orchestration, storage, and metadata needs the deployment must meet.
  2. Select Kubernetes and component versions. Confirm compatibility for the chosen release and each component in the Kubeflow manifests repository before following its installation instructions. Prefer a current stable release rather than assuming an older guide remains valid.
  3. Plan infrastructure and integrations. Specify cluster ownership, identity and access controls, storage, networking, observability, accelerator capacity, and how teams will access the platform.
  4. Install and harden the selected configuration. Use the manifests’ Kustomize and kubectl workflow for the applicable environment. The repository warns that its example installation uses default credentials; change them before any production deployment.
  5. Define ongoing operations. Assign responsibility for upgrades, security fixes, capacity, incident response, backups, and component lifecycle. These are part of the self-managed choice, not optional add-ons.

The exact commands and prerequisites depend on the selected release and target cluster, so use that release’s instructions rather than copying a generic command sequence across environments.

A Google Cloud deployment example is not the same as a managed product

An older Google Cloud Kubeflow deployment blueprint describes a multi-user setup on GKE with a separate management cluster and a Kubeflow cluster. It discusses integrations including IAP, Cloud Logging, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, and IAM, along with autoscaling and GPU/TPU-capable nodes. Its deployment overview can help illustrate the architecture and operational responsibilities, but it is an older documentation branch. Do not treat it by itself as evidence of a current turnkey Google offering or current deployment guidance.

How do Kubeflow and Vertex AI differ in practice?

Decision area Kubeflow Vertex AI What to decide
Infrastructure ownership Your team operates Kubernetes and assembles the selected platform components, unless a distribution or service provider takes on some of that work. Google provides managed platform services; your team configures workloads and cloud resources. Who owns upgrades, security, observability, capacity, and incident response?
Component choice and control Select individual projects or a broader platform configuration; the Kubernetes basis supports deployments across different environments. Use an integrated ML platform and Google Cloud services. Which customizations and portability requirements matter, and what support boundaries apply?
Pipeline execution Run workflows on the open-source KFP backend or another compatible backend. Run KFP SDK or TFX workflows with serverless Vertex AI Pipelines. Check SDK and component compatibility, plus data and artifact movement.
Cost model Estimate cluster, storage, networking, accelerators, and operating labor for your design. Estimate service usage and resources, including pipeline execution and any additional service fees. Compare workload-specific estimates using the same region, utilization, hardware, and labor assumptions.
Support and lifecycle Support depends on the community project or separately maintained distribution and any associated service agreement. Support and lifecycle depend on Google Cloud’s service documentation and applicable terms. Confirm the release, support contract, regional availability, and end-of-support dates.

Can Kubeflow Pipelines bridge the two?

It can provide a useful path between environments: the KFP SDK can author pipelines for the open-source backend or Vertex AI Pipelines. That does not guarantee a drop-in migration. Confirm the versions of the SDK and backend, whether each component is supported, and how the workflow handles data, artifacts, identities, and cloud-specific services. Google documents Vertex AI Pipelines as a serverless option for KFP SDK and TFX workflows in its Vertex AI documentation.

This distinction also lets teams consider using Vertex AI Pipelines without operating the full Kubeflow platform. A shared pipeline authoring model can reduce one kind of lock-in, but it does not make every platform service, integration, or workload portable.

How should you compare costs?

Google’s pricing information lists a starting charge of $0.03 per Vertex AI Pipelines run; this is an execution starting price, not an estimate for a complete workload. Resource usage and additional service fees also apply, and the live price should be checked for the intended region and configuration. See the Google Cloud pricing information.

For Kubeflow, include the Kubernetes and supporting infrastructure, storage, networking, accelerators, and staff time required to operate the platform. For Vertex AI, include pipeline execution, compute and other resources, and applicable service charges. Build both estimates around the same workload, region, usage pattern, accelerator needs, and operating assumptions. The available information does not establish a universal cheaper option or a like-for-like performance winner.

When is Kubeflow the better fit?

  • Consider Kubeflow if Kubernetes-based control, component selection, or deployment across varied infrastructure is important—and you have the capacity or support arrangement to operate the platform.
  • Consider Vertex AI if you want Google to manage the ML platform services and your requirements fit its service model, while accepting Google Cloud’s service and resource pricing.
  • Consider a split approach if KFP workflow authoring is useful across environments, but some workflows can run on Vertex AI Pipelines rather than on a full self-managed Kubeflow installation.

Before committing, test the components and integrations your actual workflows require, establish who is accountable for platform operations, and compare workload-specific costs. The choice is about control and operating responsibility as much as features.
