To reset Samsung face recognition, remove the saved face data and register your face again: open Settings > Security and privacy > Biometrics > Face recognition, unlock with your PIN, pattern, or password, and tap Remove face data. Menu names can differ by Galaxy model and software version; if you do not see Biometrics, look for Screen lock and biometrics.
Before you reset face recognition
- Make sure you know the device’s existing PIN, pattern, or password. Samsung requires a secure screen lock to set up face recognition, and you may need to authenticate before deleting the saved face.
- Have enough light to complete the face scan, and hold the phone steadily so your face can be centered in the on-screen guide.
Remove the saved face and register again
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy > Biometrics > Face recognition. On some devices, the route is Security and privacy > Screen lock and biometrics > Face recognition. Samsung says screens and settings can vary by model, software version, and wireless provider. Samsung’s face-recognition setup and removal instructions describe the available steps.
- Enter your current screen-lock credential when prompted.
- Tap Remove face data and confirm. This deletes the face data currently stored on the device.
- Tap Register face and follow the capture instructions. Keep the phone steady, face the camera, and position your face in the guide.
Until you register a face again, face-recognition features that depend on the saved data will not work. Your PIN, pattern, or password remains the fallback screen unlock.

If Galaxy face recognition still does not work
Check the camera and scanning conditions
- Wipe the front camera gently with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Try again in a well-lit place and avoid strong light behind you.
- Remove a mask or sunglasses while scanning, and check whether a case or screen protector is obstructing the camera.
Glasses, hats, makeup, bangs, facial hair, and other changes in appearance may affect recognition. If your appearance regularly changes or is covered, Samsung says adding an alternative appearance may help. See Samsung’s instructions for face recognition for setup options.
Check whether face unlock is enabled
Open the Face recognition settings and check that the Face unlock switch is on. If biometric unlocking is disabled, Lockdown mode may be active; Samsung says this mode disables biometric unlocking. On a company-managed device, an administrator may also restrict biometrics. Contact your organization’s IT administrator if you cannot change the setting. What a face-recognition reset does—and does not do
Removing face data resets the stored biometric, not the phone’s screen lock. You must register your face again to use face recognition; the PIN, pattern, or password is still needed as the fallback unlock method.
Samsung cautions that face recognition is less secure than a pattern, PIN, iris, or fingerprint, and that a similar-looking person, such as a twin, may unlock the device. Treat face unlock as a convenience rather than the strongest authentication option. Samsung also says the phone may require the screen-lock credential after a restart, after four hours without use, or at least once every 24 hours. Those prompts are security checks and do not by themselves mean your face data has been erased.
