Yes, you can try Windows Server 2025 for free, but only as a time-limited evaluation—not as an unlimited free production edition. Microsoft offers a 180-day evaluation in ISO and VHD formats, plus an Azure image option. The evaluation must be activated online within its first 10 days to avoid automatic shutdown, and it expires after 180 days. Microsoft’s Evaluation Center provides the current download options and terms.
Is there a free version of Windows Server?
Microsoft makes a Windows Server 2025 evaluation available at no cost for 180 days. It is intended for evaluation; the offer does not establish a permanently free edition for production use. Microsoft says the evaluation deactivates when the trial ends, with no additional end-of-trial charge. Its trial page describes terms as accurate as of November 2024 and subject to change, so check the current terms before installing. Microsoft’s Windows Server 2025 trial page

Microsoft also says an evaluation installation can be converted to retail after the evaluation. That does not make the evaluation a production license: a production deployment needs the appropriate commercial licensing.
How long does the evaluation last, and what happens when it expires?
The stated evaluation period is 180 days. Microsoft requires online activation within the first 10 days to avoid automatic shutdown. When the evaluation expires, it deactivates; plan to convert it to a properly licensed retail installation or replace it before relying on the server for ongoing work. Microsoft’s Evaluation Center

Which free evaluation format should you choose?
| Option | What you get | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| ISO download | Windows Server 2025 evaluation installer covering Standard and Datacenter; installation choices include Server Core or Server with Desktop Experience. | 180-day evaluation; activate online within the first 10 days. |
| VHD download | A virtual hard disk evaluation image; the Evaluation Center lists the VHD in English. | 180-day evaluation; activate online within the first 10 days. |
| Azure evaluation image | A prebuilt Windows Server image to try in Azure. | Azure account eligibility, compute charges, and account-offer limits are separate from the Windows Server evaluation. |
These format and activation details are from the Windows Server 2025 Evaluation Center. Choose an ISO when you want to install from media, a VHD when you need a virtual disk image, or an Azure image when you want to try the server in Microsoft’s cloud. For a local lab, decide whether you need Server Core’s command-line-oriented installation or the graphical Desktop Experience before setup.
Can you use Windows Server for free in production?
The evaluation terms do not provide an unlimited free production license. Microsoft lists Windows Server 2025 Standard and Datacenter as its principal editions. Both use core-based licensing and require a Windows Server CAL for each user or device accessing a server. Microsoft describes Standard as suited to physical or minimally virtualized environments, and Datacenter as suited to highly virtualized datacenters and cloud environments. Pricing varies; Microsoft directs buyers to a reseller or representative for a quote rather than publishing one fixed price. Microsoft Windows Server 2025 licensing and pricing

When planning a production installation, account for the server’s core count, virtualization needs, and the users or devices that will access it. Confirm the applicable edition, license terms, and CAL requirements with Microsoft or a reseller for your location before deployment.

No. An Azure free-account offer is an account and cloud-service promotion, not a permanent Windows Server license. Microsoft says eligible new Azure customers receive a $200 credit for up to 30 days; continued use beyond the offer requires moving to pay-as-you-go. The server image, Azure compute, and the account offer have separate terms, so check the current offer and estimate cloud charges before launching a VM. Azure account purchase options

Can existing licenses or Azure Arc reduce the cost?
Azure Hybrid Benefit
Organizations with qualifying Windows Server Standard or Datacenter core licenses and active Software Assurance, or a qualifying subscription, may be able to apply Azure Hybrid Benefit to eligible Windows Server VMs. It reduces the Windows Server license component of Azure VM costs; the base compute rate remains payable. It is a licensing benefit for eligible customers, not a free general-purpose server offer. Microsoft Learn: Azure Hybrid Benefit for Windows Server
Windows Server pay-as-you-go with Azure Arc
Microsoft describes Windows Server 2025 pay-as-you-go through Azure Arc as subscription licensing billed through an Azure subscription. It includes a seven-day trial, not a perpetual free tier. Billing can continue if pay-as-you-go is left enabled when a device is shut down or deprovisioned, so disable the option before stopping or removing the server if you want to avoid continued charges.
