The best Kodi remote is the one your Kodi device supports: start with the handset that came with it, then consider your TV remote through HDMI-CEC, a USB RF remote, or Kodi’s free phone apps. Kodi’s documentation does not establish a tested ranking of seven current remote models, so these seven choices are control methods and setup paths—not a product leaderboard.
Check your Kodi device before choosing a remote
A remote must work with the hardware running Kodi before Kodi can respond to it. As Kodi puts it, “If your remote control does not work with your hardware, it will not work with Kodi.” Check the exact device and operating system, and try its included remote before buying anything. Kodi notes that many purchased devices, including Raspberry Pi and Android devices, ship with remotes that work out of the box. Kodi’s remote-control guidance explains the compatibility limitation.

Seven ways to control Kodi
1. Use the remote bundled with your Kodi device
This is the simplest starting point if Kodi runs on a supported streamer or other device supplied with a working handset. Confirm that the remote is paired or connected to the same device running Kodi; having a Kodi app on a separate device does not make its bundled remote control Kodi automatically. Kodi describes included remotes as working out of the box on many devices, not all devices. See Kodi’s device-remote notes.
2. Try your TV remote through HDMI-CEC
HDMI-CEC can let a television’s standard remote send navigation and playback commands to Kodi over a compatible HDMI setup. Kodi uses libCEC for this feature. It depends on compatible equipment and a functioning HDMI-CEC path, which can include the TV, receiver, and Kodi host; manufacturer-specific behavior may also affect setup. Kodi’s CEC guide describes the feature and its configuration.

3. Add a USB-to-CEC adapter to an HTPC
If a computer running Kodi cannot use CEC directly, a USB-to-CEC adapter is one possible bridge between the computer and HDMI equipment. The Pulse-Eight USB-CEC Adapter is documented for relaying TV-remote commands to Kodi through HDMI. Check current operating-system, driver, and system compatibility before buying: the adapter is not a guarantee that every host or HDMI chain will work. Kodi’s CEC documentation and the Pulse-Eight adapter guide outline the approach.
4. Choose a 2.4 GHz RF remote with a USB receiver
An RF handset with a small USB dongle is a dedicated wireless option for an HTPC. The receiver must be supported by the Kodi host. Some remotes send keystrokes that Kodi can use directly; if buttons do not trigger the actions you want, Kodi’s keymaps can map received keystrokes to Kodi actions. Verify receiver support and button behavior for the specific remote before purchase. Kodi’s RF remote guide documents the USB dongle, 2.4 GHz radio, and mapping process.
5. Use Kore on an Android phone or tablet
Kore Official Remote for Kodi is Kodi’s official Android remote app. It turns a compatible Android device into a network remote rather than a dedicated handset. Kodi lists Kore among its free, open-source remote apps; setup requires the phone and Kodi host to be configured for remote control and network access. Start with Kodi’s smartphone and tablet remote instructions.

6. Use Official Kodi Remote on an iPhone or iPad
For Apple mobile devices, Kodi identifies Official Kodi Remote as its official iOS remote app. Like Kore, it is a phone-based alternative, not a physical remote. Check the current App Store listing and follow Kodi’s mobile remote setup guidance to configure the Kodi host and network connection.
7. Use a game controller or another configurable input
If you already have a supported game controller or another input device, Kodi can accept configurable input beyond traditional remotes. Whether it is practical depends on the host, available mappings, and whether the device provides the navigation and playback controls you need. Kodi documents game-controller and CEC device options in its System: Input settings guide.

| Method | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Included device remote | A Kodi device that already came with a handset | Exact device and operating system; whether the remote controls the device running Kodi |
| TV remote via HDMI-CEC | A compatible TV-to-Kodi HDMI setup | CEC support and settings across the HDMI chain; device-specific behavior |
| USB-to-CEC adapter | An HTPC that needs a CEC adapter | Host operating system, driver and software support, HDMI path, and current product compatibility |
| 2.4 GHz RF remote | An HTPC user who wants a dedicated wireless handset | USB receiver support and whether button mapping is needed |
| Kore | An Android phone or tablet user | Android availability, Kodi remote settings, and network access |
| Official Kodi Remote | An iPhone or iPad user | Current App Store availability, Kodi remote settings, and network access |
| Game controller or configurable input | Someone who already owns a compatible input device | Host support and mappings for the required navigation and playback actions |
The cited Kodi and manufacturer documentation describes control methods and setup, not side-by-side model testing. It does not establish comparable figures for range, latency, battery life, comfort, or price. Treat those as model-specific questions to check before choosing a physical remote.

Can you use your TV remote with Kodi?
Yes, if the TV, Kodi device, and any equipment between them support and are configured for HDMI-CEC. Kodi’s CEC implementation uses libCEC. On some computers, a USB-to-CEC adapter may provide the connection; compatibility still depends on the host and HDMI setup. See Kodi’s CEC guide for the relevant configuration details.
Will a particular remote work with your Kodi box?
Confirm that the remote’s connection method is supported by the specific hardware and operating system running Kodi. An included handset, CEC remote, RF dongle, phone app, and game controller all rely on different host capabilities. If a supported RF remote sends keystrokes but its buttons do not perform the intended actions, keymaps may let you assign those keystrokes. Kodi cannot make unsupported remote hardware compatible through settings alone. Kodi’s remote compatibility notes and its RF setup guide cover these limits.
