200GbE Runs at 200 Gb/s, but PHY Determines the Link

200GbE means Ethernet operating at a 200 Gb/s MAC data rate. The PHY—not the name alone—determines the cable, optics, connector, and supported reach.

200 Gigabit Ethernet (200GbE) is Ethernet with a 200 Gb/s data rate at the MAC—the part of Ethernet that handles frames. It does not specify one universal cable, optical module, connector, or transmission distance: those depend on the physical-layer technology, or PHY, used by the link.

What does 200GbE mean?

The “200 gigabit” in 200GbE refers to a 200 Gb/s MAC data rate. The Ethernet MAC handles Ethernet frames, while the PHY carries those frames over a particular medium. IEEE 802.3bs-2017 defines MAC parameters, PHY specifications, and management parameters for transferring IEEE 802.3-format frames at 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s. Its project objectives specify full-duplex operation and preservation of the Ethernet frame format. IEEE 802.3bs-2017 IEEE 802.3bs project objectives

So 200GbE is a speed designation, not a description of the connector or cable. Two links can both be 200GbE while using different PHYs and media.

Which standards define 200GbE?

  • IEEE 802.3bs-2017: Defines 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s Ethernet MAC, PHY, and management parameters. The IEEE task force records IEEE-SA Standards Board approval on December 6, 2017. IEEE 802.3bs-2017
  • IEEE 802.3-2022: Consolidates the Ethernet standard, describing a common MAC specification alongside speed-specific interfaces and PHYs. It covers media including coaxial cable, twisted pair, fiber, and electrical backplanes, and Ethernet operation through 400 Gb/s. IEEE 802.3-2022
  • IEEE 802.3ck-2022: Adds electrical-interface PHY specifications for 100, 200, and 400 Gb/s based on 100 Gb/s signaling. It is one part of the interface landscape, not a specification used by every 200GbE link. IEEE 802.3ck-2022

What cable and distance does 200GbE use?

There is no single answer for every 200GbE connection. The PHY determines the supported medium and reach; the port, optics, connector, and cable must all match that implementation.

GLOTRENDS 2-Port 200Gb QSFP56 NIC, ConnectX-6 VPI, PCIe 4.0 x16, RoCE
  • 200GbE PER PORT: ConnectX-6 (MCX613106A-VDAT) drives two QSFP56 ports with 200G/100G/50G/40G/25G/10G/1G auto-negotiation — 400Gb/s aggregate on a PCIe 4.0 x16 interface.
  • PCIe 4.0 HOST BANDWIDTH: Gen4 x16 doubles host throughput versus Gen3, so both ports sustain line-rate 200G with headroom — no slot bottleneck for AI and storage fabrics.
  • 197 MPPS + DPDK: Hardware packet processing at up to 197 million packets/sec for telecom-grade NFV, SDN gateways and high-traffic core nodes.
  • RDMA & VIRTUALIZATION: Native RoCE for NVMe-oF and AI data pipelines; SR-IOV up to 127 VFs per port (254 per card) plus VXLAN/GENEVE/NVGRE overlay offload.
  • CARRIER-GRADE FEATURES: PXE/UEFI boot, NC-SI management, DCB, jumbo frames; Linux, Windows and VMware support for stable core-network deployment.

IEEE 802.3bs project objectives included 200 Gb/s operation over single-mode fiber for at least 2 km and at least 10 km, and over four-lane parallel single-mode fiber for at least 500 m. These are objectives for supported PHY specifications—not a guarantee that every 200GbE port or product supports all those distances. IEEE 802.3bs project objectives

Single-mode fiber is therefore one relevant cable category for compatible optical 200GbE links, but selecting fiber by itself does not establish compatibility. Check the PHY specifications and requirements at both ends, including the required optics, connector, medium, and reach.

How to check whether two 200GbE ports will work together

  1. Identify the PHY standard supported by each port. A shared “200GbE” label alone does not confirm that their physical interfaces match.
  2. Confirm the medium and interface required by that PHY, such as a specified optical fiber implementation or an electrical interface.
  3. Match the reach and physical components: verify the distance, optics, connector, and cable requirements for the exact implementation.
  4. Check endpoint compatibility in the equipment specifications. Confirm that the two ports support interoperable implementations rather than assuming any 200GbE cable or optic will work.

The IEEE standards establish the broad MAC and PHY framework, but a specific product’s supported combinations and compatibility must be confirmed in its vendor documentation.

How fast is 200GbE?

Its specified MAC data rate is 200 Gb/s. That is the Ethernet rate named by the standard, not a guarantee of 200 Gb/s of application-level file-transfer throughput: actual data transfer includes protocol and system behavior beyond the MAC rate.
