Computerized Branch Exchange: How to Identify a PBX and What to Check

A computerized branch exchange generally refers to a private branch exchange (PBX), the system organizations use to connect internal phones and route outside calls.

A computerized branch exchange is best understood as a private branch exchange (PBX): an organization’s private telephone switching system. It connects internal phones or other telephone stations and can also connect them to the public telephone network. “Computerized branch exchange” is descriptive wording, not a separate standardized system category established by the sources cited here.

What does computerized branch exchange mean?

A PBX is a telephone switch used by a business or other organization to manage calls among its internal stations and, where configured, calls to and from the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The Federal Communications Commission defines it as a centralized switching system at a business or organization site that provides internal station-to-station dialing and access to the public switched network (FCC glossary, FCC 08-265A).

In practical terms, the PBX handles connections within the organization and routes calls between its internal telephones and outside telephone lines or networks. The FCC definition is specific to a U.S. regulatory glossary; the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission likewise describes a PBX as a private voice-capable switching facility at an end-user organization’s premises, connecting on-site terminals and potentially other communications networks (CRTC report).

Is “computerized branch exchange” different from PBX or PABX?

The sources define PBX and PABX, but do not establish “computerized branch exchange” as a distinct standardized term. Cisco’s CTI glossary identifies PABX as a synonym for PBX (Cisco CTI glossary). Unless documentation for a particular system specifies otherwise, treat PBX and PABX as equivalent names rather than separate technologies.

“Computerized” may describe software control, but it does not identify one particular design. PBXs can use digital or analog switching, and system architectures vary. Avaya’s glossary describes a communications server as a software-controlled processor complex that interprets dialing inputs and makes connections, noting that such a system was previously called a switch or PBX (Avaya glossary). That describes one software-controlled approach, not a requirement that every PBX use the same hardware or software.

How a PBX relates to the public telephone network

A PBX belongs to the customer organization’s telephone system; it is not the same thing as a carrier’s public switching office. It can connect the organization’s internal stations to carrier lines or other networks, while a carrier’s switching infrastructure serves the broader public network. Cisco’s ISDN glossary compares a PBX with a smaller, customer-premises counterpart to a telephone company’s central switching office (Cisco ISDN glossary).

What to check when evaluating a particular PBX

The general definitions explain a PBX’s role, not the capacity or compatibility of a specific system. For a real installation, verify the system’s documentation against the organization’s requirements, including:

  • Whether the switching design is analog, digital, software-controlled, or a combination.
  • The number and type of internal stations the system supports.
  • Which outside lines or network connections are required.
  • Whether existing telephones and carrier interfaces are compatible.

These details vary by system; the term “computerized branch exchange” alone does not establish them.
