Download the Windows or Linux package that matches your operating system, install the TWAIN driver first for ordinary scanning software, and add the ISIS driver only when an ISIS-enabled application requires it. Firmware is a separate update and should be installed only with the scanner powered on, connected and showing no errors.
What you need to update
The S2040 uses two different kinds of software. A host driver lets Windows or a supported Linux system communicate with the scanner. Firmware runs inside the scanner itself. Installing one does not automatically install the other, so treat them as separate maintenance tasks.

|---|---|---|
| TWAIN driver | Normal scanning applications that use the TWAIN interface | Install this before ISIS |
| KODAK S2000 ISIS driver | An application specifically built for ISIS | Install only when the host application supports or requires ISIS; TWAIN must already be installed |
| Firmware | Software inside the S2040 scanner | Keep the scanner powered, connected and free of displayed errors while the installer runs |
| Smart Touch | Kodak Alaris’ scanner workflow software listed for the S2040 | Use the package and release notes for your operating system |
| Linux packages and release notes | Supported Linux distributions and version-specific instructions | Use the current operating-system selector; package availability can change |
Use the official Kodak Alaris S2040 support page as the download source. It provides the TWAIN driver, KODAK S2000 ISIS driver, firmware, Linux packages, Smart Touch and release notes in one model-specific location. Avoid a generic driver site: a package for a different S2000-series model or operating system may not be appropriate for an S2040.

Before downloading, confirm the edition actually running on the target computer. In Windows, open Settings > System > About and check System type. Select the Windows 11 64-bit package for a 64-bit Windows 11 installation; do not substitute a Windows 10 32-bit package. For Windows Server or Linux, select the exact server release or distribution shown on the Kodak Alaris page and read the associated release notes.
Prepare the scanner and computer
- Use the S2040 support page for every download and read the release notes for the package you selected.
- Save documents and close scanning applications, Smart Touch and any capture service that might be using the scanner.
- Turn the S2040 on and connect it to the computer before installing or updating firmware.
- Check the scanner’s display. Resolve any displayed error first; the firmware procedure specifically requires an error-free scanner.
- Use an account permitted to install software. If Windows requests administrator approval, review the prompt and allow the installer only when it is the Kodak Alaris package you intentionally downloaded.
- For a firmware update, avoid powering off, unplugging or putting the computer to sleep until the installer reports completion.
Install or update the TWAIN driver in Windows
- Open the official Kodak Alaris S2040 support page and choose the latest TWAIN driver listed for your Windows edition and architecture.
- Download the installer to a local folder. Keep the downloaded file until you have completed a test scan, so you can identify exactly which package was installed.
- Close applications that scan documents. If another program has an active connection to the S2040, the installer or the first test scan may not be able to claim the device.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow its on-screen steps. Accept a restart if the installer requests one; a restart allows Windows services and the driver registration to load cleanly.
- Reconnect or power-cycle the scanner only when the installer has finished or specifically instructs you to do so. Do not start a second driver installer while the first one is running.
- Open the scanning application you normally use and select the S2040 from its scanner or source list. Choose its TWAIN source when the application offers more than one interface.
- Make a small test scan, inspect the image and confirm that the application can feed more than one page if that is part of your normal workflow.
If the application sees the scanner after installation, no separate ISIS installation is needed for that TWAIN workflow. The S2040’s current product specification gives a recommended daily volume of up to 5,000 pages per day; that figure is Kodak Alaris’ operating guidance, not a promise that every application or document type will perform identically.

Add the ISIS driver only for an ISIS application
ISIS is not a replacement for the basic TWAIN installation when an application requires both. Kodak Alaris’ S2040 page tells customers to install the TWAIN driver before installing the KODAK S2000 ISIS driver.
- Install and verify TWAIN first using the procedure above.
- Confirm in the documentation or setup screen of the capture program that it supports ISIS. If it offers only TWAIN, installing ISIS will not add a usable source.
- Return to the S2040 support page, choose the KODAK S2000 ISIS package for the matching Windows environment, and download it.
- Close the capture program, run the ISIS installer and follow its prompts. Restart Windows if requested.
- Reopen the capture program and select the ISIS source. Keep TWAIN selected in applications that use TWAIN; the interface choice belongs to the application, not to the scanner’s physical connection.
Update the S2040 firmware separately
What the documented release contains
Kodak Alaris’ release note identifies Firmware Version 230802, dated December 11, 2023. That note recommends S2000 Driver Installation Disk Version 8.2. Its listed fixes include error ID 0039 during normal operation, saving the date and time of the first host connection, A3 flatbed pixel sizing that affected OCR, and automatic scanner restart after firmware updates.

Those fixes do not mean every S2040 must be updated immediately or that a firmware update replaces a host driver. Use the release note to decide whether a listed correction relates to your symptom, then check the current support page for any newer package or qualification.
Firmware installation steps
- On the S2040 support page, locate the firmware download and choose the installer that matches the computer’s operating system. The S2000 User Guide’s instruction is: “Download the firmware installer that matches your computer’s Operating System.”
- Check the scanner display and clear any error. Ensure the scanner is turned on and connected or otherwise available to the computer.
- Close scanning software and leave the scanner idle. Do not begin a scan while the firmware installer is communicating with the device.
- Run the firmware installer and follow each step shown by the utility. Do not disconnect USB, remove power or force a restart while firmware is being written.
- Wait for the installer to report completion. The documented firmware includes an automatic scanner restart after updates; allow that restart to finish rather than interrupting it.
- After Windows or Linux has returned to the desktop, open your scanning application and make a test scan. If the release note’s OCR or A3 flatbed correction was relevant, test that particular workflow as well.
The firmware package and the TWAIN or ISIS packages can have different release dates. Record the firmware version and driver package version shown by the installer or release documentation so support staff can reproduce your configuration.

Linux installation and package selection
Kodak Alaris lists Linux packages for specific distributions and versions rather than for “Linux” as one universal target. On the support page, select the distribution and release that match the computer, download the corresponding package and follow its included installation instructions. Ubuntu 16.04, 18.04 and 20.04, Debian 10.8, OpenSUSE variants, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, Pardus, Neokylin and Kylin are among the environments listed by Kodak Alaris.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not install a package for a nearby but different distribution merely because its filename looks similar. If your release is not shown, check the current selector and release notes for availability before proceeding. After installation, use the Linux scanning application’s device list to select the S2040 and perform a short test scan. Firmware still remains a separate operation: use the matching firmware installer and the same power, connection and error-free requirements.

Fixes when the S2040 is not detected
The installer cannot find the scanner
- Confirm the scanner is powered on and that its display is not showing an error.
- Close all scanning applications, disconnect and reconnect the scanner, then reopen the installer or scanning application.
- Verify that you downloaded a package for the computer’s exact operating system and architecture.
- Install TWAIN before ISIS. An ISIS-only installation does not satisfy Kodak Alaris’ stated installation order.
- Restart the computer after the driver installation, especially if Windows requested it, and test again.
The application lists no usable source
Check which interface the application expects. Select TWAIN in a TWAIN application and ISIS in an ISIS-enabled application. Installing both drivers does not make a TWAIN-only program use ISIS, and installing ISIS is unnecessary when the program already scans successfully through TWAIN.
A firmware update stops or fails
Do not repeatedly disconnect the scanner while an update is in progress. First allow the utility to finish or display a failure message. Then confirm the scanner is powered, connected, available to the computer and free of displayed errors; close other scanner software and rerun the firmware installer that matches the operating system. If the same failure returns, keep the installer’s message, the firmware version, operating-system edition and the scanner’s displayed status available when contacting Kodak Alaris support.
Scanning works but a known problem remains
Compare the symptom with the December 11, 2023 firmware note: error ID 0039, first-host-connection date and time, A3 flatbed pixel sizing affecting OCR, and restart behavior after firmware updates are specifically listed there. If the symptom does not match a documented fix, check the current release notes before changing packages again.
Useful operating limits and maintenance context
Kodak Alaris’ current product specification lists running power at less than 36 watts and a recommended daily volume of up to 5,000 pages. These figures help with workstation planning and workload expectations, but they do not change which driver or firmware package you should install. Compatibility is determined by the operating-system selector and release notes on the S2040 support page.
Quick Recap
For an optional shortcut, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a 2-day free trial with no credit card before subscription; results vary, and it may not resolve every scanner problem.
