Download the HP Color LaserJet 4650dn driver from HP’s model-specific Software and Drivers page. Select your exact operating system and version, download the package HP offers, and open it to run the installer. The page currently shows selections for Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, 11 and Linux, but a listed operating system does not by itself guarantee that a current package is available. If your version is not listed, treat official support as unconfirmed rather than installing a random third-party driver.
Identify the printer before downloading
Confirm that the label says HP Color LaserJet 4650dn. The OfficeJet 4650 is a different inkjet model and requires different software. The “dn” suffix also matters: it identifies the network-capable duplex model in the Color LaserJet 4650 series. If Windows shows only a generic name, check the printer’s front panel, rear label or an existing configuration page before choosing a download.

HP lists the 4650dn as discontinued. That means setup is primarily a maintenance task for an existing printer, not a current-product installation flow. HP’s shop information identifies product number Q3670A#ABA and directs owners toward related toner or ink supplies. Verify the exact 4650dn compatibility, region, stock and price whenever you buy consumables.

Download the driver from HP’s official page
- Open the model page. Go to HP’s HP Color LaserJet 4650 series Software and Drivers page. Do not use a search result for OfficeJet 4650 or a similarly named LaserJet.
- Let HP detect the system or select it manually. Choose the computer’s operating system and the precise version or edition shown by HP. On Windows, check whether the page distinguishes 32-bit and 64-bit packages and select the architecture that matches your installation.
- Review every package listed. HP may show a basic driver, a fuller software bundle, or more than one driver language. Read the package description, release information and supported operating systems before downloading.
- Download the offered file. Save it somewhere easy to find, such as Downloads. The file name and extension vary by operating system; use the file HP provides for the selection you made.
- Run the installer. Open the downloaded file, approve the Windows security prompt if it identifies HP as the publisher, accept the license terms, and follow the connection and printer-selection prompts.
- Print a test page. After setup completes, open the printer’s properties and print a Windows test page. A successful page confirms that Windows can send a job through the selected driver.
Download only from HP’s page or from a package already supplied by your organization’s administrator. A driver site that offers a “universal” or modified installer may not match the 4650dn and can add software you did not request.

Choose the right package
The correct choice depends on the operating system, connection and features you need. HP’s selector is the source of truth for what is actually available on the day you download.

Do not assume that an older PCL or PostScript file is interchangeable with every modern Windows release. The package must first be listed for your selected operating system.
Install over USB
- Disconnect the USB cable if the installer instructs you to wait. Some packages detect the printer only after the software is installed.
- Start the HP package and select USB when prompted.
- Reconnect the cable directly to the computer when the installer asks. Avoid an unpowered hub while troubleshooting detection.
- Allow Windows to finish registering the printer, then print a test page.
If the installer never detects the printer, try another USB port and check whether Windows makes its connection sound. A cable that powers the printer but has damaged data wires can produce a partial connection. Remove a duplicate or paused 4650dn entry from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 10), restart the computer, and run the HP installer again.

Install over a network
- Connect the 4650dn to the same wired network as the computer and confirm that the printer is powered on.
- Run the HP package and choose the network or Ethernet connection type.
- Let the installer search for the printer. If it offers several devices, compare the displayed model and network address with the printer’s configuration information.
- If discovery fails, choose the installer’s manual or address-based option, if one is offered, and enter the printer’s current network address.
- Finish the installation and print a test page. If several queues exist, set the newly installed queue as the default only after confirming that it points to the 4650dn.
A network driver can install successfully while the printer remains unreachable. In that case, verify that the computer and printer are on the same network segment, that the printer’s address has not changed, and that a security policy is not blocking printer traffic. Your network administrator may need to reserve an address or provide the correct print server queue.
Update an existing 4650dn installation in Windows
Use Windows Update first
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install any printer or optional driver update that Windows offers.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
- Select the 4650dn, open its management or printer properties, and print a test page.
Windows Update may not offer a newer package for a discontinued printer. Not seeing an update does not mean the printer is broken; it means Windows has no applicable update in that channel.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how Windows identifies the device.
- Right-click the 4650dn-related entry and choose Update driver.
- Select the option to search automatically, or choose the downloaded HP package if you need to point Windows to a specific folder.
- Restart Windows if requested and print a test page.
Device Manager may update a component without replacing the complete HP software bundle. If features are missing after an automatic update, install the complete package listed for your operating system from HP’s model page.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility
HP’s model-specific page currently exposes Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its operating-system selector, along with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8 and Linux. This is useful evidence that HP has categorized the model for those selections, but the page still needs to be checked for the exact edition and available download. A selector entry is not a promise that every package works on every build.

If HP offers no file after you choose your system, do not substitute a package for another Windows release. You can try Windows Update or Device Manager, but document that official model-specific support was not confirmed for your exact system.
Linux support also depends on the distribution and version shown by HP. Follow the instructions attached to the Linux package rather than applying Windows installation steps.

What the original driver documentation means
The official 4650-series user guide documents HP LaserJet PCL 6 and PCL 5c drivers for Windows. It also documents PostScript drivers for Windows XP and Windows 2000, plus Automatic Configuration and Update Now features in supported bidirectional environments. These are capabilities from the printer’s original software ecosystem. They explain why an older installation may display those options, but they do not establish current compatibility with every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build.
If a legacy application specifically requires PostScript or PCL behavior, select that language only when HP offers a matching package for your operating system. Otherwise, use the package HP recommends for the selected system and test the output from the applications that matter to you.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
The page shows no driver for my operating system
Recheck the model and operating-system selection, including 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. If the operating system is absent or no package appears after selection, official support is unconfirmed. Windows Update and Device Manager are reasonable fallback checks, but do not describe the printer as fully supported without a compatible package.

The installer says the printer is not found
- For USB, reconnect directly to the computer, try another port and remove duplicate printer entries before rerunning setup.
- For a network installation, confirm power, cabling, network membership and the printer’s current address.
- Temporarily close other printer-installation windows so two installers do not compete for the same queue.
- Restart Windows and the printer, then run the HP package again.
Jobs remain queued or print to the wrong device
Open the printer list and confirm that the intended 4650dn queue is selected. Cancel stale jobs, check that the queue is not paused or set to offline, and print a test page. If multiple queues use similar names, rename the confirmed queue with its connection type or address so applications do not select an obsolete entry.
Printing works but advanced options are missing
Windows may have installed a basic or generic driver. Return to HP’s page, select the exact operating system, and compare the available basic and full packages. Install the fuller package when you need configuration or management features. Do not expect historical Automatic Configuration or Update Now controls to appear on every modern connection.
The update made printing worse
Record the previous driver name and version before changing anything else. In the printer’s driver properties, use Windows’ rollback option when it is available, or remove the problematic queue and reinstall the last package that HP lists for your operating system. Test from more than one application before concluding that the printer hardware is at fault.

Maintenance considerations for a discontinued printer
Because HP marks the Color LaserJet 4650dn as discontinued, keep a copy of the working installer and note the operating-system version and connection type used. This makes a later Windows reinstall easier if the public download selection changes. Keep the printer’s configuration page and network address with your records, especially in an office where a DHCP change can break a previously working queue.
For supplies, search specifically for an HP Color LaserJet 4650dn toner cartridge and verify compatibility before ordering. Cartridge SKU, regional availability, retailer terms and price can change, so check them at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old listing.
