Spoilers for all three acts: Knee Deep is a 2015 swamp-noir adventure in which Romana Teague, Jack Bellet, and K.C. Gaddis investigate an apparent suicide in the Florida town of Cypress Knee. The campaign has three acts—Wonderland, Festival, and Boomtown. Your choices determine who betrays the group, who survives the Act 2 crisis, and how that survivor behaves in Act 3, but they do not produce completely unrelated finales. The ending deliberately refuses to prove whether Rabbit is a real spirit or a human explanation for Woodstep’s transformation. The final image of Rabbit and Monroe at a Kentucky gas station is a thematic coda, not a fully decoded plot reveal.
What is Knee Deep about?
Released on July 6, 2015, Knee Deep was developed and published by Prologue Games. It is a single-player, choice-based adventure set in Cypress Knee, a struggling Florida town where a washed-up actor appears to have committed suicide. The investigation quickly expands into a conflict involving local power, commercial interests, political maneuvering and a religious-cult dimension.

The game is presented as a theatrical production rather than a conventional camera-driven adventure. Sets rotate or transform like stage scenery, characters sometimes address the audience, and scenes can feel like performances being assembled in front of you. That presentation is not merely decoration: it frames the player as someone helping stage the story, while also making it harder to tell where performance ends and reality begins.

| Acts | Wonderland, Festival and Boomtown |
| Investigators | Blogger Romana Teague, local reporter Jack Bellet and private investigator K.C. Gaddis |
| Setting | The fictional Florida town of Cypress Knee |
| Central case | An apparent on-location suicide that points to a wider conspiracy |
| Story model | Mostly linear investigation with state-dependent scenes, dialogue and survivor changes |
How the three-act structure works
Each act advances the same investigation, but each has a different job. Wonderland establishes the town and the investigators’ competing viewpoints. Festival reveals the social machinery behind Cypress Knee and makes trust a direct survival issue. Boomtown turns the mystery uncanny, introduces resurrection imagery and leaves the explanation deliberately unstable.

The choices are consequential without turning the game into three separate stories. Variables can swap lines, character appearances and the person occupying a key role. The broad sequence remains recognizable, while your earlier decisions alter who is present, who is betrayed and how later scenes read.
Act 1: Wonderland explained
The investigation begins
Wonderland introduces the apparent suicide and the town’s competing versions of what happened. Romana, Jack and K.C. approach the case from different professional and personal angles, so the player sees Cypress Knee as a collection of conflicting testimonies rather than a single objective account.
The act teaches the game’s theatrical grammar. Locations function like stage spaces, characters can perform for one another and for the audience, and a scene’s framing is often as important as the information spoken in it. The result is a detective story in which evidence is always entangled with presentation.
Why Act 1 choices matter later
Act 1 decisions are not simply cosmetic dialogue variations. Developer Wes Platt explained that the act determines which person will “screw you over at the end of Act 2.” In practical terms, the relationships and loyalties you establish here select the character who becomes the pivotal betrayer or underminer later.
That does not mean every conversation has a hidden fail state. It means the game tracks the pattern of your decisions and uses it to assign a later dramatic function. A choice that seems like a minor judgment about trust can therefore change whose actions dominate the next crisis.

Act 2: Festival explained
From one death to a town-wide conspiracy
Festival widens the story beyond the dead actor. Shady local interests, political and commercial dealings, and a religious-cult dimension become part of the investigation. Cypress Knee stops looking like a backdrop and starts behaving like a system that protects itself.
The exact order of scenes can vary with your earlier decisions, but the act’s purpose is consistent: it forces you to decide whom to trust and whom to protect while exposing the interests that benefit from the town’s confusion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe betrayal and the survivor rule
At the end of Act 2, the person selected through your Act 1 choices betrays or undermines the group. The game also has a crucial safeguard: even if you choose to save no one, one person survives the crisis. There is therefore no route in which the entire cast simply disappears and the story ends.
The identity of that survivor changes the emotional direction of Boomtown. Platt described the structure this way: “At the end of Act 1, you’re picking the person who’s going to screw you over at the end of Act 2 (even if you choose to save no one, one person survives) and then that person has second thoughts about their actions at the end of Act 3.” The survivor’s later reconsideration is the bridge between the political thriller of Act 2 and the metaphysical uncertainty of Act 3.
Act 3: Boomtown explained
Why the tone becomes uncanny
Boomtown introduces a resurrection element and asks whether the impossible events should be understood literally. The investigation no longer operates only through documents, motives and testimony; it now includes apparent returns from death and encounters that do not fit ordinary cause and effect.

This tonal shift is intentional. A review described the third act as becoming “a bit too uncanny,” which captures the move from swamp noir into surreal and metaphysical territory. The game does not supply a single piece of evidence that closes the case in favor of either a paranormal or a purely material explanation.

The stage metaphor reaches its peak
When the three protagonists interact, the game emphasizes the sensation of putting on a production rather than controlling one hero. Platt said his hope was that players would feel less like “I’m playing this character” and more like “I’m putting on this show.” In Boomtown, that distinction matters because the characters may be acting, being watched, remembering events imperfectly or participating in forces they do not understand.
Who is Rabbit?
Rabbit is the central unresolved presence in the ending. The game gives enough evidence to support a supernatural reading, but it never requires you to accept one. The two strongest interpretations are compatible with the scenes you see.
| Interpretation | How it explains the evidence |
|---|---|
| Rabbit is a real spirit | Woodstep begins as an ordinary disgruntled ex-employee, then says church thugs attacked him behind the RV and appears to speak as Rabbit. The resurrection material and the later movement through Kentucky suggest a supernatural force operating beyond Cypress Knee. |
| Rabbit is a human or psychological phenomenon | Woodstep may have suffered a concussion and require medical attention. “Rabbit” could be a persona, delusion, trauma response or deliberate manipulation rather than a demonstrable spirit. |
The game does not provide an objective test that distinguishes these explanations. Its weirdness remains meaningful under either reading: a spirit has entered the story, or damaged perception and performance have created one. The safest answer to “Is Rabbit real?” is therefore: Rabbit may be real, but Knee Deep is designed so that the player cannot prove it.
Woodstep, Monroe and the Kentucky gas-station scene
What happens at the end
Near the conclusion, Rabbit and Monroe are seen walking past a gas station in Kentucky. This is not presented as a conventional travel epilogue that explains how everyone got from Florida to a precise destination. It is a deliberately destabilizing image after the story has already loosened the boundaries between ordinary events, spiritual forces and theatrical roles.

What the image can mean
- A larger metaphysical geography: Rabbit’s influence may extend beyond Cypress Knee, with Monroe connected to the same force.
- Agents continuing the story: Rabbit and Monroe may be “agents of change and action,” moving into another stage of an unfinished conflict.
- A performance outside the original set: The scene may be another layer of the game’s theatrical conceit, showing characters continuing to perform after the apparent finale.
- A psychological reading: The image can represent a constructed or distorted account rather than literal supernatural travel.
None of these readings is confirmed as the canonical explanation. The Kentucky setting is best understood as a final destabilizing coda: it enlarges the mystery instead of translating it into a fact sheet.
What choices really change
Knee Deep is a branching narrative, but it is not an anthology of wholly different endings. The supported variations are concentrated in a few systems.
| Choice effect | What you may see change |
|---|---|
| Act 1 relationship and trust decisions | Which character is positioned to betray or undermine the group at the end of Act 2 |
| Act 2 rescue or protection decisions | Which character survives the crisis; one person survives even if you save no one |
| Survivor state | How that character behaves and reconsiders the consequences of their actions in Act 3 |
| State-dependent variables | Lines, character appearances and the order or framing of some key scenes |
| Your interpretation | Whether the supernatural material feels like literal haunting, psychological damage, staged manipulation or an intentional mixture |
Because the available branches are state-dependent, a second playthrough is most useful when you deliberately change whom you trust or protect in the first two acts. It will reveal different dramatic emphasis and survivor behavior, not a wholly separate plot with a new solution to Rabbit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who survives Knee Deep?
There is no single fixed survivor that applies to every playthrough. The survivor is determined by the Act 2 crisis and the choices leading into it. The game guarantees that one person remains even if the player chooses not to save anyone, then uses that character’s regret or second thoughts as part of Act 3.

This is why guides that name one universal survivor can be misleading. The reliable rule is structural rather than character-specific: your decisions determine the survivor slot, and the survivor’s identity changes the emotional texture of the final act.

Why the ending stays unresolved
The ambiguity is part of the game’s subject, not an unfinished explanation. Cypress Knee is built around people performing roles, selling stories and protecting institutions. The theatrical staging turns that social behavior into a literal visual language, while Rabbit and the resurrection material push the same question into metaphysics: is someone transforming, pretending, hallucinating or actually becoming something else?
A definitive reveal would collapse those layers into one answer. By withholding proof, the game makes the player evaluate testimony, staging and perception in the same way the investigators do. The ending therefore resolves the characters’ movement through the conspiracy more than it resolves the ontology of Rabbit.
Practical play and access notes
The complete campaign consists of all three acts, and the investigation is designed to be played in order. Each episode contains a small number of interactive investigation beats—one review characterized the structure as roughly one puzzle per episode—so the main activity is choosing responses, pursuing leads and managing relationships rather than solving a large inventory of conventional puzzles.

- macOS limitation: The listing warns that the game is not compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. Check the operating-system requirement before purchasing or installing on a Mac.
- Living-room and headset options: The listing includes Remote Play on TV and VR support. Those labels describe available access modes; they do not change the story branches.
- Soundtrack: Act-specific soundtrack products are listed separately, and Prologue Games identifies the swamp-noir soundtrack through its official Bandcamp presence.
Because the game relies on state-dependent scenes, keep a manual save before major trust or rescue decisions if your platform allows it. That makes it easier to compare survivor outcomes without replaying the entire campaign, although the precise save controls depend on the platform version.
The ending in one sentence
Knee Deep ends with a survivor carrying the consequences of the Act 2 betrayal into an uncanny final movement, while Rabbit and Monroe’s appearance in Kentucky leaves open whether a spirit has escaped Cypress Knee or whether the characters are trapped in a psychological and theatrical performance.
