What the KLS GIT–Purosil MoU announces
According to KLS GIT’s announcement, the MoU was signed by KLS GIT Principal Dr. V. A. Athavale and Purosil Performance Hose LLP CEO Dr. Thomas M. Garrett. Other people named as attendees at the event should not be confused with the signatories.

The institution describes the collaboration as focused on sustainable materials and engineering applications. One planned project is a life-cycle assessment (LCA) comparing silicone hose with EPDM hose. The announcement does not provide the study’s methods, scope, functional unit, timeline or findings, so there is not yet a published project result to use as evidence that one hose material is more sustainable.
What “Biocongruent Chemistry” means in this context
An October 6, 2026 report by India Live frames the MoU within a wider effort called “Biocongruent Chemistry.” The report describes an approach to materials that aims to meet performance and service-life needs while improving how materials interact with natural transformation processes at end of life. It says the work examines soy- and lignin-based building blocks and other bio-derived components.

The report also names MCPU Polymer Engineering, KLS GIT, Purosil, the National Institute for Materials Advancement and LCA Design as participants in the broader effort. That context does not make every named organization a party to the KLS GIT–Purosil MoU. The primary framework paper and the MoU text are not available in the cited material, so the technical definition and scope of “Biocongruent Chemistry” should be understood as the report’s description rather than a verified definition from those primary documents.
Why the silicone-versus-EPDM LCA matters
A useful hose comparison needs to measure equivalent service, not simply compare one kilogram of each material. The result can depend on how long each hose lasts in its intended application, how often it must be replaced, and whether the products deliver comparable performance. Manufacturing impacts, maintenance and end-of-life treatment also matter.

The LCA’s functional unit and system boundary determine what the comparison includes. For example, a study that accounts for replacement over a defined service period may produce a different answer from one limited to manufacturing impacts. KLS GIT has not stated which assumptions its planned study will use.

What existing sustainability claims do—and do not—show
Purosil’s sustainability page argues that its silicone hoses can last longer than EPDM alternatives and discusses recyclability and end-of-life outcomes. These are the company’s claims, not independent findings established by the page; Purosil also notes that sustainability depends on manufacturing energy, use and recycling.
Separately, Rubber World reports a related comparison of silicone rubber heater hose with an EPDM counterpart. It says a cradle-to-grave LCA found roughly one-third the lifetime carbon footprint for the silicone hose after normalizing for service life and replacement frequency. The underlying study and its methods were not available for review here, and the trade report’s figure is not a result of the newly announced KLS GIT–Purosil project.
A 2026 peer-reviewed study in Green Chemistry illustrates why assumptions matter, but it is not a hose study. For a representative virgin RTV-1 silicone sealant, Kunz, Salahudeen and Mejía report a cradle-to-gate estimate of 5.79 kg CO₂-equivalent per kilogram, with 82% attributed to PDMS synthesis in that modeled formulation. They estimate 1.83 kg CO₂-equivalent per kilogram for modeled KOH-catalyzed regenerated PDMS and up to a 55% product-level emissions reduction when recycled PDMS is incorporated. Those estimates apply to the study’s sealant model and recycling scenarios; they cannot be used as figures for Purosil hoses or the planned hose comparison.

A proposed research center, not an opened facility
KLS GIT says the parties will explore creating a Centre for Sustainable Materials, Engineering and Industrial Commercialization within the institute’s Research, Innovation and Development (GRID) framework. The announcement describes a possibility to explore, not a center that has already been established or opened.
