Not yet. Stanford researchers reported that inhibiting the enzyme 15-PGDH regenerated cartilage in aged mice and reduced osteoarthritis development after knee injury in mice. They also saw cartilage-related changes in human tissue samples treated outside the body. The work does not show that the treatment regrows cartilage in living patients, stops arthritis in people, or currently lets anyone avoid a joint replacement.
What Stanford’s study found
Stanford’s November 27, 2025 report describes research targeting 15-PGDH, an enzyme that breaks down prostaglandin E2 and that the researchers characterize as associated with aging. In mouse knee cartilage, 15-PGDH levels rose about two-fold with age, according to the report. The team tested a small-molecule inhibitor to block the enzyme. Stanford Medicine’s study report summarizes the findings.

Cartilage regeneration in aged mice
In aged mice, the inhibitor was given systemically or injected directly into the joint. Stanford reported that cartilage thickened across the joint surface and was hyaline, or articular, cartilage—the type that normally covers joint surfaces—rather than less-functional fibrocartilage. In analyzed mouse cartilage, a cell population associated with hyaline-cartilage formation increased from 22% to 42% after treatment.

The reported mechanism involved existing chondrocytes, the cells that make and maintain cartilage, changing their gene-expression patterns. The researchers did not rely on stem or progenitor cells to produce the new cartilage. Stanford also reported decreases in cell populations associated with cartilage degradation and fibrocartilage.

Fewer signs of osteoarthritis after injury—in mice
In a separate mouse model intended to resemble knee injuries such as ACL tears, researchers injected the inhibitor twice a week for four weeks after injury. Treated animals were less likely to develop osteoarthritis, moved more typically, and put more weight on the affected leg than untreated animals, according to Stanford. These are animal findings, not evidence that the drug prevents post-injury arthritis in people.
Stanford’s report notes that about 50% of people develop osteoarthritis in an injured joint within about 15 years after an ACL tear. That figure describes injury-related risk; it is not a result of the inhibitor study.

Human tissue evidence was outside the body
The human component used cartilage removed from patients undergoing total knee replacement. After one week of treatment in the laboratory, samples showed lower expression of some genes linked to degradation and fibrocartilage and began to regenerate articular cartilage compared with controls. The patients were not given the treatment, so these results do not establish that it works in a living human joint.

The study is promising early-stage research, but it has not established safety, an effective dose, durability, or clinical benefit for people with osteoarthritis. Stanford described a cartilage-regeneration clinical trial as a hoped-for next step; its report does not establish that such a trial has begun. It separately noted that a 15-PGDH inhibitor was in clinical trials for age-related muscle weakness. A trial for that different condition is not evidence of cartilage efficacy.

Nor does the work show that 15-PGDH inhibition can stop arthritis in people or replace current care. It is an experimental drug approach, not an available cartilage treatment or a proven way to avoid knee or hip replacement.
How this differs from injections marketed as “regenerative”
The 15-PGDH inhibitor is not PRP, a bone-marrow or adipose-derived procedure, or a stem-cell injection. Stanford’s Orthobiologics and Regenerative Medicine overview discusses those other approaches and states that stem-cell therapies are not available in standard outpatient clinics and that no stem-cell therapies are FDA-approved for osteoarthritis. Stanford Medicine Magazine’s 2026 overview of cartilage-repair research also warns that clinics market unproven injections: A quest to discover how to repair or rebuild cartilage.

These are distinct interventions with different evidence and intended uses. The sources do not support ranking their effectiveness against one another. Do not assume that a clinic injection, supplement, or product sold as “regenerative” uses Stanford’s inhibitor or reproduces the study’s findings.

Stanford’s study report says patent applications concerning 15-PGDH inhibition in cartilage and tissue rejuvenation were licensed to Epirium Bio. It also reports that Helen Blau co-founded Myoforte/Epirium and held equity and stock options. Those disclosures describe the research’s commercialization relationship; they do not establish that a cartilage product is available to patients.
