Kiwix vs MediaWiki for Hosting Wikipedia Offline: Which Should You Use?

Choose Kiwix for a ready-to-read, read-only Wikipedia archive; choose MediaWiki when you need an editable, multi-user wiki. Kiwix serves a prepared Wikipedia ZIM file from one computer to browsers on your local network, without PHP or a database. MediaWiki is a full wiki application that requires a web server, PHP and a database, but it gives you accounts, permissions, editing, templates and extensions.

The practical choice is therefore about the job, not which product is universally better: Kiwix minimizes setup and maintenance, while MediaWiki provides control at the cost of rebuilding and administering a wiki.

The decision at a glance

What you need Better fit Why
Read-only offline Wikipedia Kiwix Download a prepared ZIM archive and serve it locally.
Fast setup with little administration Kiwix No PHP/database stack or article import is required.
A portable archive on removable storage Kiwix A ZIM file can travel with a laptop, USB drive or portable SSD.
Editing and collaboration MediaWiki It provides database-backed pages, users, rights and revision workflows.
Custom templates and extensions MediaWiki Those are application features rather than properties of a static archive.
A replica of every feature of the live Wikipedia site MediaWiki, with substantial work Article dumps omit several classes of site data and still require administration.
A small local group needing reference material Kiwix first Its lightweight server is simpler to deploy; size the hardware and network for your actual audience.

If nobody needs to change pages, starting with MediaWiki adds infrastructure without solving a problem. If people must write, review or organize local knowledge, a read-only archive cannot substitute for a wiki.

What Kiwix provides

Kiwix distributes web content in ZIM files: highly compressed archives designed for offline browsing. A Wikipedia ZIM is a snapshot of article content and its associated presentation as captured for that release. You download the archive once, open it in a Kiwix reader or serve it through kiwix-serve, and clients browse it with an ordinary web browser.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Kiwix Server is a lightweight HTTP server. A central computer stores one or more ZIM files, and phones, tablets and laptops on the same network visit the server’s local address. The interface includes full-text search and suggestions, so users do not need a special client after the server is running. This appliance-like workflow is the key distinction: acquire an archive, expose it, and maintain the files rather than a database.

What a Kiwix archive is—and is not

  • It is a dated snapshot. Articles reflect the release used, not live Wikipedia.
  • It is normally read-only. Users cannot edit the archived pages or create accounts inside the snapshot.
  • It is self-contained enough to move between compatible storage devices and computers.
  • It does not recreate Wikipedia’s live editing history, user accounts, moderation systems or operational services.

For a household, classroom, emergency kit, shelter or field office, these limits are often advantages: everyone sees the same stable reference set and there is little to administer.

What MediaWiki provides

MediaWiki is the software platform behind many collaborative wikis. Its installation requirements include a web server, PHP and a database. The current requirements specify PHP 8.3.0 or newer and supported versions of MariaDB/MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite; the installation guidance recommends MariaDB/MySQL and assumes a basic understanding of web hosting.

Once installed, MediaWiki stores pages, revisions, users and configuration in a database. You can create accounts, assign rights, edit templates, install extensions and build a knowledge base that changes over time. Those capabilities make it suitable for a team maintaining local procedures, a research collection or a community wiki—not merely for reading an encyclopedia.

The administration you take on

  • Apply operating-system, web-server, PHP, database and MediaWiki security updates.
  • Back up the database and uploaded files, then test that the backups can be restored.
  • Keep extensions and skins compatible with the installed MediaWiki release.
  • Monitor storage, database growth, logs and available memory.
  • Control user registration, permissions and access to the local network.

MediaWiki can run without internet access after installation, but offline operation does not remove these responsibilities. A disconnected server still needs patching through a controlled transfer process and still needs recoverable backups.

How the content workflows differ

Kiwix: replace a snapshot

Updating Kiwix generally means downloading a newer ZIM release and adding it to, or replacing it on, the server. The release date is part of the archive’s identity, so record it when you deploy. Keeping the older file until the new one is verified gives you a rollback option, but it temporarily increases storage use.

This process does not merge local edits because the archive is not an editing database. If you need a newer encyclopedia, you replace the snapshot; if you need local notes, store them in a separate editable system.

MediaWiki: import content and maintain a live database

MediaWiki can ingest Wikipedia XML dumps, but an XML dump is not a complete backup of a wiki database. The import documentation explicitly notes that it does not contain user accounts, images, edit logs and other data. Importing article text therefore gives you a starting corpus, not a ready-made copy of the live site.

Large imports can time out when attempted through a browser. MediaWiki documentation identifies command-line maintenance tooling as the recommended general approach for substantial imports. Plan for disk space, import duration, database tuning and a verification pass before inviting users to edit.

After the initial import, updates are an ongoing editorial and technical task. You must decide whether to repeat periodic dumps, preserve local changes, refresh images separately and resolve conflicts. That work is justified only when the resulting editable wiki is more valuable than a stable archive.

Storage, hardware and network planning

Kiwix archive sizes

The following figures were published for Kiwix/Wikipedia editions in 2024 and should be treated as edition-specific snapshots, not permanent requirements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Archive variant Published size Use case
Wikipedia with pictures 110 GB Readers who need the encyclopedia’s images as well as text.
Wikipedia without pictures 57 GB Text-focused reference where storage or transfer bandwidth is limited.
Introductions-only content 7.4 GB A compact overview for constrained devices or a small essential library.

Reserve additional capacity for a download in progress, a second release, operating-system files and backups. A drive advertised at exactly the archive size leaves no room for safe replacement or recovery. A large USB flash drive or portable SSD is convenient for transport, but reliable storage and a second copy matter more than the connector type.

Serving a local group

A single computer can store the ZIM and run Kiwix Server. Connect it to the same wired or wireless LAN as the client devices, then have users open the server’s local address in a browser. A 2023 Kiwix annual report describes low-cost, off-the-shelf deployments serving up to 25 users, including small single-board computers and mini-servers. That is an example deployment, not a guaranteed concurrency limit; your archive size, hardware, Wi-Fi quality and search workload determine the result.

MediaWiki needs capacity for the database, indexes, uploaded files, temporary import data and backups in addition to the article corpus. A database server and web server can share one machine for a small installation, but separating them may simplify growth and troubleshooting. Neither product’s published material here supplies a controlled benchmark for search speed, CPU use or maximum simultaneous users, so test with your own archive and network rather than relying on an invented threshold.

Setting up Kiwix for offline Wikipedia

  1. Choose the archive variant. Decide whether users need pictures, text-only articles or introductions. Confirm the release date and download enough free space for the file plus a backup.
  2. Download and verify the ZIM. Obtain the archive from Kiwix’s catalog or official library. Keep the original filename and, where available, verify the published checksum before putting it into service.
  3. Store it on dependable media. Put the ZIM on an internal drive, portable SSD or other storage that can sustain repeated reads. Keep a second copy disconnected or on another device.
  4. Install Kiwix Server. Use the platform package or installation method appropriate to the host operating system, then start kiwix-serve and point it at the ZIM file. The server’s documentation supplies the exact options for your platform.
  5. Test locally. From the host computer, open the local server address, search for several common and uncommon articles, follow links and confirm that images appear when you selected an image-inclusive archive.
  6. Test from another device. Join the same LAN from a phone or laptop and open the host’s local address. If it fails, check that both devices are on the same network and that the host firewall allows the server’s listening port.
  7. Make access discoverable. Give users a short printed address or bookmark. A local DNS name is optional; the numeric local address is sufficient for a small deployment.
  8. Document recovery. Record the archive release date, storage location, server host and backup location. Replace the archive only after the new file passes the same search and browsing checks.

Kiwix can also serve more than one ZIM. Separate language editions or subject collections may be useful, but each additional archive consumes storage and can make browsing choices less obvious. Start with the smallest collection that serves the audience.

Building an offline MediaWiki installation

  1. Define the editorial scope. Decide whether you need a complete Wikipedia dump, selected pages, a local manual or a mixture. This determines import size and the extensions you will need.
  2. Prepare the stack. Provision a supported web server, PHP 8.3.0 or newer and a supported MariaDB/MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite release. Follow the current MediaWiki requirements for the exact versions rather than assuming an older package remains supported.
  3. Install MediaWiki. Place the application on the web server, create the database and complete the web installer. Set a strong administrator password even if the server is reachable only on a private LAN.
  4. Configure access and uploads. Choose who may read, edit, create accounts or upload files. Restrict registration and the server’s network exposure to what the project requires.
  5. Import content with maintenance tooling. For a large XML dump, use the documented command-line maintenance process instead of a browser upload that may time out. Monitor logs and database space during the import.
  6. Handle media separately. Because XML dumps do not include images, user accounts or edit logs, obtain and import any media or metadata your project actually needs. Do not describe an article-only import as a full Wikipedia backup.
  7. Test the resulting wiki. Check page rendering, search, templates, categories, account permissions and representative images. Resolve extension compatibility problems before inviting collaborators.
  8. Establish maintenance routines. Schedule database and file backups, document the MediaWiki and extension versions, and define how updates will be transferred to the offline host.

This process can produce a powerful local knowledge system, but it is a software project rather than a file copy. The time saved by Kiwix’s prepared archive is exactly the time MediaWiki spends giving you editability and control.

Which choice fits common scenarios?

Household or personal reference

Use Kiwix. Put an appropriate ZIM on a laptop or portable SSD and run the reader directly, or leave a small computer serving it on the home network. A read-only snapshot avoids user management and database backups.

Classroom, library or community center

Start with Kiwix when the objective is dependable access for a group. The 2023 low-cost deployment example shows the general shape: one modest server, local networking and a centrally maintained archive. Choose hardware and Wi-Fi after estimating how many people will search at once. Choose MediaWiki instead if students or staff must contribute and review local material.

Emergency or field operation

Kiwix is usually the safer first choice because the archive can be carried with the server and does not depend on a database service. Keep a spare copy and a written startup procedure. A MediaWiki installation is appropriate when the field team must record changing reports, inventories or procedures, and someone is assigned to administer it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Institutional knowledge base

MediaWiki is the stronger fit when ownership, revision history, permissions, templates and extensions are requirements. Treat the Wikipedia dump as source material and design an import, governance and backup plan around the institution’s own content.

Trying to reproduce Wikipedia itself

Neither option is a one-click replica. Kiwix gives you a browsable snapshot, not a live collaborative site. MediaWiki gives you the application framework, but reconstructing all of Wikipedia’s images, accounts, logs, templates, extensions and operational behavior requires substantial additional data and administration.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Common pitfalls and fixes

Assuming “offline” means “current”

Both approaches are disconnected from live updates once deployed. With Kiwix, record the ZIM release date and plan periodic replacements. With MediaWiki, define an import and review cycle; an old dump remains old even if the software is current.

Filling a drive to its advertised capacity

An archive that barely fits cannot be safely replaced or backed up. Keep working space and at least one independent copy, especially for the 110 GB image-inclusive edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting an XML dump to restore a wiki

It will not restore user accounts, images or edit logs. Treat it as content for an import and gather the other data separately when your project needs it.

Opening the server to the internet

Local offline hosting does not require public exposure. Keep Kiwix or MediaWiki bound to the intended local interface, use firewall rules, and avoid port forwarding unless you have a specific security design and maintenance plan.

Choosing MediaWiki for a read-only audience

If nobody edits, the database, PHP runtime and update burden are overhead. Re-evaluate the requirement before building the larger system.

Choosing Kiwix for collaborative work

A ZIM cannot provide accounts, permissions or revision history. Install an editable wiki or another collaboration tool for content that must change, and keep Kiwix as a reference snapshot if that is useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you use both?

Yes. A practical arrangement is Kiwix for the immutable encyclopedia and MediaWiki for local documents, annotations and procedures. Link from the editable wiki to the Kiwix server’s local address when users need background reading, while keeping the two systems’ update and backup schedules separate. This avoids modifying the archive while still giving a team a place to collaborate.

Final recommendation

For offline Wikipedia on a home, classroom, emergency or small local network, deploy Kiwix first: select the smallest suitable ZIM, store it on reliable backed-up media, and serve it with kiwix-serve. Move to MediaWiki only when editing, user management, permissions, templates or extensions are central requirements and you are prepared to operate the PHP/database stack. That division keeps a simple reference deployment simple and reserves the heavier platform for projects that genuinely need a wiki.
