The KitchenAid KES6551 is a semi-automatic espresso machine with a built-in burr grinder, a steam wand and a 58 mm portafilter. It is aimed at people who want to make espresso hands-on without buying a separate grinder. Its smart dosing and easy-tamp portafilter simplify parts of the routine, but you still need to adjust the grind and dose to suit your coffee. TechRadar’s May 2026 hands-on review praised its solid-feeling build and portafilter design while noting that it offers less guided assistance than some rivals.
What the KitchenAid KES6551 does
The KES6551 combines a grinder and espresso machine in one semi-automatic unit. You grind and prepare coffee in the portafilter, start the shot, and operate the steam wand yourself; it is not a push-button superautomatic that handles the entire drink automatically. KitchenAid describes its smart-dosing feature as a way to produce a dose for one or two shots at a button press, while still leaving room for hands-on grind and dose adjustment. The machine also has fast-heating technology, a multi-angle steam wand, a hot-water spout and a cleaning-cycle notification. Those features cover the core espresso and milk-drink workflow; they do not make the process fully automatic or provide the extensive guided adjustments some competing machines offer. How hands-on is it to use?
Grinding and dosing
The integrated burr grinder removes the need to buy a separate grinder to get started. Smart dosing is intended to make preparing a one- or two-shot dose more convenient, but it is not a guarantee that every bean will extract as you prefer. TechRadar’s reviewer found that dialing in the grind and dose takes experimentation. If you want to learn how small changes affect a shot, that adjustment is part of the appeal; if you expect the machine to recommend settings and guide each step, its feature set may feel basic beside more assisted rivals. Tamping and pulling a shot
The 58 mm flat-base portafilter is a notable design choice. KitchenAid says the broad, flat base makes tamping easier and more stable, and TechRadar’s reviewer also praised its convenience. You still prepare and tamp the coffee yourself, so the design makes one hands-on step more approachable rather than removing it. KitchenAid’s product listing
Milk drinks and hot water
The multi-angle steam wand lets you steam milk for drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes, while a separate hot-water spout supports hot-water dispensing. TechRadar found the wand and spout cover the basics, but noted that some rivals add features such as cold-brew options or a more guided workflow. The KES6551 is therefore best understood as a traditional espresso-and-steaming setup, not an all-in-one beverage menu. TechRadar’s review

- You are comfortable adjusting grind and dose as you learn what works with your coffee.
- You value the 58 mm flat-base portafilter and a solid-feeling metal-clad design.
- You mainly want espresso, steamed-milk drinks and hot water rather than a broader set of automated or specialty drink options.

- You need a feature such as cold brew that TechRadar says some competing machines offer.
Verdict
The KitchenAid KES6551 is a capable-looking choice for someone who wants the fundamentals of a semi-automatic espresso setup in one machine and is willing to learn through adjustments. Its integrated grinder, practical dosing feature and easy-tamp portafilter are balanced by a workflow that still asks the user to dial in coffee and offers less guidance than some rivals. Whether it is worth buying comes down to current local pricing, the amount of control you want, and the regional warranty and box contents.
