Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) ceremonially commissioned HoreKa 2 on September 25, 2026, after the first phase of user operations began on August 10. KIT reports more than 42,000 processor cores and 300 AI accelerators, with planned peak performance of around 33 petaFLOPS. The system is intended to support research at KIT and across Germany.
What is HoreKa 2?
HoreKa 2 is KIT’s new high-performance computing facility, succeeding the institute’s HoreKa system, which entered operation in 2021. The facility cost EUR 17 million, according to KIT’s September 25, 2026 commissioning announcement.

The September ceremony marked its formal commissioning, not the start of all user access: NHR@KIT says the first operational phase began August 10, 2026. That distinction matters because HoreKa 2 was being brought online in stages.

How powerful is HoreKa 2?
- Processor cores: more than 42,000.
- AI accelerators: 300.
- Peak performance: around 33 petaFLOPS planned.
These are figures reported by KIT, not results from an independent benchmark. In particular, the 33-petaFLOPS figure is a planned peak-performance specification; KIT’s announcement does not describe it as a measured benchmark result. The official sources reviewed do not provide a complete component-by-component configuration or an independent, like-for-like performance comparison with the predecessor.

When did users get access, and what is rolling out?
NHR@KIT describes a staged deployment in its HoreKa 2 launch update, last changed August 12, 2026:
- The Onyx CPU partition was the first made available for user operations, beginning August 10, 2026.
- Additional GPU resources and specialist nodes for data- and memory-intensive applications were to follow.
- The Jade GPU partition features NVIDIA Blackwell technology, according to NHR@KIT.
Consequently, the August start date does not mean every partition or the system’s eventual full capacity was already available. The available official materials do not give a complete schedule for each later rollout stage.

What research will HoreKa 2 support?
KIT says the facility is intended for work in climate research, materials science, particle physics, energy, mobility and AI. High-performance computing can help researchers process large datasets and run complex simulations, supporting more detailed models and studies of materials and sustainable technologies.

Martin Frank, a member of the KIT Scientific Computing Center directorate, said the new system would “double the computing power for simulations and AI applications.” That is KIT’s stated comparison; the announcement does not provide a benchmark method or external validation for the claim. The system is intended to serve researchers at KIT and across Germany.

How does KIT say it will manage energy and cooling?
KIT says performance and energy efficiency received equal priority during development and procurement. HoreKa 2 uses hot-water cooling; KIT says this enables efficient operation and year-round free cooling. NHR@KIT says the computing components are cooled almost entirely with hot water and that waste heat can be used for heating.
KIT also says the electricity supply at Campus North is 100 percent based on renewable energy, with cogeneration and photovoltaic facilities contributing to the site’s supply. KIT characterizes HoreKa 2 as among the most energy-efficient systems in its performance class worldwide, but the official materials cited here do not include an independent comparative study supporting that ranking.
