You can use Kiro Crew’s app kit to build a small app that combines an agent, a skill, a weekday schedule, and a dashboard page. Sarvar Nadaf’s tutorial demonstrates that idea with a Daily Standup Bot, but its “five minutes” is the author’s quick-start framing—not a measured build-time guarantee. For a current setup, start with Kiro Crew’s official scaffold and prerequisites rather than assuming every command or manifest field in the example remains current.
What the Daily Standup Bot does
The example app reads recent Git commits and formats a standup into three prompts: “What I Did,” “What’s Blocked,” and “What’s Next.” It is designed to run on weekdays and show a history and summary in a custom dashboard page. That makes it more than a single prompt: the package brings together an agent, a Markdown skill, a scheduled task, and a React UI.

Nadaf describes Kiro Crew apps as: “Not plugins. Not scripts. Full apps with their own agents, skills, cron jobs, and dashboard pages.” The example illustrates that flexibility; an app can be narrower or broader depending on its files and declared capabilities.

Check prerequisites before scaffolding
- Kiro Crew must be installed and running, with its gateway started using
kirocrew gateway. - For UI apps, the official App Kit documentation specifies Node.js 22.12 or later and recommends Node.js 24 LTS.
- The dashboard-hosted UI uses hooks and components from
@kirocrew/app-sdk. The official guide says not to install this SDK separately and to mark it as external in the UI build.

Scaffold a UI app with the current workflow
- From a terminal where Kiro Crew is available, generate the recommended UI app structure:
kirocrew app init my-dashboard --ui. - Review the generated files. The scaffold supplies a manifest, placeholder icon, agent, skill, and UI build files; use these as the starting point rather than hand-assembling the whole package.
- Edit the manifest and source files for your app. The manifest connects the app identity to its agent and skill paths, UI entry point, page routes, and permissions.
- Build the UI from the UI directory using the command specified by the generated project and current documentation. The app needs a built UI bundle before installation.
- Install and enable the app using the current Crew CLI or dashboard workflow, then open the dashboard to verify its page loads.
The official guide is the source of truth for exact install and authentication syntax; the tutorial’s local install sequence may reflect an earlier CLI version.
Understand the example’s files and configuration
Nadaf’s example uses five key pieces. Its repository describes the app as an agent that reads commits, a skill that defines the standup format, a weekday cron, and a dashboard that shows history and a summary. The example’s configuration is useful for understanding the design, but check it against the current manifest reference before copying it verbatim.

Permissions are part of the manifest
The current scaffold does not automatically add a permissions block, according to the official guide. Declare the API paths and event types the UI uses; the SDK rejects undeclared requests. Keep permissions limited to what the app needs, especially if you plan to publish it.
Where to customize behavior
The example repository identifies the main customization points: agent behavior in the agent JSON, standup formatting in the Markdown skill, scheduling in app.json, and the dashboard view in ui/src/App.tsx. Its example code is licensed under MIT, as stated by the repository. Review the license and current source files before reusing or modifying code.

Build, install, and verify the app
After editing the configuration and UI, build the bundle and install the app using the current official workflow. Then enable it and check that the dashboard page appears. Test the agent and schedule separately: a page rendering successfully does not prove that commit access, agent output, or the cron job is working.
- Trigger the agent manually in Crew chat and inspect whether it can read the intended commits.
- Check the rendered output for all three standup sections and confirm the history view updates as expected.
- Verify that the scheduled run occurs at the intended local time; do not infer time-zone behavior from the cron expression alone.
- If the app fails to load, inspect logs and validate the manifest against the current App Kit requirements. Check UI build output, entry paths, and declared permissions.
Nadaf reports that his demo processed 11 commits in 9 seconds. That is an author-reported illustrative run, not an independently measured benchmark or a typical-result guarantee.

Publish through the app registry
The tutorial describes adding repository metadata to the app registry and submitting a pull request. For a release, follow the current official publishing guide, which advises developers to validate the manifest, choose a unique kebab-case name and semantic version, keep permissions minimal, build the UI bundle, validate agent and skill files, and check minimum Crew-version compatibility. Registry refresh and installation details may change, so use the current guide for the publication and installation flow.

The tutorial presents the example as a five-file, five-minute build. That describes the author’s quick-start framing, not a measured average or promise that a new developer can complete the work in five minutes. The current documented prerequisites, scaffold review, permission setup, UI build, and validation all matter to the actual time required.
