It is designed for read-intensive workloads and rated at 1 drive write per day (DWPD). Its headline speeds are high, but whether it is a good fit depends first on E3.S platform compatibility and then on how much your workload writes.
What the CM9-R 15.36TB is—and what it is not
Kioxia’s 2025 product brief describes the CM9-R E3.S family as a read-intensive enterprise SSD compliant with PCIe 5.0 and NVMe 2.0. The 15,360 GB model uses BiCS FLASH generation 8 3D TLC NAND. Its intended applications include AI and machine learning, business intelligence, data warehousing, transactional and relational databases, software-defined storage, and virtualization. Kioxia describes the family as “a read intensive SSD that is optimized to support a broad range of enterprise applications and associated workloads.” (Kioxia CM9-R Series (E3.S) Product Brief, 2025.)

The E3.S form factor is a physical and platform requirement, not just a product label. This drive will not drop into a standard M.2 slot; the system needs an appropriate E3.S bay, host support for its PCIe/NVMe interface, and suitable cooling. The listed family configuration supports PCIe 5.0 x4, with dual-port x2 support reported by StorageReview. Confirm that topology against the exact ordered SKU and intended system. How fast is the 15.36TB model?
Kioxia’s figures below are maximum sustained specifications for the 15,360 GB model in single-port 1×4 mode. Sequential results use 128 KiB blocks; random results use 4 KiB blocks. These are manufacturer ratings, not a promise that every server will reach them: host configuration, queue depth, workload, and other test conditions affect observed performance. (Kioxia, 2025.)

What independent tests found
ServeTheHome tested a KCM9XRJE15T3 sample with firmware 15ETE105 using fio 3.42 and io_uring direct I/O on an Intel Xeon w9-3495X system running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Each data point ran for 300 seconds after a 30-second ramp period; its random-test ladder reached an outstanding I/O level of 2048. In sequential 128K sweeps, the review measured 14.9 GB/s read and 11.3 GB/s write. Those are results from that disclosed setup, not guaranteed speeds in another platform. Its comparison drives ranged from 1.6TB to 7.68TB, so their capacities differ from the CM9-R sample’s 15.36TB. (ServeTheHome, October 5, 2026.)
StorageReview characterized the 15.36TB capacity as the point where the CM9-R has its strongest write specifications and reported the lowest low-queue-depth latency in its comparison group across its tested workloads. That is a finding from its test suite and comparison set, not a universal ranking. (StorageReview, September 2, 2026.)

ServeTheHome likewise found strong low-outstanding-I/O results, but noted that the Phison Pascari X200E 6.4TB was faster in some higher-I/O comparisons. It described CM9-R as strong in mixed workloads while suggesting the write-focused CM9-V could do better in some write-heavy comparisons. The CM9-R is therefore not best understood as the fastest choice for every workload; queue depth, write mix, capacity, and the comparison set matter. (ServeTheHome.)
Is 1 DWPD enough for your workload?
Kioxia rates the CM9-R E3.S family at 1 DWPD, making endurance a central selection criterion. DWPD means drive writes per day over the applicable warranty period, but the product brief excerpt does not state that period or a total bytes-written limit. Get the endurance and warranty terms for the exact SKU from Kioxia or the seller before sizing a deployment.

If an application writes heavily or continuously, compare its expected daily writes with the drive’s rated endurance rather than relying on peak throughput. Kioxia’s separate CM9-V line is rated at 3 DWPD and is positioned for mixed use; it is not simply the same drive with a higher endurance number, and capacity and performance options differ. Match the family to the workload and compare the exact model specifications. (Kioxia, 2025; StorageReview.)
Platform, protection, and SKU checks before buying
StorageReview reports 25W typical active power and lists power-loss protection and end-to-end data protection as standard for the reviewed family. It also identifies SIE, SED, and FIPS 140-3 SED security variants. These details should be confirmed for the exact ordered part number: family-level capabilities and a review sample do not establish what is included in every SKU. (StorageReview.)

- Thermals: Check the server’s airflow and cooling design. ServeTheHome recorded a peak composite temperature of 60.9°C against a 76.9°C warning threshold in its run; those figures describe its test enclosure and conditions, not another system’s expected temperatures. (ServeTheHome.)
- Data protection and security: Confirm the exact SKU’s power-loss protection, end-to-end protection, and required security certification or encryption option.
- Warranty and procurement: ServeTheHome lists a five-year warranty for its sample, but verify warranty coverage, exact part number, price, and regional stock with the seller or manufacturer before ordering. The reviewed sources do not establish current street price or availability.
Verdict: a strong candidate when reads dominate and the system fits
The CM9-R 15.36TB makes sense to evaluate for high-capacity enterprise storage where reads dominate, PCIe 5.0 bandwidth is useful, and the host has a compatible E3.S bay. Its rated throughput is substantial, and independent reviews report strong performance under their specific test conditions. The 1 DWPD rating makes it a less natural fit for sustained write-heavy use; compare the CM9-V or another higher-endurance option when write volume is a primary requirement. Before procurement, validate platform fit, cooling, exact SKU protections, endurance terms, and warranty rather than choosing from headline speed alone.
