Its main stages are crawling, indexing, and serving results—but a page being found does not guarantee that Google will index it or show it in search.
What Google Search is
Google Search is a service for finding information across the web and other content Google organizes in Search. Its index contains information about webpages, images, books, videos, facts, and more. Google describes its automated systems as sorting through “hundreds of billions of webpages and other information” in that index; this is Google’s own description of its scale, not an independently verified count. It is more than a directory of links. Depending on the query, the results page may include different kinds of results or features—for example, images or local results—alongside webpages.
How Google Search works
Google explains Search through three stages. They describe distinct tasks, not a promise that every page will pass through all of them. Google Search Central’s guide to how Search works

1. Crawling: finding and retrieving pages
Automated programs called crawlers discover URLs and retrieve page content. Because there is no central registry containing every web page, Google continually looks for new and updated pages. Discovery and retrieval can be affected by server or network problems, or by rules that block Googlebot. Google can also render pages and run JavaScript as part of crawling.
2. Indexing: analyzing and storing information
Google analyzes retrieved content, including text, images, video, and relevant page attributes. It also considers how a page relates to duplicates and canonical versions, then stores information in its index. Some pages that Google crawls are not indexed.

3. Serving results: matching a query
When someone searches, Google searches its index and programmatically selects and orders results it considers relevant. Ranking systems may consider query words, page relevance and usability, source expertise, location, and settings. Google’s public explanation offers examples rather than a complete formula: it does not disclose the exact ranking formula or the weight assigned to each factor. Crawled, indexed, and shown are different things
- Crawled: Google retrieved the page or its content.
- Indexed: Google analyzed and stored information about it.
- Served: Google selected the page to display for a particular search.
A page can be crawled but not indexed. An indexed page may still not appear for the query a person has in mind. Google does not guarantee that it will crawl, index, or serve a page, even if it follows Google Search Essentials. Nor does Google accept payment to rank pages higher. Google Search Central

In short
Google Search discovers content, analyzes and stores information about it, then matches queries with results from its index. A page’s presence on the web—or even in Google’s index—does not ensure that it will appear in every relevant search.
