Alarik is software you run on infrastructure you control to store and serve objects through an S3-compatible API. It is not a managed cloud-storage service. The project announced beta status on July 6, 2026, and its author cautioned that it was not yet ready for users to trust with production workloads.
What Alarik does
Alarik is an object storage server written in Swift and licensed under Apache 2.0. Object storage is designed for files and other unstructured data—such as images, video, backups, logs, and static assets—addressed as objects rather than managed like files on a traditional shared drive.

You host Alarik yourself, then configure compatible applications to send requests to its endpoint. The project lists AWS SDKs, s3cmd, and rclone as possible clients. “S3-compatible” does not guarantee that every AWS S3 operation or edge case works identically: verify the specific API calls and workflows your application depends on.

Alarik’s project materials list core object operations, multipart uploads, versioning, conditional requests, range reads, presigned URLs, bucket policies, lifecycle rules, webhooks, replication, and an administrative web console. The repository says deletion and replication of existing objects are opt-in. This documented feature set is not evidence of complete AWS S3 parity.
#1 Best Overall
- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Before migrating an application, test its actual behavior against Alarik: authentication and request signing, the operations it uses, multipart handling, policy expectations, presigned links, and error handling. Pay particular attention to the configured region: Alarik’s installation guide says clients’ request-signing region must match ALARIK_REGION, whose default is a single deployment-wide region.
Beta status and operational confidence
Alarik’s July 6, 2026 announcement described the API surface, console, and configuration model as stable, but also explicitly warned against production reliance. Author Julian Gerhards wrote, “We’re not asking anyone to bet production workloads on it just yet.” That is the project’s position at the time of the announcement, not a claim about its status today. Check current releases, issue activity, support options, and the features you need before choosing it for important data.

The project overview makes throughput claims and the repository refers to benchmarks, but the available materials do not establish a performance figure with inspectable methodology. Treat speed and reliability claims as project statements, not independent test results.

How deployment works
Docker Compose quick start
The installation guide’s example uses Docker Compose with an API container and a separate console container. It recommends Docker and Docker Compose, with Docker 20.10 or later. The example uses the ghcr.io/achtungsoftware/alarik:latest API image on port 8080 and ghcr.io/achtungsoftware/alarik-console:latest on port 3000, and mounts persistent storage at /app/Storage using a named Docker volume.

Those image tags, ports, and instructions are the guide’s recipe and may change; use the current official installation guide when deploying. Ensure the storage mount points to persistent capacity rather than a disposable container filesystem. Size storage to your data and redundancy needs; the documentation does not prescribe a particular disk, capacity, or RAID arrangement.
Native builds and platform
The guide says native builds require Swift 6.2 or later and are supported on Linux and macOS. It directs Windows users to Docker.

Security and data durability
- Replace the example administrator credentials before production use; the guide says the published examples are publicly known.
- Generate a unique, strong JWT secret and unique S3 access keys. Do not reuse example secrets or credentials.
- Keep the service and its console appropriately restricted, and configure access policies for the applications and users that need them.
- Keep fsync enabled for production data unless you understand the acknowledged-write trade-off. Alarik’s guide says fsync is enabled by default and that acknowledged uploads survive a power failure or crash once flushed to stable storage. Disabling it trades that stated protection for throughput. These are vendor-documented behaviors, not independently verified results.
A storage server is only one part of a recovery plan. Decide how you will protect the underlying disks, restore configuration and credentials, and recover objects after hardware or operator failure. A multi-node layout does not replace a tested recovery procedure.
Single-node or cluster mode
Single-node
Single-node mode is the self-contained starting point. The erasure-coding documentation describes objects in this mode as local files. It is simpler to operate, but it does not distribute object data across nodes.
Best Value
- Value NAS with RAID for centralized storage and backup for all your devices. Check out the LS 700 for enhanced features, cloud capabilities, macOS 26, and up to 7x faster performance than the LS 200.

- Back Up Multiple Computers & Devices – NAS Navigator management utility and PC backup software included. NAS Navigator 2 for macOS 15 and earlier. You can set up automated backups of data on your computers.
Cluster
Cluster mode is optional. Alarik’s documentation says any node can serve requests while object data and control-plane metadata are distributed, using Reed-Solomon erasure coding for distributed object data. The scaling guide says no external database is required. The project describes durability and overhead benefits, but those are project claims; assess failure handling, node recovery, and the consequences of losing storage before relying on a particular topology.
Is Alarik the right self-hosted S3 choice?
Self-hosting can give you control over where data resides and how the storage is operated, but it also makes you responsible for infrastructure, security, monitoring, upgrades, capacity, and recovery. A managed service shifts much of that infrastructure work to its provider, while leaving you to evaluate its billing, data location, access controls, and service terms.
Alarik may be worth evaluating for development, experimentation, or a small project if its current feature set meets your needs and you can operate the system. Its beta announcement’s production caution is material for anyone considering important workloads. Compare any alternatives using current project status and licensing rather than relying on a vendor’s comparison alone.
- Required S3 behavior: confirm the exact operations and client workflow, not just the compatibility label.
- Maturity: review current releases, issue activity, support, and documented upgrade and recovery paths.
- Topology: decide whether a single node is sufficient or whether you need distributed data and metadata handling.
- Total operating burden: account for hardware or hosting, storage growth, maintenance, security, backups, and the time needed to respond to failures.
- Control requirements: check whether its licensing, console, identity model, and data-location options fit your organization.
