Use a supported gamepad, then match the resolution and frame-rate target to your hardware. Steam lists full controller support for KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-, including DualShock and DualSense categories. Its published targets are 30 FPS at 1280×720 for minimum-class systems and 60 FPS at 1920×1080 for recommended systems. Start with those targets, prioritize stable frame pacing over a higher number, and troubleshoot USB/Bluetooth input separately from graphics settings.
What the PC collection includes

This guide applies to that 1.5+2.5 collection, not to every Kingdom Hearts title released on PC. The settings advice is intentionally tied to the figures published for this collection rather than to an unverified universal “best” preset.

Which controller works on PC?
SteamDB records Full Controller Support and specifically lists DualShock Controllers, DualShock Controllers (USB Only), DualSense Controllers, and DualSense Controllers (USB Only). A PlayStation-style USB or Bluetooth pad is therefore the most clearly represented controller family in the storefront metadata. A DualSense Wireless Controller for PC is a practical choice if you want that layout, but check the current model, cable, and wireless requirements before buying.

The metadata does not publish a model-by-model compatibility chart, a complete button map, or a guaranteed remapping procedure for every third-party pad. Treat a controller category shown by Steam as stronger evidence than an unlisted model, and use the game’s own control options when the installed build provides them.
USB or Bluetooth?

USB is the simpler diagnostic baseline because it removes wireless pairing and battery issues. Once the game recognizes the pad over USB, you can test Bluetooth without changing the in-game controls.
Basic setup sequence
- Connect the controller to the PC by USB, or pair it in Windows Bluetooth settings if you are using a wireless connection.
- Start Steam and launch the collection after Windows reports the controller as connected.
- At the title screen or in gameplay, press a few buttons and confirm that the game responds with controller input rather than keyboard prompts only.
- Open the game’s available control settings and adjust the layout or sensitivity options shown by your installed version. Do not assume a menu label that is not present in your build.
- Save the configuration, return to gameplay, and verify movement, camera control, menu navigation, and confirm/cancel buttons before beginning a long session.
If the game does not respond
- Disconnect and reconnect the pad, then restart the game with the controller already attached.
- If Bluetooth input fails, repeat the test over USB; if USB works, remove and recreate the Bluetooth pairing before trying wireless play again.
- Close other controller-mapper or virtual-input software temporarily. Two programs translating the same pad can create duplicate or missing inputs.
- Test the controller in another PC game or in Windows’ controller test panel to separate a hardware or Windows problem from a Kingdom Hearts problem.
- Use the storefront’s controller configuration only as a troubleshooting layer; prefer the game’s native controls when they are available.
These are general PC troubleshooting steps, not a claim that every controller or mapper has been tested with this collection.

Graphics settings to change first
Steam’s official requirements give two useful starting points. The minimum tier targets 30 FPS at 1280×720; the recommended tier targets 60 FPS at 1920×1080. Both tiers specify 64-bit Windows 10 version 1909 or later, DirectX 11, 60 GB of storage, and a GeForce GTX 750/Radeon RX 460-class graphics processor. Memory is 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended.

These are vendor targets, not independent benchmark results. They do not establish how every processor, graphics driver, monitor, or later Windows configuration will perform.
Recommended order for reducing stutter
- Begin at the profile that matches your hardware: 1280×720/30 FPS near minimum, or 1920×1080/60 FPS near recommended.
- If frame delivery is uneven, lower resolution before changing several other options at once. This gives the clearest test of whether the graphics processor is the limiting factor.
- If the game exposes a frame-rate limit, select the lower target that remains stable rather than choosing a higher number that fluctuates. The exact control name can vary by installed build.
- If a refresh-rate or VSync option is available, test it one change at a time. VSync can align frames with the display but may add latency or make uneven performance more noticeable.
- After changing a setting that does not apply immediately, return to the title screen or restart the game. Some builds apply display changes only after leaving gameplay or relaunching.
- Once frame pacing is stable, raise resolution or the frame-rate target incrementally. Stop at the highest setting the PC can sustain during normal play, not merely during a quiet menu scene.
The published information does not document every graphics-menu option in the installed game, so there is no evidence-based universal 120 FPS or unlocked-frame-rate recommendation. A stable 30 or 60 FPS target is the defensible baseline.

Meeting a minimum requirement does not guarantee a locked 30 FPS in every scene, while meeting the recommended line does not guarantee perfect frame pacing on every display. Use the target table as a starting point and judge the result by consistency.
How to diagnose persistent stutter
Stutter disappears at 1280×720
The higher resolution was likely exceeding the graphics headroom available in your current configuration. Keep 1280×720, or test an intermediate resolution if the game offers one, and retain the lower frame-rate target that stays even.
Stutter remains at 1280×720
- Confirm that the frame-rate target is 30 FPS rather than an unstable higher setting.
- Close unnecessary background applications, especially overlays and capture tools, then retest.
- Check that the game is using the intended GPU on systems with integrated and discrete graphics.
- Restart after display changes and compare the same gameplay section, because menus are not a useful performance test.
Input feels inconsistent but the frame rate is stable
Investigate the controller path separately: switch Bluetooth to USB, remove duplicate mapper layers, and test the pad in Windows or another game. Graphics changes will not repair a pairing or virtual-input conflict.

Steam Deck status
SteamDB marks the collection as Steam Deck Verified. Its record says the default controller configuration is fully functional and the default graphics configuration performs well. The compatibility test timestamp shown is 14 November 2024. That is platform metadata, not a benchmark promise for every Windows PC, external monitor, or custom Deck resolution. Start with the Deck defaults before making changes, and alter one setting at a time if a particular display or dock introduces a problem.

Controller-disconnection fix in the Epic build
Square Enix’s Epic patch page, dated 20 September 2021, identifies update 1.0.0.8 and states: “Fixed a bug where the game shuts down when losing connection to the controller while playing Castle Circuit in KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX.” The same notes mention fixes for a video-streaming-related shutdown, an event-skip volume reset, a Hollow Bastion control lock, and a repeated-magic sound-effect volume issue.
Those notes describe the Epic build named by the publisher. Do not assume that every listed fix, version number, or release timing maps directly to the current Steam build. On Steam, first allow the client to finish any pending update before treating a reproducible issue as a missing patch.

Japanese and International versions
Steam presents Japanese and International versions separately and warns: “NOTICE: Save data cannot be transferred between the Japanese and International versions.” Select the intended version and language before creating a long-term save. A later switch is not a safe way to change versions if you need to keep that progress.
A practical setup checklist
- Confirm that you installed the 1.5+2.5 collection rather than a different Kingdom Hearts PC release.
- Check for 64-bit Windows 10 version 1909 or later, DirectX 11 support, 60 GB free storage, and at least 4 GB RAM.
- Connect a DualShock- or DualSense-category controller by USB first; move to Bluetooth after wired input works.
- Choose 1280×720 at 30 FPS near minimum hardware, or 1920×1080 at 60 FPS near recommended hardware.
- Lower resolution before experimenting with other graphics controls when stutter appears.
- Apply refresh-rate, VSync, or frame-rate changes one at a time and restart or return to the title screen if necessary.
- Choose Japanese or International before making saves.
- Keep controller firmware, Windows, graphics drivers, and the Steam installation updated, while recognizing that general driver updates are troubleshooting steps rather than guarantees of a fix.
Bottom line for a stable PC setup
For the least complicated configuration, use a DualShock- or DualSense-category controller over USB, launch the game with the pad already connected, and begin at the official target that matches your PC: 1280×720/30 FPS for minimum-class hardware or 1920×1080/60 FPS for recommended-class hardware. Lower resolution and choose a stable cap when stutter appears; do not chase an unsupported 120 FPS claim. Keep the Japanese/International save warning in mind, and separate Steam troubleshooting from fixes documented only for the Epic build.
