Start with Kingdom Hearts, then play Kingdom Hearts II, and finish with Kingdom Hearts III. That is the clearest route if you are choosing among the three numbered games and want the story to unfold in its intended chapter order. The wider series includes several important stories between those releases, but you do not need to begin with a spin-off just to understand which numbered game comes first.
The practical complication is access. Current collections bundle the numbered games with additional entries, while the Switch 2 listing identifies some of those entries as HD cutscene compilations rather than complete playable games. The physical all-in-one edition also requires an internet connection and an additional download, so the package format matters as much as the title list.

The short answer: play Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, then Kingdom Hearts III
- Kingdom Hearts establishes Sora, the Keyblade, his friends, the Disney and Pixar worlds, the Heartless and the series’ central conflict with darkness.
- Kingdom Hearts II is the next numbered chapter and assumes that the first game’s characters, relationships and major events are familiar.
- Kingdom Hearts III belongs at the end of this three-game route. Starting there gives you the latest numbered entry without the setup that makes its returning characters and story stakes meaningful.
This is an editorial recommendation for newcomers, not a claim from Square Enix that every player must follow one universal order. If your goal is simply to sample modern action gameplay, you could choose differently. If your goal is to understand the numbered story, I → II → III minimizes confusion.

What each numbered game is doing in the story
| Game | Where it belongs | What you should know before starting | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kingdom Hearts | The beginning of the numbered route | Nothing beyond the basic premise | You want the clearest introduction to Sora and the series’ world |
| Kingdom Hearts II | The second numbered chapter | The first game’s cast, terminology and ending | You have finished the opening chapter and want the direct sequel |
| Kingdom Hearts III | The finale of this three-game path | At minimum, the events of I and II; more background improves the experience | You want the latest numbered entry after building the necessary context |
Kingdom Hearts: start here if you are new
The first game is the safest starting point because it introduces the series’ vocabulary instead of asking you to learn it from references and flashbacks. You meet Sora and his friends, learn what the Keyblade represents and travel through worlds drawn from Disney and Pixar stories while confronting the Heartless and darkness.

Nintendo summarizes the premise this way: “The main story follows Sora, a Keyblade wielder, as he and his friends travel to iconic Disney and Pixar worlds and take on the Heartless and defeat darkness in each world.” That description is useful because it explains the series’ recurring structure without requiring prior knowledge of its later mythology.
Kingdom Hearts II: play it after the first game
Kingdom Hearts II is the natural follow-up, not an alternative introduction. Its emotional impact depends on recognizing people, conflicts and consequences established in the first game. Playing it second also gives you a stable reference point before you encounter the side stories that expand the timeline.
If you have already completed the first game years ago, a recap can refresh names and events. You do not need to interrupt the numbered route with every other release before starting II, unless your personal priority is a complete chronology rather than the simplest path.
Kingdom Hearts III: save it for last among the numbered games
Kingdom Hearts III is the third numbered entry, so it is the least forgiving starting point for a newcomer who cares about the plot. The wider series places several stories between II and III, which means the game can contain references that are not explained fully by the two earlier numbered titles alone.

That does not make III a bad game to own first; it makes it a poor first game for understanding the whole narrative. Treat it as the destination of your numbered-game route, then decide whether you want the intervening stories before you begin.
Why the series is more complicated than three games
The three numbered games are only part of the Kingdom Hearts story. Square Enix’s current all-in-one structure groups the releases into three collections: HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. Together, they provide the main numbered games plus several connected stories and video presentations.
This matters because “play Kingdom Hearts 1, 2 and 3” can mean two different things:
- Numbered route: play I, II and III in that order for the simplest introduction.
- Fuller story route: add the connected entries between those chapters, accepting that some are presented as movies or cutscene compilations depending on the platform.
What is included in the current collections
HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX
- KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX
- Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
- KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX
- Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX
- Kingdom Hearts Re:coded
The collection title includes six named entries, but the way they are delivered differs by platform. On Nintendo’s Switch 2 contents list, 358/2 Days and Re:coded are identified as HD cutscene compilations. In other words, seeing a title in the bundle does not automatically mean you receive a complete playable version of that entry on that system.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
- Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –
- Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD
- Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover
This collection fills in more of the material leading toward the third numbered game. It is the natural next purchase for someone who has completed I and II and wants more context before III, but it is not required for deciding which numbered game comes first.
KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind
- Kingdom Hearts III
- Re Mind downloadable content
Re Mind is packaged with the current collection listing as additional content for III. It should be treated as an add-on to the third game, not as a replacement for the earlier chapters.
Two sensible play plans
Plan A: the three-game introduction
- Play KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX.
- Play KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX.
- Play KINGDOM HEARTS III.
Choose this plan if you want the numbered story with the least friction. It answers the literal question “What order do you play them in?” without requiring you to commit to every release in the franchise.
Plan B: a fuller story catch-up
- Start with KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX.
- Continue with Re:Chain of Memories.
- Watch or play 358/2 Days according to the version available on your platform.
- Play KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX.
- Play Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX.
- Watch or play Re:coded according to the platform’s format.
- Play Dream Drop Distance HD.
- Play 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –.
- Watch χ Back Cover.
- Play KINGDOM HEARTS III, then its Re Mind content.
This is a practical story-oriented sequence based on how the official collections group the entries. It is not the only possible chronology, and it is longer and more demanding than the numbered route. The Switch 2 presentation is especially important: two entries in the 1.5+2.5 list are supplied as HD cutscene compilations, so your experience will not consist entirely of playable games.

Which route should you choose?
If you have never played Kingdom Hearts
Choose Plan A. It gives you the series’ basic language and the three numbered milestones before you decide whether you want every connecting story.
If you played I and II years ago
Replay or recap the first two numbered games, then use the 2.8 collection to fill in material you missed before starting III. This avoids beginning III cold while also avoiding a commitment to every entry immediately.
If you care most about complete story context
Choose Plan B and check the format of each title on your system. The distinction between a playable release and an HD cutscene compilation affects how much time and interaction each entry provides.
If you only want the latest numbered game
You can buy the collection containing III and Re Mind, but expect unexplained references if you skip I, II and the intervening stories. The purchase decision is separate from the recommended order: owning III first is possible, but playing it first is not the clearest way to learn the story.
Best Value

Current collection, platform and download details
Square Enix’s current collection page lists the individual offerings across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Availability and format can vary by region, so verify the listing for your country and the exact system you own.
The North American store listing identifies a physical KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] edition for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, with an October 8, 2026 release date. The same listing says the physical version requires an internet connection and an additional data download. Do not assume that the disc or cartridge contains every playable component for offline use.
| Purchase question | What the official listings establish |
|---|---|
| Is there an all-in-one package? | Yes. It combines HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. |
| Which current systems are represented across the collection offerings? | Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Epic Games Store are listed; regional support can differ. |
| Does the physical edition work entirely offline? | No assumption is safe: the North American listing requires an internet connection and additional data download. |
| Are all included names full games? | Not on every platform. Nintendo labels 358/2 Days and Re:coded as HD cutscene compilations for Switch 2. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with III because it is the newest: release recency is not the same as story accessibility.
- Assuming every collection entry is playable: check whether your platform supplies a game or a cutscene compilation.
- Treating the numbered route as the complete franchise: I, II and III are the simplest route, not the whole story.
- Buying a physical bundle without checking download requirements: plan for the required internet connection and additional data.
- Expecting a definitive difficulty or length ranking: those comparisons vary by player and edition, and the official collection information does not establish a universal winner.
How significant is the series?
Square Enix reported more than 38 million units in global package shipments and digital sales in 2025. That is a cumulative company figure for the Kingdom Hearts series, not a sales total for the three numbered games alone. It explains why a newcomer encounters such a large library, but it does not change the simplest starting advice.
