Once those conditions are met, accept the opening quest “A New World to Explore” in Old Sharlayan. You do not need to finish every job, raid, role quest, or optional side quest.

Dawntrail requirements at a glance
Use this checklist before you spend time searching for the starting quest. Each item controls a different kind of access: ownership unlocks the expansion, story completion unlocks the narrative handoff, and the combat-job level unlocks the quest itself.

What you must own: Dawntrail on the correct account
Dawntrail is a separately registered expansion. The Square Enix requirements identify a Dawntrail product key as necessary before the Dawntrail main scenario can proceed. Endwalker ownership gives you access to Endwalker content; it does not, by itself, register Dawntrail.

Match the purchase to your platform
Final Fantasy XIV licenses are organized around the platform and service account used to play. Before buying or redeeming anything, identify whether your character is being accessed through the Windows, Steam, Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S version. The available instructions establish the registration procedure for each group, but they do not establish that a license purchased on one platform transfers to another.
- Windows, Steam, and Mac: redeem the Dawntrail registration code for the service account that contains your character. A code intended for a different platform or account will not satisfy the requirement for the account you are using.
- PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5: purchasing the full Dawntrail product through the console store automatically registers the full version to the linked service account.
- Xbox Series X|S: purchasing the full product through the Xbox store automatically registers the full version to the linked service account.
Do not confuse a preorder bonus with the expansion license
A preorder bonus code is separate from the full Dawntrail registration code. Redeeming a preorder item can grant its associated bonus, but it does not replace registering the expansion itself. If the account page or launcher still shows Dawntrail as unregistered, look for the full registration code or the completed console purchase rather than trying the preorder code again.
How to verify ownership before troubleshooting quests
- Sign in to the Square Enix service account that you use for the character.
- Check the account’s registered-game or platform entitlements and confirm that Dawntrail appears for the platform on which you are launching the game.
- On Windows, Steam, or Mac, confirm that the complete registration code was redeemed, not only a preorder code.
- On PlayStation or Xbox, confirm that the purchase was made on the console account linked to the correct Final Fantasy XIV service account.
- Restart the launcher or console session after a recent registration, then check the quest requirements again.
The official instructions describe these platform procedures but do not promise cross-platform license transfer. If you regularly switch platforms, verify the entitlement on each platform instead of assuming that one purchase covers all versions.
Story requirement: finish Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario
The Dawntrail opening is not available immediately after Endwalker’s original finale. The prerequisite shown for “A New World to Explore” is Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario. In practical terms, continue through the Endwalker quests released after the base expansion story until the sequence reaches its final handoff.
Why “The Coming Dawn” matters
The level-90 quest “The Coming Dawn” is listed as the prior quest leading into Dawntrail’s opening sequence. If your journal shows that this quest, or the post-Endwalker quests that lead to it, is incomplete, the Dawntrail starter will remain locked even when your character is level 90 and the expansion is registered.

How to check your story position
- Open the Main Scenario Quest tracker or journal.
- Look for the most recent Endwalker post-expansion quest you completed.
- Search the quest list for “The Coming Dawn” and inspect whether it is completed, current, or still unavailable because an earlier quest is unfinished.
- Follow the highlighted main-scenario objective in order; do not jump to a Dawntrail marker on a different character or world.
Characters can have different story progress even when they share an account. Check the character you intend to take into Dawntrail, not merely the account’s highest-level character.
Optional content is not part of this gate
The documented opening prerequisite is the post-expansion main scenario. Nothing in the listed requirement says that you must complete Endwalker raids, trials, role quests, tribal quests, relic steps, crafting stories, or every side quest before starting Dawntrail. Those activities may add context or rewards, but they are not established requirements for accepting the opening quest. Do not delay the expansion solely to clear optional content unless a particular quest in your own journal explicitly marks it as required.
Level requirement: one level 90 combat job
You need a level 90 Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic to start the Dawntrail main scenario. The requirement applies to the job you use to accept the quest; it is not a demand to level every combat job, crafter, gatherer, or alternate character.
What qualifies
- Any qualifying Disciple of War job at level 90 or higher.
- Any qualifying Disciple of Magic job at level 90 or higher.
- A single qualifying job is enough, even if your other jobs are lower level.
What does not qualify by itself
- A level 90 Disciple of the Hand or Disciple of the Land.
- A character whose only level 90 job is a limited job. The database requirement is expressed as Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic and excludes limited jobs.
- A level below 90, even if the expansion is registered and the Endwalker story is complete.
To check quickly, open the character or armoury screen and identify the level of the job currently equipped. If it is below 90, switch to a qualifying job that has reached 90 before looking for the Dawntrail quest.
Where to begin: “A New World to Explore”
The official database names “A New World to Explore” as the Dawntrail main-scenario opening quest and lists Old Sharlayan as its quest location. The quest should become available after the ownership, story, and level checks all pass.

- Open the map and quest tracker and look for the Dawntrail main-scenario marker.
- Speak to the quest giver for “A New World to Explore.”
- Read the quest acceptance window and confirm that the objective advances into the Dawntrail storyline.
If the marker is missing, use the diagnostic sequence below rather than abandoning unrelated quests at random. A later patch may move a quest giver or alter the displayed location, so compare your game’s current journal with the latest official database entry.

If you want to skip earlier story
Square Enix sells optional Tales of Adventure scenario items. A relevant item can flag a corresponding title complete and move a character to the start of a later storyline. This is a shortcut for players who explicitly do not want to play the earlier quests, not a replacement for Dawntrail ownership or the level requirement for the next main-scenario quest.
What a scenario skip does not change
- You still need Dawntrail registered to the service account and platform you use.
- You still need the required level for the subsequent main-scenario quest.
- The item can alter story flags and character progression, so read its eligibility, contents, and effects before purchase.
Use a skip only after deciding that losing the normal story progression is acceptable. If you want the narrative context, completing the Endwalker post-expansion quests normally is the safer route.
Recommended preparation order
The following order prevents wasted leveling or code troubleshooting:
- Confirm the platform: identify the client and service account on which the character is played.
- Register Dawntrail: redeem the full code on Windows, Steam, or Mac, or complete the full console purchase on PlayStation or Xbox.
- Check the combat job: make sure at least one Disciple of War or Magic is level 90 or above.
- Finish the correct story segment: continue Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario until the chain reaches “The Coming Dawn.”
- Travel to Old Sharlayan: search for “A New World to Explore” and accept it when all three gates are satisfied.
- Recheck after patches: if a marker or location differs, consult the current Lodestone quest entry because later updates can change quest presentation.
Do you need to buy Dawntrail if you already own Endwalker?
Yes, Dawntrail must be registered separately to access its expansion content. Endwalker ownership and Dawntrail registration are distinct entitlements. Having completed Endwalker’s story and reached level 90 does not grant Dawntrail automatically.

Can you start Dawntrail immediately after the Endwalker finale?
No. The documented prerequisite is Endwalker’s post-expansion main scenario, not only the original Endwalker finale. Continue the post-expansion quest chain until the game recognizes the handoff to “A New World to Explore.”
What level do you need?
The opening quest requires a level 90 Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic. You do not need every job at level 90, and a level 90 crafting or gathering job is not the qualifying requirement.
Can you use a different platform’s Dawntrail license?
