Are Treasury Notes a Good Alternative to High-Yield Savings Accounts and CDs? A Practical 2026 Guide

Treasury notes can suit money you can invest for years, but they are not emergency savings. Compare after-tax YTM, APY, access rules and early-sale risk before choosing.

Sometimes—but Treasury notes are not a substitute for emergency savings. They can fit money you can leave invested for two to 10 years, especially when a fixed coupon and exemption from state and local income tax matter. A high-yield savings account is generally better suited to money you may need without selling an investment, while a CD may be simpler when its fixed term matches your schedule.

The right choice depends on the same-date, after-tax yield, your time horizon, and how quickly you might need the money. Treasury notes can be sold before maturity, but the sale occurs at the prevailing market price and may produce less than face value. The comparison below explains when that trade-off is worthwhile.

What a Treasury note is

A Treasury note is a marketable U.S. Treasury security with a fixed interest rate set at auction. Available maturities are two, three, five, seven, and 10 years. The minimum purchase is $100, and interest is paid every six months. The coupon rate remains fixed for the life of the note.

That fixed coupon does not by itself tell you what return you will earn. The price paid at auction or in the secondary market determines the note’s yield to maturity (YTM), which incorporates the purchase price, coupon payments, and amount received at maturity.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Coupon rate versus yield to maturity

The coupon is the note’s contractual interest rate applied to its face value. YTM is the annualized return implied by the price you pay if you hold the note until maturity and receive all scheduled cash flows. TreasuryDirect explains the price relationship this way:

  • When YTM is higher than the coupon rate, the note trades below face value.
  • When YTM equals the coupon rate, the note trades at face value.
  • When YTM is lower than the coupon rate, the note trades above face value.

For a comparison with a savings account or CD, use YTM rather than the coupon alone. A note purchased at a premium or discount can have a YTM that differs materially from its stated coupon.

How the three choices differ

Feature Treasury note High-yield savings account CD
Time commitment Two-, three-, five-, seven-, or 10-year maturity Usually no fixed maturity; account terms vary by institution Fixed term; maturity and early-withdrawal conditions depend on the product
Return measure YTM based on price and fixed coupon; interest paid semiannually Current APY, including any balance tiers or conditions Advertised APY for the stated term
Rate behavior Coupon is fixed after issuance Rate may change, subject to the institution’s terms Rate is generally fixed for the agreed term
Access before the end date Sell at the market price; TreasuryDirect holdings have a 45-day hold before transfer for sale Verify withdrawal, transfer, and account-access rules Verify maturity rules and any early-withdrawal conditions
Tax treatment Interest is federally taxable but exempt from state and local income tax Interest is generally taxable Interest is generally taxable
Protection and insurance U.S. Treasury marketable security; the material available here does not quantify a default-risk comparison Confirm whether the institution is FDIC-insured and review applicable coverage rules Confirm institution insurance and read the account-specific terms

The table is a framework, not a live rate comparison. Account yields, eligibility, minimum balances, and access rules change by institution. A Treasury note’s YTM also changes with the auction price or secondary-market price.

When a Treasury note can be the better fit

You have a defined multi-year horizon

A note is most logical when you can identify a date at least two years away when the money will no longer be needed. Matching the maturity to that date can reduce the chance that you will have to sell during an unfavorable market move.

State or local income tax is significant

Treasury-note interest is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local income taxes. That advantage can improve the note’s after-tax result for someone in a state or locality with an income tax. The federal tax still applies, so the exemption does not make the interest tax-free.

You value a fixed coupon

The coupon is set at auction and does not change during the note’s life. That predictability can be useful when you want scheduled semiannual interest rather than a savings-account rate that may move over time.

You can tolerate market-price risk

A Treasury note is marketable, but marketability is not the same as a guaranteed exit price. If prevailing yields rise after you buy, the note’s market price can fall. You may receive less than face value if you sell then. Holding to maturity avoids the need to accept that fluctuating sale price, but it requires staying invested for the remaining term.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a high-yield savings account is usually more suitable

Emergency money must remain readily accessible

Emergency reserves are intended for uncertain expenses, not a known maturity date. A savings account avoids the need to sell a security during a market decline. You still need to check the institution’s current withdrawal, transfer, and access terms; those rules were not uniform in the available material.

Your time horizon is unknown

If you do not know whether you will need the money next month, next year, or later, locking in a multi-year security creates a mismatch. A savings account generally has no fixed maturity, although its rate can change.

You want a simple rate comparison

For a savings account, compare the current APY and the conditions attached to it. Check whether the quoted APY requires a particular balance, has tiers, or depends on eligibility. Do not compare a promotional or conditional APY with an unconditional Treasury YTM without stating the difference.

When a CD may be the better fit

The CD term matches your date

A CD can be easier to evaluate when its fixed term lines up with the date you expect to use the money. Compare a CD with a Treasury note of a similar duration rather than comparing a short CD with a 10-year note.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to avoid secondary-market pricing

With a CD, the institution’s maturity and early-withdrawal provisions determine how you access the money before the end of the term. With a Treasury note, early access means a market sale and a price that can be above or below face value. Neither option should be treated as instantly interchangeable without reading its terms.

You are comfortable with taxable interest

Bank and CD interest are generally taxable interest. If you live in a state with an income tax, the Treasury exemption from state and local tax can change the after-tax comparison even when the nominal rates look similar.

How early sale of a Treasury note works

You can sell a Treasury note before maturity, but the process and price matter.

  1. Check where the note is held. A security held in TreasuryDirect cannot be sold immediately after purchase.
  2. Wait through the TreasuryDirect holding period. TreasuryDirect requires a 45-day hold before a marketable security can be transferred for sale.
  3. Transfer it for sale. TreasuryDirect says the security must be transferred to a bank, broker, or dealer before the sale.
  4. Review the prevailing market price. The sale price reflects current market yields, not necessarily the $100 face-value minimum or the amount originally paid.
  5. Account for the result. If yields have risen, the price may be below face value; if yields have fallen, it may be above face value. Selling early can therefore produce a gain or loss relative to your purchase price.

The 45-day rule does not mean a note can never be sold. It means a TreasuryDirect-held note cannot be transferred for sale until that period has passed. A note purchased or held through another channel has its own transfer and sale procedures.

Taxes: compare what you keep, not just what is quoted

According to IRS Topic No. 403, Treasury interest is federally taxable and exempt from state and local income taxes. The same IRS guidance identifies bank-account and CD interest as examples of taxable interest.

For a rough comparison, apply your marginal federal tax rate to each product’s taxable interest. Then include state and local tax for savings-account and CD interest when applicable, while excluding those taxes from Treasury interest. Your actual tax calculation can differ because of filing status, deductions, credits, other income, and local rules.

A simple planning formula is:

  • Taxable deposit after-tax return: quoted APY multiplied by one minus the applicable federal, state, and local marginal tax rates.
  • Treasury after-tax return: YTM multiplied by one minus the applicable federal marginal tax rate, with no state or local income-tax reduction.

Use the same assumptions for all three products. Also check whether the quoted figure is an APY, a coupon, or a YTM; those measures are not interchangeable.

What the March 2026 deposit-rate figures do—and do not—show

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation reported March 16, 2026 national average rates of 0.39% for savings accounts and 1.52% for 12-month CDs. The FDIC says its savings-rate average uses a $2,500 product tier, while its CD averages represent $10,000 and $100,000 tiers.

Those figures are historical national averages, not the best offers available to an individual and not a same-day October 2026 market snapshot. They also are not live Treasury-note yields. The available material does not establish an October 2026 auction yield for any Treasury-note maturity or a current high-yield savings offer.

Therefore, you cannot conclude from those FDIC averages that Treasury notes currently beat high-yield savings accounts or CDs. For a live decision, collect the latest auction result for the maturity you are considering and actual eligible account offers on the same date.

A step-by-step comparison you can use

1. Define the job of the money

Write down whether the money is an emergency reserve, a near-term purchase fund, or a longer-term allocation. If an unexpected bill could require the money, start with access requirements rather than yield.

2. Set the usable time horizon

Choose the date by which the full balance may be needed. Eliminate any Treasury-note maturity that extends beyond a date you cannot tolerate, unless you are prepared to sell at a market price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Gather same-date figures

Record the Treasury note’s maturity, auction price, coupon, and YTM. Record the savings account’s APY and conditions. Record the CD’s APY, term, minimum, and early-withdrawal provisions. Put the date beside every number.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

4. Normalize the return measure

Compare YTM with APY for similar holding periods. Do not substitute a Treasury coupon for YTM, and do not compare a 12-month CD with a 10-year note without acknowledging the different commitments.

5. Adjust for taxes

Apply your federal rate to all taxable interest. Add state and local tax to deposit interest where relevant, but not to Treasury interest. If your tax situation is unusual, treat the result as an estimate and consult a qualified tax professional.

6. Stress-test access

Ask what happens if you need the money early. For a TreasuryDirect note, include the 45-day transfer restriction and the possibility of a sale below face value. For a savings account or CD, read the institution’s current access and early-withdrawal terms.

7. Decide only after the trade-off is visible

Choose the Treasury note when its after-tax return and fixed-coupon characteristics justify the maturity and sale-price risk. Choose the savings account when access and flexibility are more important. Choose the CD when a fixed institutional term fits and its after-tax return is competitive.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the coupon the return. The coupon is fixed, but YTM depends on price.
  • Using different dates. Savings APYs, CD offers, and Treasury yields can change; stale figures can reverse the comparison.
  • Ignoring taxes. A lower pre-tax Treasury yield can be competitive after the state-tax exemption, while federal tax still reduces it.
  • Treating marketable as cash. A note can be sold, but the price is not guaranteed to equal face value.
  • Assuming TreasuryDirect allows immediate sale. The 45-day hold and transfer requirement apply to TreasuryDirect-held marketable securities.
  • Assuming FDIC insurance applies to Treasury notes. Verify the protection structure of each product separately; the available material does not establish FDIC coverage for Treasury securities.
  • Comparing unlike terms. A liquid savings account, a one-year CD, and a 10-year note solve different planning problems.
  • Relying on national averages as an offer. FDIC averages describe broad historical data and do not guarantee what any bank will pay you.

Decision examples by goal

Emergency fund

Use an account designed for reliable access and verify its withdrawal and transfer rules. A multi-year Treasury note introduces a sale decision and possible market loss at exactly the time an emergency may occur.

Known expense several years away

A Treasury note can be considered if the maturity is compatible with the expense date and the after-tax YTM compares favorably with a similar-term CD. Keep enough flexibility elsewhere so an early sale is not your only option.

High state-tax location

Calculate the state and local tax saved on Treasury interest. Compare that after-tax result with taxable savings and CD interest, using the same federal assumptions and dated rates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uncertain purchase date

Favor flexibility until the timing is clearer. A savings account’s lack of a fixed maturity may outweigh a higher quoted return that requires holding a note or CD for a set period.

Bottom line

Treasury notes can be a good alternative to a high-yield savings account or CD for money that can stay invested for years, particularly for investors who value a fixed coupon and the federal securities’ state and local tax exemption. They are not a universal replacement for emergency savings. Before buying, compare the note’s same-date YTM with actual account offers after taxes, match the maturity to your spending timeline, and understand that early sale requires a secondary-market transaction at a potentially unfavorable price.
