Kia EV4 GT: Is This the Electric Hot Hatch’s Best Performance-Practicality Balance?

Yes—if you want one electric car to cover commuting, family duties and fast back-road driving, the Kia EV4 GT makes a persuasive case. It is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive five-door with genuinely rapid acceleration, adjustable chassis software and a comfortable ride, yet it retains the usable cabin expected of a family hatchback. The compromises are equally clear: its front-biased balance can produce understeer, the brakes are not flawless under repeated hard use, and 400-volt charging is modest beside newer 800-volt rivals. Independent mixed-road testing puts practical range at roughly 200–250 miles, rather than the laboratory figure.

What the Kia EV4 GT is—and who it suits

The EV4 GT is the performance flagship of Kia’s EV4 range. Unlike a cosmetic trim package, it combines two electric motors, four-wheel drive, larger wheels, upgraded brakes and software that changes how the car responds to throttle, steering and road surfaces. The result is a hot hatch that prioritises breadth of ability over an uncompromising track focus.

That positioning matters. A driver who wants the sharpest possible electric cornering tool may find the GT less agile than the most aggressive performance EVs. A driver who needs a quiet, comfortable five-seat car that can deliver immediate pace on demand gets a much more convincing proposition. Stuff’s Rob Clymo called it “the ideal sweet spot”, while Auto Express concluded that the EV4 GT makes the most sense of Kia’s three new GT models.

How fast is the EV4 GT in everyday driving?

The headline acceleration is a claimed 0–62 mph in 5.6 seconds. Its 288 bhp and 468 Nm arrive through two motors, so the car can deploy traction without waiting for a gearbox to select a ratio. In normal traffic, the useful quality is not just the launch figure but the clean, repeatable surge when joining a motorway or overtaking.

Auto Express describes the layout as front-biased: the rear motor is called upon mainly when traction is limited. That calibration helps efficiency and gives the car a predictable feel, but it also explains why the GT is not a rear-drive-style drift machine. In tight bends, the stronger front motor can overwhelm the front tyres and create understeer if the driver enters too quickly.

Modes and driver controls

  • GT mode: firms the adaptive dampers, sharpens throttle response and adds steering weight.
  • My Mode: allows separate adjustment of damping, steering and throttle, so a driver can combine a relaxed ride with a more responsive accelerator.
  • Virtual Gear Shift: simulates six sequential ratios and lets the driver shift with steering-wheel paddles.
  • Optional active sound: adds an artificial aural layer for drivers who want more theatre from an otherwise quiet powertrain.

Virtual Gear Shift does not make the car mechanically faster; it changes the rhythm of acceleration and gives the driver something to manage. Autocar found that this feature increases involvement, especially on a winding road. It can also be switched off when smooth, uninterrupted electric thrust is preferable.

Does it handle like a proper hot hatch?

The GT’s chassis technology is more sophisticated than its front-biased character might suggest. Kia’s Preview Electronic Control Suspension anticipates changes in the road surface and adjusts damping before the wheels reach them. Dynamic Torque Vectoring brakes an inside wheel and sends more drive to the outside wheel to help the car turn.

Kia’s brochure says the preview system predicts the road surface and driving environment ahead to maintain a stable, comfortable ride. In practice, the benefit is composure over imperfect roads rather than an artificial sense of invulnerability. Top Gear found strong grip and a comfortable ride, including in the firmest setting.

Where the balance falls short

Neither the torque-vectoring software nor the adaptive dampers completely remove the limitations of the front axle. Autocar judged body control, agility and cornering balance not to be class-leading. Tight second-gear-style bends expose the front-heavy response: ask for power too early and the nose pushes wide, requiring a lift or a small steering correction.

That is a handling characteristic, not a safety defect. It means the quickest way through a bend is to manage entry speed and feed in power progressively, rather than treating the GT as a rear-drive performance car. Drivers who prefer a stable, confidence-building front end may find this easy to live with; those seeking playful rotation may not.

Braking performance

The GT receives upgraded 325 mm brakes. Top Gear nevertheless reported deep pedal travel and limited ultimate stopping power during hard braking. For normal road use, the pedal remains usable, but repeated high-speed stops are the area where this car feels less convincing than its acceleration suggests. Allowing extra margin on unfamiliar roads and monitoring brake feel after sustained descending or spirited driving is sensible.

Is the EV4 GT comfortable and practical enough for daily use?

Yes. The car remains a five-door, five-seat family hatchback rather than a stripped-out performance special. Reviewers describe the cabin as roomy and usable, with a composed ride that works on ordinary urban streets as well as faster roads. The GT mode’s firmer damping is available when you want sharper responses, while the adaptive hardware prevents the car from becoming permanently harsh.

Cabin and rear-seat usability

The practical advantage is consistency: the same car that carries passengers and their everyday luggage can deliver strong acceleration without a complicated driving routine. A five-door layout gives rear passengers independent access, and the five-seat configuration preserves the flexibility expected from a family car. The available data does not establish boot volume, rear legroom measurements or a detailed equipment list, so those should be checked against the specification for your market before ordering.

Ride quality and noise

Top Gear’s assessment is notable because it found the ride comfortable even with the firmest setting selected. That supports the EV4 GT’s wider brief: you can use its chassis controls to change response without accepting a punishing ride every day. Electric drivetrain silence also makes the optional active sound a choice rather than a necessity; leave it off for relaxed travel, or use it when the simulated shift points add engagement.

What range can you expect in the real world?

Kia’s official brochure lists a 425 km combined test-cycle range for the 81.4 kWh battery. That is a certified laboratory result and should not be read as a guaranteed motorway distance.

Autocar’s mixed-road testing suggested approximately 200–250 miles in real-world use. The spread reflects the factors that matter most with a performance EV: speed, temperature, hills, passenger load, wheel choice and how often the driver uses the available power. The 20-inch wheels and all-wheel-drive hardware favour grip and response, but they can also increase consumption compared with a less powerful EV4.

Planning around the range

  • Use the lower end of the 200–250-mile estimate when planning cold-weather motorway journeys or when arriving with a generous battery reserve matters.
  • Treat the upper end as a mixed-use expectation, not a promise for sustained high-speed driving.
  • Build charging stops around destination facilities when possible; the GT’s charging ceiling makes a short top-up less dramatic than it would be in an 800V car.

How quickly does it charge?

The EV4 GT uses a 400V electrical architecture and accepts up to 128 kW of DC power. That is adequate for routine public charging but a clear technical compromise against newer performance EVs designed around 800V systems. Peak power is also conditional: battery temperature, state of charge and the charger itself determine how long the car stays near its maximum.

For home charging, the available data does not specify an onboard AC rate or a market-specific wallbox package, so those details need confirmation from a UK or German Kia retailer. The important buying question is whether your normal journeys can be covered by overnight charging; if they can, the slower public-charging ceiling may rarely matter.

Choose the EV4 GT when balance matters most

The Kia is the logical choice if one vehicle must handle school runs, commuting and fast weekend drives. It offers enough grip and acceleration to feel special without demanding a stiff suspension setup or a compromised cabin.

Choose the Alpine when compact size is the priority

The A290 is smaller, so it is the relevant direction for buyers who value a more compact footprint. The available evidence does not establish a like-for-like range, charging or performance advantage, so a direct purchase decision requires checking the exact regional versions.

Choose the Ioniq 5 N for maximum aggression

The Ioniq 5 N represents the more extreme end of the comparison. It is the better conceptual match for a driver who prioritises track energy and dramatic performance behaviour over the EV4 GT’s compromise between comfort and usability. That does not make it automatically better for daily family travel.

Is nearly £50,000 justified?

In the UK, the starting price is £49,345, while Autocar’s tested example was £49,995. That places the EV4 GT in a difficult but understandable position: buyers are paying for dual-motor hardware, adaptive preview suspension, torque-vectoring software, large wheels and the practical body, not just a higher power output.

The value case is strongest when you would otherwise need two cars—a comfortable family EV and a weekend performance car. The case weakens if your priorities are ultra-fast charging, maximum motorway range or repeated track use. The German figure of €57,840, with deliveries reported as planned for July 2026, shows why local taxes, equipment and launch timing must be checked before comparing prices across countries.

What are the main drawbacks to consider before buying?

  • Front-biased handling: tight corners can expose understeer, limiting the playful balance some hot-hatch drivers expect.
  • Braking under stress: deep pedal travel and limited ultimate stopping power were reported despite the 325 mm upgraded brakes.
  • Charging speed: the 400V system and 128 kW ceiling are ordinary rather than class-leading for a performance EV.
  • Range variability: the official test-cycle result and the 200–250-mile mixed-road estimate describe different conditions; motorway and winter use can fall toward the lower end.
  • Equipment differences: pricing and delivery timing vary by country, and the available data does not establish every market’s standard equipment.

Verdict: a fast family EV with unusually few compromises

The Kia EV4 GT succeeds because its performance features serve everyday driving instead of overwhelming it. The dual-motor system supplies rapid, dependable traction; the adaptive suspension keeps the ride civilised; and the software modes let you decide how much effort the car should demand from you. Its front-biased cornering balance, brake limitations and slower charging prevent it from being the definitive performance EV, but those are manageable trade-offs for a five-seat car that remains comfortable and engaging.

Autocar’s conclusion captures the idea well: the EV4 GT “never feels like too much performance car; not for any particular road or journey.” If your definition of a great electric hot hatch is usable pace rather than maximum track aggression, this Kia is one of the most coherent choices in its price range.
