Kernel-Level Anti-Cheat: Why Its Access, Startup Rules, and Controls Matter

Kernel-level anti-cheat is not one uniform arrangement: privilege, startup behavior, removal options, and Windows requirements vary by product. Here’s how to weigh the tradeoffs.

Kernel-level anti-cheat gives a game’s protection software elevated access to Windows, and some products may start before the game does. Studios argue that this helps detect cheats that operate at the same privilege level. That rationale is meaningful, but it does not settle whether a particular product should run at startup, what it inspects, or how much control players should have. Those details vary by product and system.

Why do some anti-cheat systems use kernel access?

Windows programs ordinarily run in user mode, with operating-system limits on what they can inspect or change. Kernel-mode software runs with greater privilege. Riot and Electronic Arts say that user-mode anti-cheat can be outmatched by cheats operating in the kernel: a lower-privilege program may be unable to see or stop activity happening above it.

Riot’s Security Team put the argument plainly in an April 17, 2020 statement: “If anti-cheat software is only run in user-mode, its capabilities would be compromised by a cheat running at a higher privilege level.” That is Riot’s explanation of its threat model, not proof that every competitive game needs a kernel driver.

Riot’s 2026 explanation adds an early-loading concern: a vulnerable driver could load before the game, enable a cheat, and then disappear. Riot says Vanguard starts early to address this “Who Loads First?” problem. EA also says kernel cheats can be invisible to user-mode anti-cheat and describes its product as an in-house kernel-mode system. These are the companies’ technical rationales; they should be evaluated as product-specific claims rather than universal requirements.

Does kernel-level mean the driver is always running?

No. Privilege level and runtime are different questions. A kernel driver might load at startup, on demand, or only while a protected game is running. The practical details depend on the product, its version, and—where offered—the PC’s eligibility.

Product When the vendor says it runs On-demand or removal options
Riot Vanguard Riot’s 2020 architecture statement says the driver starts at system startup. Riot’s current support article says eligible systems can use Pre-Check to run it on demand. Eligible systems can use Pre-Check. Riot says Vanguard can be uninstalled; games that require it will not run without it.
EA anticheat EA says it runs only while a game that includes EA anticheat protection is running. EA says it can be manually uninstalled and is automatically removed when all EA games requiring it are removed.

These runtime descriptions are vendor statements, not independent audits of what happens on every PC. Riot’s 2020 statement also says the Vanguard driver itself does not send computer information. Treat that as Riot’s description of the driver, not as a broader guarantee about all game, account, or anti-cheat data processing.

What does kernel access establish—and what does it not?

Kernel access establishes that software has elevated operating-system privileges. By itself, it does not prove that the software collects every file, abuses privacy, or is malware. At the same time, greater privilege raises the stakes of software security and makes clear disclosure, control, and independent scrutiny important.

A 2024 peer-reviewed ARES conference paper by Christoph Dorner and Lukas Daniel Klausner examined BattlEye, Easy Anti-Cheat, FACEIT Anti-Cheat, and Vanguard. The authors classified two of those four systems—FACEIT Anti-Cheat and Vanguard—as showing “rootkit-like” behaviour under their criteria. The result describes that paper’s sample and classification; it is not a population-wide estimate and does not mean the named products are malware or establish a privacy violation.

Public, comparable independent audit reports for each product are not established by the available cited material. A vendor’s statement that its software is reviewed, internally or externally, is not equivalent to a published report that explains the audit’s scope, date, and findings.

What controls and requirements should players check?

Check whether the game requires the product

If a game requires its anti-cheat, stopping or uninstalling that software means losing access to that protected game until the software is available again. Riot and EA describe removal options, but those options do not preserve play in games that depend on the removed product.

Check startup behavior and available choices

Look up the current support information for the exact anti-cheat and Windows version you use. In particular, distinguish a driver that loads at system startup from one the vendor says runs only with a protected game. For Vanguard, check whether your system is eligible for Pre-Check rather than assuming the option is available to everyone.

Check security requirements on your existing PC

Riot lists TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, Memory Integrity (HVCI/VBS), and IOMMU among features it may require depending on the PC configuration. Requirements can depend on the system, so check Riot’s current official guidance and your machine’s existing settings before considering hardware changes.

Read the relevant privacy notice

Kernel privilege does not tell you what information a product collects. Read the vendor’s current privacy explanation for the product and distinguish claims about the driver from claims about the game or broader service. A vendor’s description is useful, but it is not an independent verification.

How to make a decision without treating every driver alike

  • Is the anti-cheat required for a game you actually want to play?
  • Does its driver start with Windows or, according to the vendor, only with a protected game?
  • Can you stop or uninstall it, and what game access would that remove?
  • What does the current privacy notice say about collection and inspection?
  • Which Windows security settings apply to your particular PC?
  • Are independent audit reports public, and do they state their scope, date, and findings?

Those answers support a more useful judgment than the label “kernel-level” alone. The tradeoff is real: studios say elevated access helps them contend with cheats at elevated privilege, while players have good reason to scrutinize software that can operate at that level and to expect understandable controls and evidence.
