Kerala’s IT department is being reported under a new name: the Department of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Future Technologies. But the department’s official website consulted still lists it as the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, and the formal order and effective date for a change have not been established.
What is Kerala’s IT department’s reported new name?
A report published October 3, 2026, gives the name as the Department of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Future Technologies. The report presents the change as a way to signal greater attention to AI and other emerging technologies. The Balanced News report attributes its coverage to News18 and The Hindu; the underlying government order was not located in the sources consulted.

Has the new name formally taken effect?
That is not established by the available official material. The official department website still identifies the agency as the Department of Electronics and Information Technology. No formal renaming order or effective date was available to confirm that the reported name has taken effect in law or administration.

What does the department do, and what might the new title signal?
Official department materials describe work that already extends beyond a narrow IT remit. The department site lists government e-services, digital service delivery, and technology infrastructure. Its organizational profile includes technology parks and emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, blockchain and fintech, the Internet of Things, and e-mobility.
Kerala’s IT Policy 2026 offers wider context: it sets out an ambition to build a knowledge economy and innovation hub, with high-speed connectivity, high-tech sectors, and startup development. That policy context is consistent with a broader technology emphasis, but it does not independently verify the department rename or prove its specific rationale.
Available official material does not show that the reported name change alters the department’s responsibilities, structure, staffing, budget, or programs. A new title alone is not evidence that any of those have changed.

No. The department-name report and the state-name process are separate matters. On February 24, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to alter the state’s name from “Kerala” to “Keralam.” The Press Information Bureau announcement described further legislative steps as still to follow; it did not say the process was complete.

A Directorate of Technical Education circular index later listed instructions concerning updates to government websites, portals, applications, and other digital systems in response to the state-name alteration. The entry for IT-C2/415/2026-ITD is dated September 5, 2026, and was uploaded September 8, 2026. The circular index concerns digital-system updates for the state-name process, not confirmation of the IT department’s reported renaming.
