Xbox does not document Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Mythic as four rungs of one official achievement-rarity ladder. Microsoft’s GDK enum lists only Unset, Rare, and Common; Mythic is a separate award for completing a game’s original achievements. The reviewed official definitions do not establish Epic or Legendary as Xbox achievement-rarity categories.
What does Rare mean on Xbox achievements?
In Microsoft’s GDK documentation, rarity describes how prevalent an achievement unlock is among players of a title. The XblAchievementRarityCategory enum, shown in the GDK 2510 view and last updated November 6, 2025, defines three values:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| GDK value | Documented meaning |
|---|---|
Unset |
No rarity category is set. |
Rare |
The enum page gives an unlock-rate band of 0–10.9%. |
Common |
The enum page gives an unlock-rate band of 11.0–100.0%. |
Microsoft’s related XblAchievementUnlockEvent documentation, also last updated November 6, 2025, describes the rarity percentage as the number of users who unlocked an achievement divided by the number of unique users of that title. That page says Rare applies at 9% or less and Common otherwise. It is a different threshold from the enum page’s 0–10.9% Rare and 11.0–100.0% Common bands; Microsoft’s two pages do not reconcile the discrepancy. Treat the exact cutoff cautiously rather than assuming one universal published threshold.
Are Epic and Legendary official Xbox rarity tiers?
Epic and Legendary are not values in the reviewed Microsoft GDK rarity enum. That establishes what the documented enum contains; it does not prove those words never appear in an individual game, another Xbox interface, or a third-party service. In this documented system, the rarity labels are Rare and Common, with Unset as the additional enum value.

What is a Mythic achievement?
Mythic is not another unlock-prevalence band. In an Xbox Wire announcement dated September 29, 2026, Xbox described Mythic as a game-completion award: completing all of a game’s original achievements earns Mythic status. Achievements introduced later through DLC or updates are not required, and earned status remains yours. The announcement says the feature was beginning to roll out to Xbox Insiders; it does not establish general public availability.
The same announcement says eligible games completed previously—including Xbox 360 titles—had already received Mythic status. This is a separate measure from whether any individual achievement is rare: Mythic recognizes completion of the original achievement set, not a low unlock percentage. How Xbox rarity differs from TrueAchievements scoring
TrueAchievements’ TA Ratio and score are a third-party rarity-adjusted scoring system, not Microsoft’s official Rare/Common category. Xbox Wire’s 2014 interview with TrueAchievements CEO Rich Stone describes the service’s ratios as rarity-adjusted scores and discusses its achievement statistics, guides, and gaming sessions. A TA score and an Xbox rarity label therefore answer different questions: the former is a community service’s scoring measure, while the latter is an official documented category based on unlock prevalence. Xbox Wire also covered Xbox rarity integration in a 2016 article, providing historical context rather than a current definition of the GDK enum.

How to interpret an achievement’s rarity
- Look at the achievement’s displayed unlock percentage when the platform or game provides one; it indicates prevalence, not how difficult the achievement is by itself.
- Check who supplies any label or score. Microsoft’s documented categories are Rare and Common; a TA Ratio or TA score belongs to TrueAchievements.
- For Mythic, check whether you completed the game’s original achievement list. Later DLC or update achievements do not count toward the requirement described by Xbox.
